There is no better 4x4 pad controller on the market than my Akai MPD 32. I demo all of the ones available in the market place. MPD 32 easily wins out even when compared to Maschine. I believe you are the one that needs to do a little more research. You will find that Akai has the market for quality pad controllers locked down. Even Sound On Sound rated the MPD 24 higher than the Trigger Finger which I don't believe is being sold anymore.

and the pads suck IMO... you think they are brilliant... but demoing is about as far as gear gets used with you.. spend an evening actually making beats with any mpd and you will see the difference in the way your fingers feel when compared to the mpcs.

Askia Shaheed wrote:MPC 5000/2500s build quality is equal to or better than the MPC 2000/2000XL. I have owned these products for years. Take all the emotions out of your assessment.

yeah, well you went from "numark mpcs are better built than the 3000" (which you are an idiot if you think that) to the "2500/5000 being better built than the 2000/xl".. (pretty much the lowest quality products the old akai ever made.. yet still great)
the 2500, the 5000, and the mpd 32 are the only products you can even stick up for in anything you've said because you know I am right about the rest of their gear being totally garbage when it comes to build quality. I mention the mpk, you try saying something about the kronos which is not even a controller, or anything to do with controllers... not sure where you were going there... but every other midi controller in that price range is better than one that the keys pop on.

A guitar center employee even stated here on the forums that the mpk is the most returned product due to defects out of anything sold in the store.

Askia Shaheed wrote:Keyboard controllers...if you do a little research, you will find that there really isn't a leader in low priced keyboard controllers.

no, but if you do a little research, you will find there is a loser... in fact, you dont need to do any research... I did it for you above.

For a guy that feels Akai/Nurmark MPCs are cheaply built....you spend a lot of time in the forums talking about them. lol

for a guy who loves his numark gear so much, you never keep any of it long enough to know how durable it really is.

I get it. It is your opinion. I currently own and use the MPD 32 and you don't. I believe I said the MPC pads are not like an MPC. No pad controller is just like an MPC. I standby my statement that the MPD 32 is the best pad controller on the market and its even better than Maschine. *Do I need to post pics of my 2000XL, MPD 32, and Maschine sitting side-by-side? :P

You are getting so emotional now that you are calling names? Very childish of you. And I have never said Numark MPCs are better built than the MPC 3000. You are trying to compare $3000-$4000 MPC to a $1000 MPC which is obsurd. I compared the Akai/Numurk MPCs with the old Akai MPC 2000/2000XL as they are in the same price range. MPC 5000/2500 are far superior to the MPC 2000/2000XL...and build quality is equal to or better. MPC 2000/2000XL screens are notorious for burned out pixels. If you are claimining that the MPC 2000/2000XL have a better build quality, you are either lying or you have never owned these products....or both.

I only talk about gear I own. I don't need to refer to a Guitar Center employee. Do you currently own any of the gear your are talking about? I mentioned the Kronos ($3000 keyboard workstation) because you implied the Akai produces the worst quality products on the market. This is far from accurate...and I pointed out all the complaints Korg has received releasing the worst built keyboard workstation I have ever purchased.

mr_debauch wrote:for a guy who loves his numark gear so much, you never keep any of it long enough to know how durable it really is.

I've owned the MPC 2500 for 3 years. I've owned the MPC 5000 for 2 years. How much longer to I have to keep them in order to determine how durable they are? I have owned the MPC 2000 for 2 years, the 2000XL for 6 years, the 3000 for 4 years, the 4000 for 2 years...and sold MPCs for 6 years. I believe I am fully qualifed to speak on the quality of MPCs. I have kept at least one MPC in my studio for the past 14 years.

You do know that majority of your posts are bashing Akai/Numark products. I get it. Don't buy their products if you feel that way. But there are numerous people in this forum that enjoy their Akai/Numark products that you claim 'suk.' Your opinion is noted and will not sway any of us who are using these products.

By the way peep this video. Mike Dean has several controllers in this video. Including the one you are bashing and appears to have never owned:

As a hobbyist (gear collection if you ask some of my "peers" in the forums), I don't mind spending a lot of money on gear. I love to buy and try out any new product that would be a worthy addition to my studio. I haven't been doing much in the lab until recently. I should be picking up a 2500 or 1000 within the next few weeks......perhaps even an MPC 5000. Why? Because these are quality products.

First of all I never said the maschine is better (never even mentioned it.. you brought that up) what I said is that every MPD model's pads are badly designed they should function identically to the mpc pads since they are using the same hardware (sensor sheet and rubber) yet they dont due to a design flaw. I'm sure you would have no complaints if they did it right.. would you? I think that would make them great, yet... they fail at their main task...

