Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

I feel like I should have known this one a long time ago, but I guess better late than never.

I took a guitar chord sample and experimented with the params window [shift+program -> Drum -> Guitar sample -> Params]. I set the Freq level at about 5-10 and set the Reson value at about 11-15. As a result, I got some crazy sub bass.

I think as a rule of thumb, the lower the Freq level, the higher the Reson value could be and vice versa. Experiment with this and I promise you'll get some crazy sounds.

I also suggest you layer some sounds this way. Take a kick and copy it to another pad. Then change the parameters of the copied kick to read a lower Frequency level with a higher Reson level from the original. After that, trigger the original kick with the copied kick [shift+program -> Drum -> Original Kick -> Mode:Simult -> put copied kick]. At this point, go back to the Params window of the copied kick and tweak the Freq, Reson, Attack, Decay, and the Tuning (-3/-2 or +3/+2) values until you get a dope sound.

This might take a little while when you layer high frequency sounds, cause you'll get more phase cancellation.

The Reson is a function right underneath Freq, in the Params window. If you decide to throw on a low pass filter on a sample you copied, raise the Reson to get a dope effect, and trigger it with the original. Let me know if this still doesn't make any sense.

The layering aspect of it is mad basic, I agree. I just never really messed with the Reson function in the filter section of the MPC2000xl. I never knew how to use it correctly, and how essential it could be in my productions. I'm sure I'm not the only one to overlook this Reson function. I bet if you take any sample and throw on a low pass filter of about 5-10 and put on a Reson value of 15 you'll be surprised.
Make sure you have some good headphones, or a sub bass speaker. So you can hear what I'm really talking about.

True, that's why I considered it a little trick not some sort of breakthrough. I figured I wouldn't be the only one to overlook the Reson function. Just to emphasize a little, for those who get confused (not most of you), I'm not talking about the EQ you find through the EB16 attachment. You can easily find this in the filter section of your MPC2000xl.

In case anyone isn't clear what resonance does... it adds an eq boost around the frequency that the low-pass filter is set to filter at.

And I agree the resonance in MPC's sounds NUTS at low frequencies. It usually has this big and round sound, and can get some surprising sub-basses defintely.

Basic, this trick isn't a trick, its the basics. Low End theory Ring a bell??

Anyway if you assign those same parameters to the NV Slider and overdub the slider movements to a sample you can get some pretty sweet change ups.

Okay I'll be sure to say basics next time... whatever works. But more importantly, good looks on the NV slider thing. I'll be sure to try that out.
