I honestly wouldn't mind seeing an MPC-killer in the form of something that intergrates with software. As I stated earlier, NI beat Akai to the punch. But since Akai has already jumped into the controller market, they should do a controller based off of a real MPC (unlike the MPD). Whether they translate the MPC OS into a Windows/Mac platform or creating a controller for NI's Maschine...I think they will have a winner. But the OS must match or exceed an MPC which isn't the case. But there are people around the forums that claim it is. While you said it is no MPC-killer...you are being too nice to NI. This is unlike you based upon your previous evaluations of the latest Akai MPCs. What is up with that? I think we need a real comparison chart for the Maschine vs MPC.

Honest, constructive feedback is one of my reasons for buying Maschine. And once I get it, I will be all over the NI site doing just that....that is what I do. :P

Maschine is nice so I`m not missing alot of 4k features when it comes to sample based beats. As to sound designing, program matrix and a full on sampler 4k is up there. But like you I`m integrating most of my setup into virtual instruments from Kontakt, ES24, and so on. It is akin to my ESX Korg just fun without all the technical aspects and having to engineer alot of things like before. If I was still mainly hardware and sound modules 4k or 5K for that would be the way to go for me. But virtual plugins is the future and it is fast no shit fast. Just I had to warp my head around it and like you said at first I wasn`t impress with the sequencing of alot of software DAWs sequencers or Abletons sequencer for that matter using a MPD24, keyboard so I was playing and sequencing my soft instruments with my 4k. But my maschine does that too and now I can drag my midi sequences aka patterns into the DAW nice. It is nice and can only get better with 1.5 and I like that I can bring in my MPC programs without the conversions like I had to do with Battery and ESX24.

When you get your give it a chance and enjoy it it is a cool program and hit the NI board with your request seems like they listen.

I agree AKAI should have done this along time ago back in 2002 and 2003 with the virtual Z8 they canned. But they seems to only be a hardware manufacture without a great software designing team to impediment this part. Alot of there development seems to be third party contractors integrating small improvements to MPCs OS. But if they had gone ahead (secret at the time in 2006) developed a software/hardware hybrid with Ableton with a MPC OS it would have beat Maschine to the punch. But instead Akai went with the 2500 and Ableton introduced midi sequencing and drum racks in 2007 I think.

Needlz using 4k and soft synth setup I`m based away the same keyboard controller, 4k, and sound module with everything else in Logic Studio great sounds and virtual board. Like him I sequence on the 4k. And I was a hardware nut too.

Knocksquared this cat`s video workflow helped me to decided to give maschine a chance by trading in my mpd24 for a discount on top of the discount that Rock On was offering before the 1.5 release. Unlike other plugins I can use maschine in standalone mode without even opening my DAW just on the hardware like Knocks doing here. Once the beat is finished I just save the project and move on. When I`m ready to add other instruments I open the plugin in Logic and load the project and go from there until final bounce in logic. Plus I can do it live also.

Yes we could do the same with a 4k with a bit more preparation, library and external effects processors.

Ok. You are still being way...way too nice. Are you going to leave it to me to get down and dirty? These videos show exactly what can be done with any MPC especially the latest models. Drag and drop MIDI files from the MPCs hard drive to a DAW is a very simple process.

Jah you are right drag and drop can be done pretty much with any hardware sequencer. I have to save it as Midi 0 or 1 I forget but you know what I`m talking about, transfer it to my desktop, (I prefer to record it into my daw track by track before,) and drag it into my DAW and assign it to an soft instrument or external track going back out to a sound module. All which by the way could take some time and minutes. Hey I even download midi files off the internet to use inside the DAW classicial piano performance simple like samples. But that isn`t the point is it?

I can do drag or not drag midi inside the box without all the steps or simply bounce to audio just drag directly off the plugin itself. Simple and fast. Aksys or Mounted Disk for mpc ain`t got nuttin on Maschine in this area. This is virtual studio workflow. Anyway you got that STAR TREK setup with all of those Rolands, Yamahas, and Korgs along with the OX1 Hard disk recorders maschine would be the WRONG choice for You. For Hardware all MPCs all the way. Software studio Maschine is the shit. That is my two cents.