I was saying original akai company MPCs are better built than (with better parts than) numark mpcs... how is that absurd when it's true? Sure, maybe you paid 3000$ or 4000$ dollars for the products... but that doesn't mean they cost that now. Generally mpcs are mostly in similar price ranges.

It's okay, I own numark products and have done shows using numark products.. that is why what I say has validity... but tell me where I said akai/numark "suks" ? I said again for the record, that numark uses garbage quality components (fact) because they use the cheapest of the cheap... and that they dont design many of their products well (again, fact.. I proved it but you are a fan of popped keys and pads that dont work properly) and I also said some of their products are overall GARBAGE (written in caps and everything) because that is fact.. their mixers are definitely included in that category.. again, I know... If you can separate me acknowledging a company's flaw with corporate loyalty (which you have) you would see the justification I have at not being thrilled with numark... you are the emptysea of numark.

I never implied that you said Maschine is better. I just pointed out that in my opinion, the MPD 32 is the best pad controller on the market to include Maschine. I don't feel my MPD 32 is badly designed. I have no complaints. If I want pads like an MPC, I buy an MPC. There is very little difference (IMHO) between MPC pads and MPD pads. The difference to me lies in the fact that the MPD seats the pads in such a way they don't have the same height protruding from the faceplate as an MPC. I say this because I have MPD pads installed on my 2000XL and don't see/feel to much of a difference. As I stated earlier, I installed the fat pads on the MPC for cosmetic purposes. They look and feel great on an MPD 32. But the MPD 32 worked great right out the box. I do not define the MPD32 as a failure by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, I believe its the Trigger Finger you spoke about that is discontinued.

mr_debauch wrote:

Your comments were unnecessary as no one said or implied that the current MPCs are better built than the MPC 3000. Everyone knows that the MPC 3000s outer case is very solid..and heavy. The outputs and inputs have very solid connections. Outstanding product. But anyone who compares a $3000 plus MPC with a $1600 MPC is an idiot. lol In my opinion, the pads of the MPC 3000 are no more superior to the flagship MPC pads. The buttons on the MPC 3000 are plastic (like all MPCs)...the transport secton has larger buttons than newer MPCs. But I have never seen a broke plastic button. The tact switches under these buttons wear out on the MPC 3000 as frequent as the newer MPCs. This is based off my years of experience. I have never sent an Akai/Numark MPC in for repair to replace a tact switch. But I am sure some one has because tact switches eventually need to be replaced. I have sent mulitple MPC 3000s to Akai Japan to get tact switches replaced. And I have recently replaced tact switches on an MPC 2000 myself. MPCs use commonly found tact switches.

I would expect a $3000-$4000 product to be better built than a $1600 product. But as I shown in all those You Tube videos, quite a few producers that make a living off of music are doing quite nicely with the lower cost MPCs you are here complaining about.

As I mentioned earlier, I am always willing to try out new products. And I don't need a Guitar Center employee to tell me anything. I donot hold back my feelings about any substandard product for any reason. And I will be the first person to tell anyone in these forums if I like or dislike a piece of equipment...and never have to justify a purchase. Visit the Korg Forums. I was the first one in the forum to own a Kronos. And the first to question its build quality.

I speak on items I own or use. It appears you just repeat what you have heard on the internet. SOS gave the a MPK49 favorable review. This may or may not mean something to you. But you posted links to quality issues of the MPK purchased second hand. And I posted a You Tube link of a professional studio with an MPK in it. In the end, if you buy what you feel is a crappy product, take it back. And all new products have a 1 year warranty. Depends on where you buy it from, you can get a 2-3 year warranty. I'm done talking about keyboard controllers......

You clearly stated how you feel about Akai/Numark products in numerous threads including this one. You claim they use garbage quality products. I chimed in because I have ownsed Akai/Numark products such as the MPC 5000, 2500, and MPD32 for quite sometime and never heave I felt these products are garbage quality. Numerous producers (see the videos I posted) use these products to make music. I am sure if these products were garbage that wouldn't be using them. And all of these producers I shown videos for used older MPCs at one point or the other. That should tell you something.

I use MPCs. I don't own any other Akai/Numark product. I have no need for them. But do you know what I also own? I own the Korg Kronos...a Roland Fantom G and A90 keyboard controller (one of the best ever created)....I own Native Instrument's Maschine and Battery 3...I own Yamaha monitors...I own Technics turntable....I own both Apple and Sony computers...

You speak of corporate loyalty? My loyalty lies in quality products. I never...ever...gave the MPC 1000 great reviews. Again...I dissed that product everytime I got a chance too. Pretty much what you do here today. lol Again...I am just pointing out that you spend a lot of time bashing Akai products. Its all good. You have a right to your crusade..I guess. But save yourself some heartache. Buy or keep using an "old" Akai MPC.

