Using a laptop for production - advice please

Alright i plan on picking up a macbook here in the next couple of weeks. Got some questions tho. I want to use the laptop to trigger sounds via midi keyboard. Can someone school me on a good program I could record into, use as a sound module, etc.. I also need a small midi keyboard. Advice?

Personaly.. logic pro and MAC were made for eachother. Small midi would be an axiom 25. And a $150.00 give or take gets a nice fast track pro interface which make the midi and interface a matching pair. They are both m- audio. The axiom around $100.00 logic. Bout $400.00 but is the # 2 most used software in the bizz for a reason.

maybe have a look at logic xpress. i prefer it to the full logic suite. and it's way cheaper.

I have the digi 002r with pt, which is fine but, I'm looking for an all in one DAW, Logic seems like it offers more in regards to making music, not just recording. Why did you choose express over the full? Cost?

I also want to know if the 002R intergrates with logic well?

m/audio stuff is good when it works, had a lot of problems with the project mix i/o and their cheaper "monitor" speakers, and some delta cards with capicators going.

The delta was the only thing that personally mine, the others were stuff I had to tech support workwise, I also find their tech support department not very good had to send back the project mix i/o cause of faulty channels and they sent it back unfixed, or sent it back with new different problems..

not hating on them, just thought you should be aware.

too may to list, reason, reaper, logic, ableton, cubase, pro tools are all good and probably most popular softwares. all boils down to how far you trying to take your music production. are you mainly working on beats, do you do mixdown your own tracks, etc

I would like to point out that reason is not actually a "daw" as you can't track and master with it. It is what I call a "mps" music production software. Producing music and mastering/ tracking are two separate things. I have been in over a hundred studios and if it was not protools it was logic if not both. Yes I did see abelton and cubase as well. But both combined Polly 30% of the studios. All in one "daw" ( digital audio workstation) popularity is based on function more than ease of use. If u use something 15 hours a day it will be easy to use over time. job specific function,reliability,compatability and workflow win over " easy to use things. Reason and fl are so popular because they are easy to steal!!. If it was easy to steal mpcs and g6 phantoms all the wannabies would use them to. If you get logic get pro. If price is an issue, this might not be the game to play ball in. How bout a 60k solid state logic board? Most people would rather buy a used Benz just to look good and flop after one half add hit.
Also, not knocking reason.. it has great sounds and synths.. but really. The underground and local sceen is oversaturated with "reason" sounds.

I just went to logic's site and became convinced. I have pt le 6 (I know), and was thinking of updating but after seeing logic I don't think so. Logic seems like a program better to Make beats, craft sounds in. Plus, with Logic Pro you get a whole bunch more for just a couple hundred dollars difference more. Now to figure out how seemlessly I can get my 002R to work with it.

I found this link. My enginer is the real logic pro/ pro. He has energy and had motu. Of you get logic I will get a setup from him for you .

man that is dumb... most people aren't mixing engineers, and most beat makers wouldn't see the sense of buying a 60k ssl to track beats from their drum machine and keyboard to the computer. Pointing out how much an ssl board has nothing to do with preferring to download reason for free over paying for software... however most people do drive cars and most car drivers can appreciate a nice ride.

while yes you noticed there is a difference between tracking software, and sound building software.... (IE: cubase, and reason) that doesn't really mean reason isn't a daw.... recording is not a prerequisite to being considered a DAW. The term daw is very broad.... fact is, yes.... reason is a workstation .... using digital media and doing everything digitally. Is reason a multi track recording program? no. is it a mastering suite? again no. The dude owns protools, he wants to jump into a DAW such as logic.... I doubt that is because of it's multi track recording and mastering tools.
