Are you kidding? I'm not a die hard fan of Dre, but even his R&B tracks have that thump in his kicks, and the crispness in his snares. Even some of the songs that I didn't like where he produced it, I couldn't deny his ability to mix his shit.. Songs like Family Affair: MaryJ, Fast Lane: Bilal, I wasnt really feeling to tough, but those drums are crazy. Even, Still Dre, I didnt really like the first time I heard it. But those drums, when they hit its like "hell yeah." (Listen to these songs in your headphones and you'll see what I'm talking about.)

For all the DJ's, you ever been cueing up the next record and you notice the difference in quality of the mix from one song to another and you gotta adjust the level? Whenever you cue a dre track, its like its in a league of its own when you hear how well it was mixed. He uses the right compression with just the right amout of fx where it doesn't dampen the punch of his drums and it sounds amazing. Listen to "Lay Low" which is another song I didn't like too much, but damn it sounds good.

He may not play all of the instruments when he produces, but he damn sure knows how to make the instruments sound their best. I think that makes him one of the nicest!!

OK, but the final sound of the track, the compression et al. is the mastering of the track, which can occur at mixdown, but I still doubt dre is responsible for even that.

Maybe you're right. But album after album, from Death Row to Aftermath(I'm purposely excluding his previous work), the mixdown of his tracks are tight. Now I know he's not using the same engineers to do the same work, or the same musicians, on all of these projects... And all engineers dont all sound the same, but Dre's tracks still have that recognizable exceptional warm clarity that you dont find in a lot hiphop tracks. The common denominator here is Dre. It all starts from the initial kicks and snares he uses. If these aren't properly tweaked and recorded initially, mastering a single track will not improve the sound of your drums or track very much, even after the best mixdown.. And I doubt mastering is done at the same time the mixdown occurs. Even if you do put an overall compression on the entire song, it is still apart of the mixdown until its sent to another studio for mastering by another engineer.

YEah, his tracks from that era are nice and sparse. He could have used the same mastering house on have the same in house engineer, but I'm sure he knows how to EQ and stuff, and I've heard that he is present at every mixdown, so perhaps you're right.

As far as what comes to mind immediatley, I like the way the break sounds on shadow's "six days", I also like a few joints I've heard from Dan the Automator. Primo, of course. Also, peep "Delorean" by El-P. Just my pO.