By the way...I mean no disrepect to you or anyone else. I am not attacking you or upset with you for any reason. We just have a difference of opinion. I don't want anyone to sh!t a brick. Its all love.

And to not hijack the thread further ( )....the MPC 4000s keyroup sampler, its modulation matrix, and a few other things are more powerful than the MPC 5000. However...the MPC 5000s has numerous improvements that surpass the MPC 4000 especially in a live set-up. From chopping samples, hard disk recording, automation of most paramters, advanced Q-link controls, enhanced quantize/swing parameters, synth engine, etc that MPC 5000 can easily hold its weight against comparable features. Its up to the end-user what features are most important. For the record, I want an MPC that does what both these MPCs can accomplish.

As for your youtube videos, it wouldn't matter if the queen of england bought an mpk brand new AS WELL as an mpk second hand ... they both would be built the same way.. no?

dude, you realise you try to put me on blast by using the internet as a resource and than you try and quote SOS as a credible internet source? hahaha, so what it is? not to mention, SOS isn't the place to find out user info on the durability of products once they have been on the market for a while... they test things day 1 and that's it.

I combined what I know for a fact from first hand experience with some stuff written by a 3rd party on the internet... the mpk thing, it doesn't take ownership to see the flaw there.. in fact, the thing I love about the internet is the ability to avoid potential flaws like that.

I'm sorry but you are slightly off the mark. The conversations I and other have had about Maschine versus an MPC (pick anyone you like), we were disussing the actual feature set...what these products can accomplish. Build quality was not really part of the discussion as Maschine is pretty much a plastic drum pad controller.

I use Akai/Numark MPCs. The MPC 5000/2500 are quality products (repeatded again for emphasis). I am speaking from personal ownership and use. I posted the You Tube videos to show professionals using the same products I like. You can take away anything you want from that. I have to add that those producers (any myself as well) are not lacking in funds and can buy any tool we see fit. I will speak for them and say they wouldn't be using Akai/Numark products if they felt the products were "cheap amd crappy" as you put it.

I am getting the feeling you are offended that people enjoy using the products to dispise for some off reason. Honestly...have you ever owned an Akai MPC 5000, 2500, and 2000XL?

You made a comment in an internet forum dedidcated to Akai MPCs regarding poor quality. There are numerous forum members here that use an Akai MPC 5000 and 2500 everyday. I could could be way off base..please correct me if I am wrong. But from what I can tell, you have never owned an MPC 5000 or 2500. So your opinions can't really be taken seriously...as you really have no first hand experience with these products.

I brought up the SOS reviews because.....its a review. Their so called "Day 1" test are more credible than your "Day 1" tests. You are correct about one thing though. SOS isn't the place to find out user info about the durability of products. You go to a source that has been using these products for years. With that said, I offer you my services. As the first person in this forum to own the MPC 2500 and 5000 ( :P ) with years of experiencing using MPCs, I am willing to honestly answer any question you have. OR just do a forum search and pull up my old threads.

I am talking about build quality of products that I have owned. You can't really bring anything to the debate if you haven't owned these products. Is the Kronos as well built as the Fantom G? No. I can speak on it as I own both. Is the MPC 2000/2000XL superior in anyway to the MPC 5000/2500..build quality or otherwise? Other than having SMPTE....No. *Note that the MPC 2000 Studio Plus w/Ram upgrade was the same price as the MPC 5000 when released.

I have no idea what these famous producers are driving. But I am sure we can find it on You Tube as well.

I get the feeling you are offended when anyone has something less than brown nosing numark.. As I said earlier, I have numark gear too.. I use it, but just because I went with their stuff doesn't mean I'm gonna pretend it's the best thing ever.. I dont have corporate loyalty like you admitted to having.

it is what it is... you think every component on every one of their machines is top notch (and superior in build quality to anything akai made before the acquisition by numark)... great. I mentioned a few things that were not great, you dont agree (which is fine)

as for:

I never put it as "cheap and crappy" .. I said numark is known for using garbage quality components.. because they are... maybe you found two or three products that are not too bad, but look at the rest of what they make.

as for those producers, you can try and speak for them... but you really cant.
But my speculation as to why they use numark gear is because they like the features.. they like the capabilities of the machines.. has that ever crossed your mind? Because that is a totally different thing from what I was talking about.

Now lets take a music professional who gigs a lot... maybe a DJ for example since he/she would probably be lugging the equipment around several times a week..
name one professional dj who has a numark turntable/mixer rig (that isn't being paid to do so)... nobody chooses numark in that field....

in closing, i'm done in this thread.. numark has the mpc product line which is their top end product... fun to use, great for making beats.. But you cant rationalise with somebody when you say "the keys on the mpk can pop off, and they make terrible cd players" and the response you get is "no that is not true because the 5000 is built like a tank" :?

