I'm not a fan of yours Jamon so I won't be visiting.

FIRST: If obtaining the information from JJ's site is the problem, then you'll only be making it worse. Why? Because newbs will have to rely on you to make sure you are on top of his release dates and have all his information translated correctly. Other than that, you add no **** value. And having a login is just retarded. And I wouldnt give you my PI if my life depended on it.

SECOND: Currently Biglobe comes up first when I Google JJOS. It isn't an easy site to navigate but I think of it as Darwin's gauntlet. If you're too stupid to download the right file from his site then you're too stupid to use his software. Period. And guess what? He even makes it so you can't possibly pay him until you've correctly installed his software, so he's probably trying to do this. After all, why take money (or donations for that matter) from someone who you then have to spoonfeed installation?

THIRD: JJ is a smart chap. If he's doing encrypted PayPal transactions there is a **** reason for it. If he's limited his ability to contact him directly, there is a reason for it. And if he wanted a better site, he'd have it.

three links at the moment.
A little more imagination Pastor.... it could build into a vast multimedia multilink experience, i'm sure.

I don't see the harm in doing a more stylish & intuitive front end as a third party for fun, bit like a doing custom job on an MPC. But the payment stuff has to be through biglobe though - trust issues.

Never thought of the site being purposely difficult, perhaps it could have a cryptic crossword or Java Rubics Cube too, just to get in.

I can see JJ not being too fussy about the biglobe site though - it does seem like he's got better things to do - like keeping us and our MPCs happy. And hurrah for that :D :D :D :D :D .

I got most of the wiki working.

I also set it up to automatically update the OS. It's showing 3.01 right now, and should move up to 3.02 when it's released without me having to do anything.

More features to add, and bug checks. But I'm stressed, maybe tomorrow.

good manners, if nothing else.

Akai aren't interested in evolving the mpc1000/mpc2500, but JJ is and provides excellent tools and support for us, he deserves our respect and gratitude

Got to say, I think you guys have been pretty harsh on Jamon. It's a fan site, he doesn't need permission as long as he stays within certain boundaries.

I also think JJ would like to see people spreading the love; it's win-win for everyone.

Yes, sure it would always be nice to have 'official blessing', but to say it's bad manners to not ask is going too far IMO - it's a mutually beneficial arrangement - it promotes JJ OS, it provides the fan with a project he feels passionate about, and hopefully it provides a beneficial service to other MPC users. A fan site is a show of love for both JJ and the JJOS community, so it seems odd to put someone down for showing that love, just because they chose not to ask 'permission'.

Give him some time to set it up properly - I'm sure he'll keep adding to it over time so it becomes a great resource - with a bit of positive encouragement.

You know, if someone would like to set up a site promoting my products and pushing people directly back to my site to buy them, you don't need my permission, go for it :)

I do think the donation thing is a bad idea, you don't want to be taking donations on someone else's behalf. I think JJ would simply prefer people to 'donate' by buying one of his OS!

As for offering downloads of the JJ OS, I think cries of copyright infringement are a bit OTT, as again, I suspect JJ would prefer the OS be gotten hold of as easily as possible. I mean, it's a trial product, so it's free marketing - it still has to be bought direct through JJ. But sure, it can be seen as unauthorised distribution, although many developers do allow this in their licenses.

However, in the new menus on this site, I've chosen to use the direct links to JJ's site - it makes no odds to me, but I would however like to offer archives of the older versions - again, I personally don't see a massive problem with this, I think many people would appreciate it as JJ doesn't offer it on the official site, but if everyone is going to accuse me of copyright infringement, I wont bother :).

If someone who has JJ's contact details could ask him if he has a problem with the forum creating and hosting a public archive of older OS versions, I'd appreciate it. Or forward me JJ's contact details via PM, as I don't have them.

Sounds reasonable Tutor.

I was thinking that I hope you don't feel like this is a competitive site to yours. Your site is a complete resource, and community that I don't intend to try to duplicate. I mostly only visit this one sub-forum, and am coming at it from a specific view, which makes it a subset. Although I see how that could siphon away some of the activity from this sub-forum, it gives back in exchange. I intend to clearly post a Creative Commons license, which will allow you to freely use anything you find.

So if there were a compilation of information you could use, like if there were the complete archive of firmware and JJ wants it mirrored and you want to make an archive on your site, then you'd be free to take what you want and use it however you please. You or anyone else may also post info and links to your commercial products, and as long as it's relevant to the JJOS perspective on the MPC, then I don't see why I'd remove them. Sharing is cheap enough, and benefits everyone, so why not?

About the donations, it needs to be clear that I never intended to intercept them. PayPal uses email addresses, and when you send money to someone, you use PayPal.com. That means, PayPal is the one who is the middleman, and they forward the money. JJ OS is bought with PayPal only, so I thought it was a good opportunity to simply create a donate button that links to PayPal.com's donation form, with the JJ info already filled out. Then people just type in a credit card or login to PayPal.

It still may be a good idea, and the setting that is blocking unencrypted web payments is not something you have to knowingly set. The person behind JJ OS probably has no idea about that setting and how it'd prevent someone from doing what I tried. If they did set it, then it would be for other reasons, as they tried to integrate it into their site, and they would not know how it'd affect other odd possibilities like a 3rd-party donation link. I think if someone spoke to them they'd be totally fine with it.

I also agree they should be fine with mirrors of their firmware. It is already copy protected, and it is common for software to be mirrored on shareware sites. Developers usually want their apps to be on as many trafficked sites as possible, since it all increases their worth. If someone leeches the firmware off any other site, the JJ OS people don't lose anything other than bandwidth costs, and maybe download statistics. The leechers still need to buy a password, from the official JJ OS site.

Part of the web culture is that power is distributed. It isn't like setting up a television broadcast station; anyone can make a website, for very cheap. Links and shared information is what makes this medium great. We can earn money along the way, but it is often increased as information spreads. That mindset of closely guarded territory and property doesn't quite fit here. If every visitor to this site made their own MPC site, it'd change things, but it could even result in a boost of traffic and sales for Tutor.

If I'm wrong though, and people did have a legitimate reason why my site was causing harm, I'm open to the possibility of just shutting it down and redirecting to the official JJ OS site. I don't lose much. I enjoy identifying problems, and trying to design websites to solve them. Even if it's just for me, it's fun, and interesting to invent this site. Breaking social rules wasn't even on my mind, I just saw a technical opportunity for innovation.

links and information yes ... but your site has neither, it just has the software hosted locally. That's what made me cry about copyright infringement. Maybe it's not a problem, JJ's own site doesn't have big copyright notices saying you can't redistribute the software so maybe he doesn't care. But it would seem polite to ask.

As I've already said, I think a wiki would be a great help. But what's available on jjos.net now don't impress me much ;)

a wiki will be great if it is utilized.
reaper is a good example - great forum, great community (way bigger than ours)
but its wiki isn't very well publicized or utilized...
best of luck though and again your sentiment is great.

I got enough done to show a preview of where I'm at.

I started a page about patterns to experiment with the site, and also because I wanted to better understand them myself.

It's kind of fun. With some refinement, I could see this kind of site being beneficial. I need to think more about organization and formatting though.
