Hmm downloaded this
dope album
one problem though
according to the liner notes an MPC 500 was not used to make it

Kinda disappointed about that
was hoping to hear the extensions and possibilities of the 500 pushed by a ill user
Instead I am hearing the capabilities of :

"wanted to dig down deep and make an EP with limited resources and Swamp Water Plague is the result. Using only a Roland MS-1, Boss SP-303 for efx only, a Shure mic, Tascam DP-01 and a room full of records and CDs. Most rhymes were made up as the beats were constructed on the same day and freestyles. And other rhymes were 3 yrs in the making."

Direct from the liner notes
reading is fundamental yo

Its the man not the machine and even if I did used the 500 for it the results would've been the same. So put that in your pipe and smoke it when you listen to that EP.

oh no my bad... I figured since he has the 500, he talks about the 500 being a good machine... and he made that EP... put 1 and 2 together and you get three, aka I figured he used the 500 in there...

If u have a decent mixer u don't really need the trackmutes. Since the mpc60 has only 8 voices u can easily assign each sound to one of the outs of the mp, and mute the sounds on the mixingboard during recording.

I hear you man, on my MySpace I got a few songs from the 500, Check out 'Dingy Djinn' and 'Forgotten'. There's more but I didn't upload them yet. People think that the 500 can't get that dirty lo-fi but thats because they overlook the bit-grunge feature which dirty up your sound. Also I sample from a cheap tube amp.

I'm working on my new LP as I type this, but I haven't selected a sampler from my arsenal yet but I think I'll do it all with the 500 and put "Dedicated to empeeceeP" on the back :P

For albums I like to select one sampler to do the job so the entire album could sound consistant and as one.

PEACE

OP - I know you said you would like an older MPC, but if you already have the 500, why not get a newer MPC that will be "Cross-Compatible" with the 500? I could be wrong, but I am under the impression that the 500, 1000, and 2500 can read most of each others files (Programs etc), have a CF slot, and are even cheaper than the 60..

Just suggesting because thats what I plan to do LOL.

Might grab the 2500, but the 5000 keeps getting cheaper?!? :o :?

I am not sure how compatible the 500 would be with the 1000 pr 2500 once JJOS is installed which is what would happen.

Also, the 60 is one of the cheapest MPCs if you dont get a fully loaded one. Oh and lets not forget... if somebody already owns a new school mpc why would they get another one that sounds exactly the same when they could go for a unit that has different sonic characteristics?

I'm finding the 2500 anywhere from 800 to 1000 with DVD writer, Full RAM, and it also has efx and time stretch. 60 about same price range, with no features... XL is obviously going to be the cheapest with an average price of 500.

My friend has the 2500 and it loaded my beats, not sure if he had JJOS. I'm not sure it will make a difference, being that the 2500's OS is different than the 500's in the first place. Really need to look into that before making my purchase.. Good Point!

The 500 also loaded his ChopShopped Loops which was cool.

Don't get me wrong, I would love a 60, and have a love for many Akai products. But I guess my reasoning would be to have compatible systems/media storage, along with the advanced features of a "Larger" modern MPC. That way if I decide to sell the 500, my programs will work with the new system. Crossing Fingers.

As far as sonic characteristics, is it really true that the 500 sounds "exactly the same" as the 1000, 2500, or 5000? And will sonic characteristics rule over bang for the buck? A question that will forever be debatable..

first of all, the 60 with no features averages from 350-500 dollars. 800 means it has scsi, the 3.10 os, and the ram expansion... which those alone cost around 500 bucks to buy which is why they sell for 800-1000 bucks. this however is becoming less the case since the 3000s have been coming down in price. last year 1500-1600 bucks was not uncommon and then they drifted down to 1200, and now you are seeing those for 800-900 bucks.

the xl is still more expensive then the 2000 classic and rightfully so... so I would say it is between the 60, 2000 classic, and 500 as cheapest models however that is averaging because this is the used market we are talking about.

now dont get me wrong, I love akai products too... but my love lies in actual akai products and not so much in numark products... though the newer mpcs are quite nice I just prefer the older ones.

now about the features... the 60 has two features not found on any of the new akai machines... excellent build quality, and beautiful 12 bit sound. I know those features dont mean a lot to most people... but if I was the owner of a 500, a machine that sounds completely different would be the logical choice. I wouldn't care about project compatibility because projects get tracked out when finished and because I would be the owner of at least 2 SAMPLERS.... that SAMPLE!!! I dont care about loading up sounds from this and transferring it to that.... owning a 60 means you dont want to transfer files from the computer.... you want to record them through the 60's hardware to get the full effect of the oldschool gear.

but... both of our opinions are quite valid, and I can see it from both angles for sure. Luckily I have a simple solution...

... Get every model! 8)

On a last note, this is not a toy. Its practically heavy and mounted in a metal casing, anyone one saying its cheap plastic never owned one. I could crack someone in the face with it and they'll probably drop dead on impact.
