sampling from youtube

I sample from youtube alot since my belt snapped from my turntable( 30 euro piece of sh*t). I had problems with static also, but when u remove the powercord from my laptop the static dis apears.

you can remove that by connecting the laptop to a conditioner or using an adaptor to eliminate the ground plug (not really recommended but will work)

I sample from you tube all the time. Just put it into high quality (add "&fmt=18"). Boom

hiphop started with people that didnt have a lot, so they just made the most of what they had i.e. vinyls. youtube digging is no different. not everyone has the time to go digging, or the money to go digging or even the knowledge to go digging, so using youtube is just their and sometimes my way of making the most of what we got. me personally i use youtube more for research so ill find something on the tube and then ill search high and low for a hard copy and/or a digitial copy....only after ive exhausted all my resources will i sample from youtube.
not to sound cliche but if it sounds good who cares where the sample came from and we only hurt ourselves when we sample from youtube so y complain?

For starters...poor quality. No matter what you do you are not going to get the same audio quality from youtube as you would from vinyl, CD or gear. The general rule applies, garbage in/garbage out. No amount of mixing will bring back whats lost when files are compressed and transformed to MP3's

Next..its the lazy mans way out. I mean think about it, sampling makes it easy enough, now cats dont want to dig and find gems? You get what you put into this, those that arent willing to put up a few dollars here and there shouldnt expect to get anything back from this.

Bottom line everyone is entitled to do them but I personally thing downloading is not digging. Its wackness..

Look up power conditioners on sites like musicians friend, guitarcenter etc

i didnt mean that disrespectfully to youtube samplers, like i sed i have sampled from there on occassion. i more meant, from what ive read most peoples problem with youtube is that the quality of audio is not great, but if we are content with the quality of audio given to us by youtube, and we still make music that sounds good then wheres the problem???? ok after reading what i just wrote i realise i phrased what i was trying to say wrong. basically as a producer, if i/we/you know the quality of the original sample is bad yet we still manage too create dopeness from it, the only person that knows about the original samples lack of quality is us(if that makes sense) kind of an "ignorance is bliss" kind of vibe u know?

Question: i sample from all types of media....film, tv, records, cd, vinyl, tape, vhs, real life, etc, basically anything i can get my hands on. but my question to you is, how is spending hours "digging" in a record shop with a portable turntable any different from spending hours at home diggin on youtube/torrent sites? (not including the fact that u gotta pay for what u find in record shops)

in my opinion , digging is digging, some shit you cant find on vinyl and some u cant find online, so just cus u find a dope sample on youtube that aint even been produced on vinyl does that mean that the song u create loses credibility?

and what if i find a sample of a quote in a movie? are u saying in order for me to not be regarded as lazy i gotta go find that that audio tape of that movie and then sample that?

You dudes are really dense. I don't really think this is the place for a complete hip hop lesson, but so many cats on this site seem to ignore the fact that the dj is what makes rap music so special. You cannot ignore paying for records. It is an investment. Spending time in a record store is an investment. Talking to clerks is an investment. Talking to dealers is an investment, roadtrips, studio time, equipment, pools, playing music in public, hand me downs... All of those things make you a better producer. Browsing youtube is completely different than browsing the bins. The knowledge gained from them is different. To be a collector or a dj you need (or maybe needed) to connect with people outside of your bedroom. This lack of knowledge of music in general is mostly what us old dudes have a problem with, not the quality of the finished product. Anyone can make a rap beat. To really understand why rap music is special takes years.

If you think you know about music, yet your only collection resides on youtube, you are a sucker. If you don't know about music you probably haven't djed, and have years to go before you should think about making rap beats.


Sample whatever you want, but don't tell me you make rap if you can't id impeach from a mile away.

ALSO, plug the laptop into a different plug from your mixer and/or power amp (or powered speakers)

(plug it into a plug from another room if possible.)
