That's not what double up a sample on an MPC's pad is doing though. This is precisely what the normalize/volume/velocity controls are for. Why use double the polyphony for your sample when there are several better alternatives?

Plus the 2500 is not sample accurate, so you're bound to get strange phasing issues.

and why would you want to play the same sound twice at a time? Even if you could do that without phaseing problems - the sound would stay the same, it would only be twice as loud. so just make it louder, layering makes only sense if you use two different sounds.

I don't find this to be true at all, i had no phasing issues in Cubase, Reason or any other software. (not even with the back in the day trackers :D)
I don't use exactly equal samples layered together though..

Yeah. That as been stated before.
The problem is that whatever you layer (equal or not) doesn't always sounds the same because of the micro delay in the layers, this in the case of equal samples causes phasing, in the case different samples cause the sound to change a bit in a few pad hits as the delay is not regular... But if you're peculiar enough about this kind of details then you should have no problem finding a workaround, its annoying nevertheless