This is one of the smoke and mirror features they keep talking about at NI site and ol boy in the other threads. NI hypes non-routine tasks such as this. I am more interested in the routine tasks.

I am more than happy to play devils advocate. I have written an entire novel just by reading the manual about what Maschine lacks when compared to an MPC even within a software environment. However, I will save it for my review...coming soon.

Each update has a new manual it seems you are still on 1.0 when everyone else is on 1.5. You can watch a video or read, video shows which is why I post both a maschine and 4k workflow. But the truth is when it`s in your actual hands. So you are just blowing smoke if you are going to base everything from an out of date manual. Plus the unofficial manual lists even more features. But you are you so nothing anyone can say will change you Jah. Just do you. I like it cuz I`m using it now. It is cool.

Nope. I am a registered member of Native Instruments because I owned/own several of their products. I downloaded the manual for 1.5 as soon as it was released. Nothing in the manual has impressed me coming from an MPC background. I am not blowing smoke by the way...American Musical called me minutes ago to confirm that my order has already shipped. I am intelligent enough to read a manual and let you know what a product lacks.

I have seen nearly every NI video on You Tube. I know you like it because you are using it now...which was sort of my point. The forum is filled with too many fan boys that won't come clean. I am not saying you are in the same boat...but then again I am. I am not trying to cause beef. Just to give people good information about the pros and cons of music production gear...like I always have.

MPC 4000 has 64 voices....Maschine has 32.
MPC 4000 can import Akai, Roland, and Emu formats. Maschine?
An MPC...you just sample and assign later. Maschine has you picking a sound slot before you sample. Its nearly impossible to run out of sound slots on an MPC but not the case with Maschine. No?

Maschine still has no timestretching and pitchshifting like any sampler (including an MPC). No?

Honestly who cares you seen the videos and like you said MPC is better what more is there!! Specs mean nothing it is the music workflow. Hell you have already ordered maschine it is a given.

I sample a record duplicate is fast by assigning it to different pads or with the new OS go to split and make the regions I want by set amounts. By using the knobs I can adjust the start and ends easy and fast. Much faster than a mpc. Typically I don`t need to use more than 16 pads for sample based beats as I like to chop manual which I search for the parts I want and copy and adjust. Again much faster workflow than an mpc.

I don`t timestretch ever I hate the side effects unless I`m in Ableton live which is really, really good. MPCs were not really good for this unless by minute amounts under 5 to 10 bpms. Pitchshifting don`t use it just the old school way of fitting the sample by sequencing.

What I do use is timeslicing the samples I always have. Just like Pete Rock and a zillions others did it by hand and it is the method most users use and how the chop shop on ya mpcs still work whether most know it or not just automated. No biggie set the chop points and slice, sequence on beat and most of the loops can be in sync. Easy same as I did on my 4k just Maschine chopping is easier along with the zoom.

Timeslice the old school way by Pete Rock
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z73CcodfT_w

I don`t have Emu kits, Roland kits, or hardware kits as I don`t use those hardwares. But I do have alot of those sample kits, stabs, and you name it from the units. It is easy to build your own kits on Maschine everything is laid out in one page on the computer. And a plus I can preview a sample to add to the kit as the sequence it running to add to the pad quick and easy. Just faster and I like the library too.

Anyway it sounds like you made up your mind Jah and it may be better to cancel your order and save your money. What would a star trek bridge having studio jack like you want an maschine anyways. I mean you don`t intend to run all your hardware from it, do You? That would be an big mistake on your part? You should just download the demo and answer all the doubts you have from that.

If I were you I would do that, it is your credit card and you are intelligent enough to know specs is just specs and your workflow and your ease of use is what counts. No manual can explain or show how well it fits you the user.

I study others, peep it out, and try for myself. Simple.

I would say MPC still is king and it reigns for hardware control. Simple especially for a hardware studio.

You told me to check out the videos..and I did just that. I didn't say the MPC is way better. I just gave specifics where the MPC is superior since you wouldn't. (I thought this was MPC versus Maschine thread?).

Before Maschine was released, I wrote a thread on what I felt a product of that type should have (MPC 5000 unplugged). I ordered Maschine (shipping confirmed  ) to explore what it has to offer and write a review on it from an MPC-user perspective. This has yet to be done in the forum. I was hoping you would do it. This is just a review/debate and mos def not about saving money.

