mpc 60 w/ new inverter: still high pitched whine?

well it's a 20 years old machine, a little bit of hiss and hum it's pretty normal....
however i put a peace of cork under the inverter and help a lot

try to turn on the machine (pay a lot ot attention) and move the inverter when it's on... i realize it was that in this way, so i put a peace of cork (the cork u can put under the sit or table to understand) and that hiss goes away

Be really f***ing careful if you mess with the inverter while the machine is powered on, the big caps living on the adjacent power supply board can serious hurt/kill you if you touch them.

If you're talking about the noise the machine produces by itself, you may be right.
But, I recently wondered again how hifi the 60 sounds compared to the EMU SP1200.

One thing that lots of people don't consider is that the 60 is actually has a 16bit ADC/DAC, with data stored in special non-linear 12bit format (for lower noise). It sounds very different than the SP1200, but there is more to the character than just the sound. They way the sequencer works ultimately does a lot to how the beats come out. For me the SP "sounds" better, hands down. The 60 is thinner and quieter sounding, less ballsy. Sound aside, the 60 is a much more refined machine and still sounds great in its own way.

If you are talking about which one is noisier, definitely the SP.

I like the analogy that 60 is a japanese car, the SP1200 is an american muscle car. Sorry for being an accomplice to the hijack!

+1, and each machine has its character, although the SP sound is easier to distinguish from other samplers.

I also wondered when reading the specs of the 60 after I bought it, that it has actually a 16 bit adc. I would say there is a kind of "roundness" to the 60 sound that you could miss in a MPC2500 while I felt the 4000 to be somewhere in between these two.

The scooped sound of the 2500 may help on your metal guitar tones.

Did you put the cork in between the metal sockets and board and then tight the sandwich together again with some screws?

It would be amazing if that helped. Anytime I pressed the board back on the sockets, the noise became louder again for some ressonance reasons.

i put it between the chassis and the inverter and i use some glue...
about the sp1200 and mpc60, indeed the 60 is so silent...

about the OT sounds, yeah i like them both... mpc60 is a gentle sound, very smooth, the 1200 is raw and aggressive...

Got the same problem since I played on my used 60 bought on eBay...

Sometimes (about 1 on 50), my 60 run as a brand new baby out of the factory (lighted, freshed and luminated backlight without the high pitch sound) but most of the times, I can't run my baby in the dark cause the backlight isn't enough clear.

I talked with Forat about that and he told me that the problem probably came from a corrupted solder near the backlight region (Don't know where exactly cuz I'm not so familiar with this tech thing).

usually if you replace the backlight, the inverter no longer has to strain to feed the backlight... therefore running at a nominal level, or spec operation.


I suggest doing this first before troubleshooting the inverter.

if VIBRATION is the cause, then isolating the inverter on a piece of DYNAMAT is the best way to go im sure (hell dynamat is good in any mpc that gets ringgy or thuddy.


I had this issue, but after I got the new backlight, 90 percent went away, then after unplugging the external ZIP while doing work and sampling, the rest went away.

what MPC do you have and what kind of compatible inverter you've installed?
where did you ordered it from?
i am looking for an original or compatible inverter for my AKAI S950 preferably in Europe.

I don't know about the S950, but in the MPC60, you can chose any 5V --> about 100V EL FOIL INVERTER.
The inverter is not an Akai specific component.

now the only worry if it needs any modification to fit into the S950.... i am not very good with soldering ....?

Hi guys just getting an old topic back to the front but i think its better like that

If anyone needs to know here is a photo of the inverter in the 60. its smaller one, on the right, right above the floppy. it has two wires connected. one is for power and the other one is the backlight



I just got mine a few days ago and noticed that high pitched constant whine when i booted the MP.

I did a forum search and found out it could have been the inverter. it seems a very easy fix

If the whine comes from the back of the mpc that means it is the power source but if it is from somewhere on the right side closer to the transport buttons that means it is the inverter

To test it what you have to do is to unplug the small white power wire from the inverter, as you can see in the photo i disconnected it (obviously with the mpc turned off). I did this with mine and noticed the whine went away. So thanks to everyone here who posted information, i though i'd post a little something back

Anyone know where to get a new inverter for the 60? Will the s1000 inverter work in the 60 for ex?
