Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

I have both of these problems too. My paste defaults to replace also. I have to set it to merge manually. I also find my HD blank from time to time in the middle of sessions. I just hit main screen and then load again, it's always cleared the fault.

hi sean - welcome to mpc-tutor - very nice to see you here around ...

i noticed the blank hd too - very often actually - mostly if not always it happens when i load up things placed in different folders (subfolders):

ie if i load somethin from a subfolder, then wanna load somethin from another subfolder which isn't in the same routefolder. in order to do so one has to step back from the first subfolder using the jog wheels < and go back towards the mainfolder. when reaching the mainfolder - the one where everythin is placed into - there is only this mainfolder with nothin else into it (right side of screen is blank)

first time it happend i thought my hd is now definately gone - meanwhile i am used to it coz it happens really often - i leave load mode, jump into main mode (or another one) and then go back into load mode and the hd is there again ...

so not really a big problem - but still would be nice if it wouldn't happen ...

nice to see Sean around this parts

Hopefully they get some ideas off this site :)

We have plenty of them

btw: blank harddisc.

i just messed a bit in that load page. it seems that i get that blank screen only when i use the jogs < very fast like goin back 2-3 folders quickly and than its always blank. if i go slowly backwards from the subfolder to the mainfolder the screen never turns blank, ... but its hard to operate it slowly ... that load window ain't that exciting

OK here's one that just went to number one on my priority list

***q link setting per pad***

I just realized (I know I'm late on this one and please correct me if I'm wrong) that we only have 6 q link avalable at a time (the mpc does not record the cc data it records q link value 1,2,3..6 and in order to free up q link you have to resample your stuff assign&set it in program and do seq edits to get it in the seq again.. thats a hell of a workaround for something that should be done via touching a pad and twisting a knob... this is also vital to the mpc consept,.. next to the pads its the other way to express yourself

OK and here's a very little thing to add/adjust but very significant to the UI

*Inteligent cursor*

let the 4k be more inteligent when moving the cursor .. I mean it should be able to jump to the most used functions on screen rather than haveing to cruse your way through all the other values.. say like if I want to go into loop/bar window on the main screen, I have to press the cursor quite a few times to get there.. I'll have to press up a few times, sure not a problem but what really bugs me is that we use loop & bar betty much 99% more that we use tempo in a session but yet we still have to cursor scroll though tempo every time we have to go to bar/loop . we can do better than that akai, (shfit + cursor or cursor block) the same would go for other windows akai you figure it out you sorta got it right in zone window wereas the cursor will jump to the last currently selected value via cursor block comands .. but yeah a litlle thing that can make all the differance

and how about that copy window.. that needs work

when selecting a another seq in "copy to" the bars should automatikly adjust themself to that pattern .. cos its comon sence .. why would I want to copy something from 3.456-5.345 in another pattern .. the odds are I'll be copying whole bars 1.00-5.00 .. so get on this

I consider these fixes not features! something that should have been there right from the start..

and here's one wich falls into the features

*mute memory* alaow the mpc to reconize and store mute window settings on the numberic buttons, and the ablility to recallable thouse sesttinmg up anytime via shift plus the numberic buttons..

& Hats off to Sean, nice to see you here mate..

Ahhh.. PASTE!
Yes, PASTE still defaults to REPLACE, as this is the most common application.
The change in V1.60 was clearly stating that it was only for the MOVE function:
"* In SEQ EDIT, MOVE mode defaults to MERGE instead of REPLACE"

Thanks Alto, we can repeat this now. We'll correct this in the next update.
(too bad nobody reported this during the Public Beta stage)
the mpc does not record the cc data it records q link value 1,2,3..6
It depends how you setup the Qlink Transmit parameter in the SEND sub-page:
* Q EVENT: sends/records Q-LINK 1-6 events, function as defined in Qlink Receive.
This allows to control entire Parts or FX parameters, regardless of the Out setting of the current active track.
There are indeed only 6 Q-LINK EVENTs per MULTI.

* CONTROL CHANGE: sends/records the selected MIDI CC data.
The CC data is sent according to the Out setting of the current active Track.
- If the Track Out is set to Part, the CC is sent to that Part. Using the Modulation Matrix in the PROGRAM assigned to that Part allows to define the action of the CC data on that Program.
- If the Track Out is set to a MIDI Port and a MIDI Channel, the CC is sent to that MIDI Channel on the selected MIDI Port (INT-A/B or OUT-A/D)
- If the Track Out is set to a MIDI Port and ANY channel, the CC is sent to that selected MIDI Port, on the MIDI Channel specified in QLINK RECEIVE.
In any case, the recorded data is MIDI CC, and is not affected even is the Q-LINK setup is changed.

