I'm trying to sync my MPC 3000 with Logic 8.02. I can't seem to get it to work like I could with Cubase 4...I realize Logic won't slave, it will only be the master....

I can get the MPC to start, but the timing is off..the BPM is 92, BPM in Logic is set to 92, I'm trying to sync using MTC. I'm using an M-Audio Axiom as my midi interface between MP and computer, using the Apogee DUet to record. When I press record on Logic the MPC starts but the timing is way slow, then I changed a few things and the timing was better but snare was a double hit and the "new SMPTE code recognized! switch to this code) message came up in Logic....

Just wondering if someone can help me since there is more options on the 3.50 for syncing (I think)

Thanks in advace...if nothing comes up I guess I'll use the high hat trick but I really don't want to resort to lining up a bunch of tracks with a hi hat

thanks yall

Yep ... This is happening more often now with host applications.

Seems host application developers believe their timing engines to be superior.

Slaving to other devices is perceived as a compromise.

So they are often master capable only.

Quite frankly I would rather Logic slave to some thing clock solid rather than it have to be a master for all devices.

The fact you had things working with Cubase suggests more of an issue with how things are setup and routed in Logic.

As MTC is not a tempo reference...
...it is a time position offset reference.

Each machine needs to be appropriately set for correct MTC only function.

Neither here nor there.
Provided MTC is supported then it should work correctly for your application.

Sounds like Logic is "slaving" to the MPC if this message gets displayed.

You may have inadvertently created an MTC loop.

IE: Logic sending MTC to the MPC and the MPC sending it back to Logic.

Apart from sending sync to all ports simultaneously there are no differing sync options in 3.50.

For your example using Logic as an MTC master and MPC3000 as an MTC slave.

In Logic:

Set the tempo to 92.
Set it to be an MTC master ( transmit MTC )
Disable AUTO SYNC IN.
Disable MTC reception.
Disable MIDI "BEAT CLOCK" or "MIDI CLOCK" transmission.
Set a frame rate of 30.

On your MPC3000:

Set the tempo to 92.
Set sync in to the port that MTC is being received on.
Set sync type to MTC.
Set the frame rate to 30.
Disable MTC transmission.
Disable MIDI CLOCK transmission.

Try the above.

Rohan.

thanks Rohan, I believe the frame rate is set to 25 or something different than 30 as the default in Logic, I'm going to check it first thing tommorow...

It means you can track without having to line things up in Logic.

I did this but there was something in these instructions that didn't make sense. First, there isn't such thing as AUTO SYNC IN in Logic 8, at least not in the synchronization options. Do you mean Auto enable external sync(which can be done)?

After these settings I got it working but when play is being pushed on Logic, Logic's sequencer does start but 3K misses two beats in the beginning. After that the mp is on time. Well, if I don't get it working, I quess I gotta record a few bars for 3K to jump in to recording and then trim the samples on Logic. That ain't too complicated. Thou full synchronization would be ofc nice

edit. I found the AUTO SYNC IN option and put it on - didn't get better.

Bump

Would the SMPTE option be a better bet??

im trying hard to find a solution for such an issue... i really wish to use my 3k as a master alongside a daw.. or at least have perfect looping and low latency between the two...

Most manuals that talk about SMPTE syncing (and MTC is basically SMPTE over MIDI) recommend recording a blank bar at the start to allow time for the machines to sync. That used to be standard practice in the tape machine days (i.e. - have some pre-roll and start on the next bar or 15 frames in or whatever was needed).

Not really. Logic can act as slave.

Why not just MIDI clock? Its flawless on my system. Set up a pre-roll to recording (Logic defaults to 1 bar IIRC) and this will start before your record point at which the MPC will kick in.

I press record on Logic the MPC starts but the timing is way slow, then I changed a few things and the timing was better but snare was a double hit and the "new SMPTE code recognized! switch to this code) message came up in Logic....

Sounds like you have the MIDI OUT of your MPC into your MIDI interface IN going to Logic. If you are trying to slave the MPC, there's no need to have this. Just MIDI OUT of interface to MIDI IN MPC.

Deta!L. 700 + days is crazy. I saw this youtube video of this person sequencing a non akai sampler on a computer. Like these complex drum! and bass! patterns in like 30 seconds which were being tracked to a 32! channel! desk! I know my MPC! 3000! has the best sequencer ever made but i need a faster workflow that is kinder to my 3000's parts. Chopping samples on the mpc 3000 is really fast and involves less button pushing so i'll never get rid of it plus its the best hip hop drum sequencer hands down. but if i go into drumbass mode i need that midi! workflow. Someone told me Logic! has a pretty good midi! sequencer which can output to the mpc 3000. I'm thinking about buying it??? From what I understand you have use MTC! and 30 frames etc because the midi! interfaces! /midi! cables don't have rock solid midi! chips???
I don't want to track out to my daw as i track out to my desk. I don't record yet. i just jam.

My aim is to have like a 8 bar sequence running on a 32 or 64 grid! on loop / then just click on the squares to bring hi hats snares rolls etc in an out to build my drum track from the samples loaded on my mpc. And like do that all day. I know you can bring your samples over from the mpc to the daw! and then sequence them which is faster. But i'd rather use my laptop as a midi sequencer or/and as a limiter on the master outs of my desk. Everyone works different and i just want a workflow thats right for me.

if i can pm that would be great. :D

and on a lighter note Thes! One is my fave consistent producer. Pete! Rock! did a beat for m!c gerom!no thats hard to top though.

You can adjust the midi transmission delay to get them on time.
