Hi everybody!
I would like to have some good boom bap drums(the same kind than those of Primo, Pete Rock, Da Beatminerz, Stoupe...) but don't manage to have it yet.
Here is how I proceed but I don't know if my technique is good:
I sample drums from some funk, jazz or rock records. I try tu put some EQ to have the kind of sound that I want, and then I add some compression and put it in my MPC 2000. But I don't get really good sounds. I only use free VST to do that.
Do you have some tips for me, like good VST, EQ or compressor presets or anything else that can be helpful?
Thanks!

Maybe you should compress AFTER, in your daw or something..I don't really know compression, but I wouldn't bother compressing until the song is complete, someone else here may be able to answer your question though

man.. thats a science :D
the most important thing is a good sample, a good drumbreak, with a good frequency-spectrum, cause you cant add frequencys to you sound, you can only boost or reduce frequencys.. and you need a good eq.. what i can advise are the waves bundles - very good plug ins! (especially the rbass - works great! perfect for kicks! check this: http://www.waves.com/Content.aspx?id=194)
and what i always do is - i cut the frequencys that the sounds dont need - like hihats dont need frequencys under 250mhz or something.. the best way is to try it out!
to cut frequencys is important.. the sounds harmonize better when you do that..
cause of compressing - i compress my drumsounds before i load them in my mpc to, i think its a good way to accentuate attack and something.. but i compress them later again to (the whole drumgroup) and later the whole mixdown hehe
hmm i hope i could help you a little bit.. if i remind some other things i´ll post it!
again sorry for my english im from vienna :)

peace

Thanks a lot fredlib, I will check those plug ins :)
Also, do you know what are the frequencies that are not necessary for kicks and snares?

aahh necessary was the word i didnt find hehe thank you! :D
the best thing you can do is to take a paragrafic or a parametric eq, make a small envelope, gain -25db or something, go through the frequency-spectrum and listen whats happening.. so you find out which frequencys are important and which not..
hope i wrote this halfway understandable :)

and what you also can do is laying sounds upon the other (like a subbass under a kick or something, the options are endless!)

layering.. (tempted to eye roll, but it seems so rude)

just beat me to it, lol.

hehe yeah right! its a option..
but my opinion is: better 1 fat drumkit as many layered sounds 8)

boom bap eh?

snares on 2 and 4
hats pretty much 1/8 notes all the way through
kick on the 1 and where ever else you want them. (If you quantize, i recommend 16(3) or 32(3). )

layer drum breaks and other one shots. Basic boom bap can be pretty boring to be honest. (Im not one of those 32(3) hi hat dudes either.) Boom bip is where its at. lol

Sample breaks off vinyl sped up as fast as possbile (45 or 78 rpm on your tt or pitch up like 9 halfsteps or more in your DAW and sample your audio outs). Pitch down in the mpc. Chop the break into parts or sounds. Don't just chop individual hits get a few kick kick or snare hat or even longer chops. These two hit chops can be pitched a bit lower or higher than the rest of your samples until the swing feels right. Layering is a good idea, definitely have a low passed kick and try hitting more than one snare at a time with the quantize off. Shuffle the hi hats again with no quantize. To me boom bap is mostly the compressed sped up vinyl to hardware sampler sound and the swing that's it. Adding any compression in post (casette, avalon whatever) makes it all the more sweeter too.

easy way ( non mpc)

go download the 30 day free ableton live 8 trial

load your desired drum samples in a drum rack and sequence out a 4 to 8 bar pattern

apply the "redux" effect to 12 bit

go into the ableton groove pool and a 58% to 70 % sp 1200 or mpc 1/8 or 1/16 groove/quantize/swing on the WHOLE pattern

boom to the bap you have different. there is a particular groove in there that should have been named "pete rock" il'l let you find that one

or do the same on your mpc using the swing setting 58% & above

youl'l be at 16 bit most mpc's.... then you can downgrade to 12 bit if wanted after going to daw

For real, just go to your PROGRAM screen, got to ASSIGN, choose SIMULT and start combining different kicks and snares. At some point eventually, you will start getting the sound you look after.