* PAD CONTROL: sends/records the assigned PAD CONTROL parameter (PITCH, DECAY, CUTOFF, ...) on the selected Pad.
The recorded data is the selected parameter for the selected pad, and is not affected even is the Q-LINK setup is changed.
Of course, this only works in the MPC4000 if the Out of the current active track is routed to a Part containing a DRUM Program.
However, the MIDI messages sent by PAD CONTROL are "MIDI Key-based Controllers Message" and some external sound modules might be able to respond to some of those (for instance, some drum sound module respond to the VOLUME and PAN Pad controls on individual durms sounds).
I mean it should be able to jump to the most used functions on screen rather than haveing to cruse your way through all the other values.
That's what the BLOCK CURSOR keys are there for: jump to the closest block and cursor to the function. This allows to get to almost any parameter in 4 presses or less.
In V1.60, we also added shortcut access to common windows from the MISC mode (SYNC, Metronome, Auto-Punch, Tempo Map and Sequence Transpose), as well as a direct access to the TIMING CORRECT window by holding down the TIMING CORRECT key.
when selecting a another seq in "copy to" the bars should automatikly adjust themself to that pattern .. cos its comon sence .. why would I want to copy something from 3.456-5.345 in another pattern .. the odds are I'll be copying whole bars 1.00-5.00
Errrr... it already does that! The default destination in COPY TO is always 001.01.000.
Of course, the source copy range defaults to the selection that you just made. If you want to copy whole bars, simply select whole bars (using SHIFT + << BAR >> keys in SEQ EDIT) before opening the COPY window.

Thanks for clearing the qlink issue up Sean, I knew it couldn’t be like that, duno it was a frustrating day.. also thanks for the shift + bar command tip, I did't know we could select entire bars like that!! It really helps.. Makes sense why akai upgraded the copy command to adjust itself to locator timing then doesn’t it,

Now I know what the block cursors are for and I still think they can be improved, for instant the an "intelligent cursor" would allow you to use the block cursor keys in windows like "copy command" so pressing cursor block would jump from selected track to "destination track" press it down again and it jumps to "number of repeats" as these are the most used commands in that window

And then there’s the “all note” button (imo I think "all note" should be user selectable, I’d like it to be default “all notes” personally, (isn’t that what we are coping 90% of the time anyway?, what’s the logic behind the way it is now Sean, the last note pressed/played?

I’d really like the block cursors to be more active in other windows aswell: say q-link for example so instead of jumping between multi and last selected q link it would jump between qlinks, how many times to we need fast access to multi in the q-link window?

also it would be intelligent and user friendly if the block cursor on KGmix page which always jumps to program when pressed up, whould instead jump to of last selected parameter (so if your messing with global tuning for that program in kGmix you always have to scroll to tuning from program field after you’ve pressed a pad and block cursor, dunno how easy or if akai approves of this, but it would be a dream if the cursor route/block keys could be user definable so everyone could work within their own format..

but in all honesty I do think the 4k UI would greatly improve if: on the "main page" we wouldn’t have to scroll though all the features that we don't use to get to the ones we use all the time (loop/bar/program number) imo the default should be bars when moving to the middle window in main, instead of for an example going though tempo or instrument type (if you want instrument press left, if you press up your at bars) when pressing down it should go bypass instruments and jump to velocity and skip note duration if you want note duration just press up press up twice your at bar, press down your at velocity again, press down from velocity your at part (bypassing program, if you want program just press right but it should first go on part cos why would I want to jump to the program for that part? I'll in most likely be selecting another part rather than changing a program on a part so I'm sure we can route the cursor in a more userfriendly way and make the block cursor keys more active too, honestly this little os upgrade would give the UI an extra gear for speed..

alaow me to be anal: extra 3pushes x say 50 an hour in an 8 hour session = 1200 extra pushes every session, lets say 5times a week that's 7500 extra pushes, a month just under 30.000 extra pushes now a year .. okok I'll stop now but you se where I'm going here buddy .. workflow !!!

sorry for the rant, but I actually feel strongly about this, I know I need to get out more

& btw
*A feature to be added to the wish list:
A command that would align all pattern tracks, so one can without much problems convert to liner sequencing