Indeed.

Anyway, I think most of members here can agree that Alesis / Numark / Akai Professional (three different brands with the same manufacture, I'll just call it Alesis) are NOT known for great product durability & product support.
I cannot really blame on them though, because unfortunately this is how most of electronics manufactures do today, and general consumers seem to be less and less concerned about product durability.
Having said that, Alesis can do better product design, so that their products can provide better feel to users and longer product life.

For instance, one Alesis active speakers (I think it was MK2) are known for blowing capacitors used for the speaker driver inside, for short period of usage. Part of the reason was that they didn't put heat sink or even empty space around the capacitors. Things like that could've been avoided by having better circuit design.

And, I heard many occasions that, Akai MPK49's drum pads are not responsible at all, a light hit usually don't even trigger pads. For the record, the pad sensor used on MPK49 are exactly the same type of sensor that are used on MPC-2000 and 2500, etc., but due to the enclosure design (there is too much gap between rubber pads and pad sensor on MPK49) it makes totally different result. Things like that could've been avoided by testing prototype in depth before releasing the product.

My homeboy, my wife and I were talking about this last night, not mpc's but electronics in general.

Manufacturers have been using us as free testing dummies for years now, to the point were

"general consumers seem to be less and less concerned about product durability".

I can't stand that, it grinds my gears and you are right. I think a big part of it is because they wanna rush products to market and make bucks even though the things are fully tested, it may be cheaper to let the people do the testing and only fix those with problems rather than pay for fully testing each one. It's morally and actually wrong to operate that way. When we pay thousands of dollars, pounds rubbles whatever for an mpc (studio gear mostly isn't cheap) we expect the damn thing to work :x as described and designed and fixes/patches for whatever little bugs remain to be quickly on the way.

I guess you forgot the part where I bashed the MPC 1000 several times a day for like a year or so. You also missed the part where I listed all the gear I own or have owned which includes Roland, Korg, Yamaha, and NI Products. Why do you keep overlooking these facts? I clearly stated that the MPC 3000/60 are probably the most robust MPCs ever built at a $3000-$4000 price tag. I compared the Akai/Numark MPC 5000/2500 to the old Akai MPC 2000/2000XL. These products all sold in the same price range ($1600-$2500) when they were released. Akai/Numark MPCs are equal to or better than the 2000/2000XL. The MPC 2500 is light years ahead of the 2000XL in so many ways no matter which OS you use. I own the 2000XL and want to replace it with the 2500 if I can find one for a reasonable price. Take all the emotions out of the debate and see what I am saying.

I don't know which Numark gear you use. But its obviously not the MPC 5000 or 2500.....

mr_debauch wrote:I never put it as "cheap and crappy" .. I said numark is known for using garbage quality components.. because they are... maybe you found two or three products that are not too bad, but look at the rest of what they make.

Really? "Cheap and crappy" versus "garbage quality"? In keeping this civil, I don't need to say anything about your statement as it speaks for itself. (http://www.webster.com) :P

mr_debauch wrote:as for those producers, you can try and speak for them... but you really cant.
But my speculation as to why they use numark gear is because they like the features.. they like the capabilities of the machines.. has that ever crossed your mind? Because that is a totally different thing from what I was talking about.

Again, I use the MPCs we are talking about. You are trying to come up with so many alternative theories to why someone would use an Akai/Numark product besides the obvious...that they are quality products. The only way you will know if they are quality products is to use them.

mr_debauch wrote:in closing, i'm done in this thread.. numark has the mpc product line which is their top end product... fun to use, great for making beats.. But you cant rationalise with somebody when you say "the keys on the mpk can pop off, and they make terrible cd players" and the response you get is "no that is not true because the 5000 is built like a tank" :?

You are here trying to debate products that you don't own or use. You are trying to debate products that I don't own or use. I use MPCs and that is why I am here still going in circles with you. If Akai/Numark put out a keyboard that easily breaks, I will be the first person to say to not purchase it (going back to what I said about the MPC 1000). Spend your hard earned money wisely. I do...most of the time.

This whole problem came from when manufacturers started letting consumers tell them what a product should do.
Prior to making this mistake they would design a product, test a product then build a product.
Consumers would then look at the features and decide if it would do what they were after.
Now they simply chase their tails trying to make their product have an incredible feature set full of nonsense that isn't needed but someone said they wanted.

You simply can't do proper design and testing with these methods.

To further complicate this, they added the aspect of building cheaper products with planned short lifespans to reduce long term cost.

Now that consumers have these expectations, no end is in sight.

If a manufacturer does not meet or exceed my expectations, I will buy a product from a different manufacturer that does.
