who said it was important to take recent stuff?? Not me, and I don't recall anyone else saying that either....

then obviously you aren't making it as your own as you think

You can apply that quote to ANY sample, whether its 2 months old or 20 years old....explain to me what is the difference between a kick from a 20 year old record vs one that is 2 months old... They both get eqd, compressed, mastered, etc etc... so how is sampling one vs the other, better?? Shcit, why are we even sampling at all? It's not our original work.. so why even take credit for making the beat if your using someone else's peice???

Exactly, we sample the sounds from the past and outside of hip hop to contribute to hip hop, not take from it. You sample it because you like the sound. Sure you'll customize it, but the raw material ends up cooked fairly rare most of the time.

So how would you feel if people sampled stuff off your soundclick to then recycled it and got a higher rating than you on SC ? Not saying that it would automatically happen, but still?

Sampling's a sport man, and biting is just not good sportsmanship.

tell me, what does it matter whether the sample comes from a Hiphop record or not.... The art of sampling is how well you flip it, not where it comes from....Listen to "danger" by Blahzay Blahzay.... They use samples from WELL KNOWN Hiphop songs.......But I guess Premier was just biting right....RIIIGHHTT.....

Are you talkin about the vocals he scratches on the hook...

Man you have no concept of what the hip-hop culture is about..

I don't lose sleep over any of these producers out right now usin presets or jackin drums... Hell yeah I think it's wrong and I'ma express how I feel and how it degrades the entire culture...

Lose sleep... Nahh...

But don't get it twisted... They're not in the same class as Premo, Madlib, Diamond D, etc... Like someone else on here said... If it's about money be straight... But don't front like you're doin anything special...

It matters because Biting is incest. Narrow's the Beat pool and it is ultimately a short-cut.

There's no challenge in it at all. Ultimately lazy and a serious cop out. The whole argument that you can change the sound is pointless, You are supposed to change a sound to make it sound good, not change it so you can get away from using it. If you take a sample from a recent Hip hop record, drums, loop or one shot, it already sounds good to you, and you are most likely "flipping it" to cover up your lazyness.

Also, flipping it means different things to different people. I remember seeing a DJ at a terrible bar in NYC, he was playing really dumb stuff in a dumb order. As I was leaving, he went up to the bartender and hi fived him and said " I love Rock & Roll, the Brittney Spears version, That's what you call Digging in the crates.

I guess that means many things to many people, so it is best to steer away from those words in these discussions, because ultimatly it can mean anything. It's a wildcard, and never forget the Joker is also known as the fool.

You're right.. Flipping it means many things to people. But the kick or snare that your sampling from that rock record sounded good or good enough to were you wanted to **** with it right. Who says a drum hit had to sound like complete shit in order for you to sample it.
Some of you guys are taking this shit too damn serious. I agree that biting is wack. Biting styles or complete loops from a current producer. But it really doesnt matter where anybody samples their shit from. A lot of times cats will sample or copy a drum pattern from the latest hiphop joint and the shit still sounds wack anyway. Case in point...Tell me J-Kwon's tipsy isnt a wack rendition of clipes grinding. Then they got the nerve to use that noise that is a perfect example of what I think Elm and Matt and all these other cats are talking about. That's lazy and plain wack. That's what I dont have any respect for. But sampling a kick from a new joint doesn't make you a lazy artist. WTF, we are all SAMPLING!!!

There's some cat right now reading this whole shit, who plays drums and all his own instuments, thinking he is totally more creative than the cats who just sample. Sampling, if you really wanna be as technical as not sampling a hit from a current song, would be straight biting!! Now matter how you flip it, the sound was never yours to begin with. If it wasnt Timberland, then it was Steely Dan who put effort into making his drums sound good. But Timberland samples drums too and flips it. Who the hell is he sampling from? Do we know? Do you really care? No. The reason why you dont care is because his shit is so different. His track as a whole. Not just a drum kick or loop. If the track sounds original, and its good, what's the damn difference. IF he told you he sampled a kick from Nottz, would that make him an a$$hole or something. Of course not..

If I sample a kick from an old jazz record and someone else, some other part of the world, samples that kick, and he puts his track out before mine, am I lazy just because I have the same kick he has but he came out first?Thats ridiculous. That why cats gotta put this code of ethics thing in perspective. If cats are gonna be anal about this then, dont sample at all. Stop sampling altogether, go buy a drum set and bang your own shit out. Exclusively... Then its truly original.

In the end, unless its painfully obvious, nobody knows where anybody's getting their drums from.. unless they tell you. But YOU know where you got them from and you know you didnt bang out a drum set to attain that sound. Why not feel funny about jackin Amhad Jamal's drums after he spent years playing in small clubs, making very little money, just to have some 20 something year old cat sample and flip his drums and go platinum. Are you gonna send a portion of your royalty check to his family cause you sampled his kick? Hell no!! Its a **** drum hit.

We all wanna be different and artistic with our tracks when we choose to sample (I hope we all do), but we're still doing it with other people's music. Current or old, hiphop or rock. Thats the bottom line. Lets put this shit in perspective.

Peace

So Run DMC, Mantronix, Afrika Bam, BDP, etc, were degrading the culutre....they all used presets. Before all the golden era, hip hop purity bullsh!t when backpackers made up all these rules.

That being said its still fly to find your own drums.

Real Hip Hop culture is about a community and the poeple in it.
It's about what you can bring personally, that would be positive and uplififting for the community.

There is nothing positive to be found in abusing what is already good about the community, and by disrespectfully taking from it without any thought or input by yourself!!

If you cannot personally bring anything of your own to the community, and just survive by sucking the life from within it, then you do not deserve a place within it!

The argument that you should stop sampling to be original and equating it to sampling current hip hop to make current hip hop is bull. The difference is in what you bring to hip hop. If you are in it for a quick smash and grab admit it, then it is clear what you are doing and people can think what they want, but to put Kanye in the pantheon of greats when he just steals shit from current producers is stupid. The difference is your track and steely Dan's track are gonna be mils apart, in different genres and timeframes, but sampling Timbaland to make a RnB or Hip hop joint is Incest, Biting and wrong. I'm not making up the rules, as you see there are many who feel the same way independant of what I have said.