You said that chopping on Maschine is faster than an MPC 4000. I can see that. But my review will concentrate on the newer MPC using the JJ OS which is much faster and more flexible than Maschine. You may not see this, but I will give specifics at a later date. This info is in numerous JJ OS MPC 1000/2500 threads.

Pitchshifting/time stretching. Whether someone uses this or not, it is still not available on Maschine although every modern software or hardware sampler has this function.

Sample formats. Whether someone needs the different sample formats is not the question. I just listed what Maschine doesn't have and what the MPC 4000 does have (remember....MPC 4000 versus Maschine).

All good and well but for three weeks all you have repeated was specs, specs, specs and more specs from a manual. Why don't you download the demo for FREE. Work with it for a week and give your inputs then.

Go ahead download 1.5 and fine for yourself. Like I said before that you keep ducking around why would a hardware owner like you want a maschine aka software instrument running a hardware studio. It's backwards thinking. For the longest I been running a software studio with hardware which means I do all the processing things you ask in the box. Maschine works well in the box sorry Jah you are still with the hardware studio mindset. To each his own.

Umm...I thought this was about Maschine versus an MPC? And not about why I would purchase Maschine. I can't recall every saying a pro-hardware or pro-software. I do recall saying that I use an MPC with software instruments (Reason, Battery, Kontakt, Giga Studio, Mach Five, Nuendo, Logic, etc. etc) the same was numerous producers do...which is the reason why I never use an MPC for multisampled instrument patches. Nearly all my audio is mostly in the box with the MPC as the sequencer. But I do use the MPC to chop samples to later import or record them into a DAW.

While you may disagree..specs is and will always be important. You do recall the numerous threads where people are upset that the latest MPCs didn't have 24 bit sampling (specs) and didn't have 512 MB to 1 GB of memory (specs). I intend to post an MPC versus Maschine thread where terminology and specs are compared backed up with how they perform in various situations.

No need to download a demo which would be counterproductive without the hardware. The software alone isn't impressive. The combination of the hardware and software is where its potential lies.

From all the threads and feedback around here...forum members what to know the skinny on Maschine and how it performs compared to an MPC. Since nobody is trying to do this, I have stepped up..spent $600 and will do it for the community. People want to know the truth and not a sales pitch. If NI is going to support this product in the future, now is the chance for MPC users to make their desires known in order to have a better product. I will address this as well.

People can see from many productive threads till you step in with classic Jah misinformation. You spent 600 cuz you didn`t check around not for any community and that would be silly anyway. Now you are accusing whoever buys Maschine or uses it as a sales pitch and you yourself bought one, Hello!! Anyone can make own their desires known at Native Instruments Forum were it is made. Classic Jah will more shenagains and I haven`t seen you at Maschine forums once.

It is still backward in my opinion for a star trek hardware studio like you buying a one midi out controller to be a MPC-Killer you claim for when you entered the thread. It is not a mpc killer get that out of your system period in the hardware sense.

But in a virtual studio it is priceless and goes beyond a regular mpc any in my opinion for working with software. You claim to have Kontakt, Battery, and other software among with the Fantoms and Korgs sequencing with your 5k.

This is simple for a so called MPC expert yeah I see you BSing in the 1.5 thread just I don`t want to get involve with your shenagins and I don`t really want to indulge you here.

But check it your words, "I can't recall every saying a pro-hardware or pro-software. But I do use the MPC to chop samples to later import or record them into a DAW. quote Aksia" ........Hmmn first all audio in the sequencer the fathom too wow!!! Then you chop all samples in the mpc to import or record into a DAW. Well good for you which is exactly what I said I wanted to get away from and with maschine I don`t have to do. By the way how to you control Reason and Battery as the 5k doesn`t send midi out by qlinks hmmn?

So I repeat what I already post before

To me tracking means preamplifiers especially to get the best levels and high quality recordings. I use a Digidesign 002 rack which gives me 4 preamps to work with along with the other 4 analog inputs, sdip and RCA inputs. I record through 1-4 digi002 preamps track by track to print the best signal as I don't have a digital outs install which would be another 300 to 500 bucks option. I don't think 1k has a digital outs option. Anyways quality preamps give you the best recordings I wanted and planned to get an ensemble by Appogee as all 8 inputs have a preamp and the core audio driver is more stable than Pro tools at a cost of a thousand bucks and more.

My point is by going virtual all of your recording and tracking is inside the box, no need for hifi preamps, track all sounds at once, and no degradion of sound. This is from a modest home studio hardware point of view. Of course to my eyes and ears if I tracked in pro studio I would have no worries with premium preamps, boards, cables and a hellva recording engineer to do it right. Or if I had the budget I buy the extra preamps along with the effects gears to get great recordings too.

But virtual instruments save money, sound and time for my home setup and like I said before of gathering sounds, importing them, and making kits on the mpc. It is easier and faster.

Sorry for the long post just clear the air as why I want to track inside the computer. If in way recording at Sony Studio no problem with an MPC I carry the thing were engineer hooks all the outs to a SSl or Neve board and start leveling and tracking. Maschine I would need to bring a laptop and soundcard and run it.

On the other hand in a home studio, I can try to get the best sound I can with a good DAW of choice mine happen to be Logic Studio and virtual instruments.

It's up to the individual wearing many hats composer, recorder, arranger, mixer abd mastering engineer how they wish to do each step of the process. Any mpc 60 - 5k can do it but how you record is up to you. I think virtual in my home studio is good.

Maschine operates as a virtual sampling drum sequencer. Up til now the market just been about software samplers operating within DAW sequencer which some it great and some takes some getting use too. I always prefer mpc hardware sequncers as the layout, feel, and the workflow was easier and user friendlly than say Logic or Ableton with a pad controller. Maschine has a hardware sequencer workflow, feel and layout just like a hardware sequencer. But the ease, space and sounds of a software sampler. It sounds good, feels good, and flows well unlike any other computer based program I used before and it is familiar like a mpc to boot.

After all this time, we can't have a civil conversation about some toys

The last time I checked, this was a Maschine versus MPC 4000 thread. Yet, I am still looking for the "versus" aspect with specifics. I did just that. No misinformation.

The NI videos on You Tube are nothing more than advertisements..product placement using celebs. Roland did the same using Jermaine Dupri and Just Blaze. Akai did the same with Pete Rock and the Alchemist. The Maschine users in the forums have been quoting these advertisements word for word. That is a sales pitch. And if you go back and read the threads, you will see that nearly everyone agrees that they are sales pitches. We are intelligent enough to know the difference. So when a long time MPC 4000 user and forum member creates a thread such as this, one would expect the real deal. This has yet to happen...not really.

Fact. I purchased Maschine for only one reason. That is to provide an assessment of Maschine from an MPC user perspective. This is not about being silly...not about being counter productive and backwards...and certainly not about money. For the MPC Forum community (those that are interested in Maschine) I will give my review just like I have with every product I have ever purchased.

I am not sure why you bring up Maschine's one MIDI out as a limitation in a hardware studio..if I am reading you correct. Since Maschine is primarily a USB controller for its software, audio and MIDI outs should not be an issue since it uses the resources of your computer. In other words, you can buy the best sounding audio card and MIDI interface that money can buy to bolster the power of Maschine. This can't be done on an MPC. This is important because some people don't like the AD/DA converters of the latest MPCs. Now you can own an MPC-like product with Apogee converters (as you have mentioned) A "PRO" for the use of Maschine. This is among the things I will discuss in my review. I am not shy about discussing the short comings of any product I purchase. I have always done that. Fact. I never claim to have something I don't own.

In the Maschine 1.5 thread, I am again talking about facts and my opinions of these facts. As far as Reason and Battery, I sequence them using an MPC or Logic (which I started using recently to replace Pro Tools and Nuendo). And the MPC 5000 DOES send MIDI out by Q-links as does the MPC 1000 and 2500. Saying that they don't is misinformation (I accept your apology in advance).

Can we stick to MPC versus Maschine. You should do a side-by-side comparison chart.

Went into GC today and played around on the Maschine for a little while. I didn't think I would be, but I was impressed! It was just a fast-ass workflow. In all honesty the combination of hardware/software really worked out. I decided I'm going to sell my MPC1000, and with that money be able to cop Maschine and an ASR10. I already have Ableton so if I can master all that shit I should be headed in the right direction :D
