Yeah, I don't think it should be called Dilla trick at all. (Actually OP never said that it was Dilla's OWN technique.) I heard that many keyboardists use this, but disadvantage is that you can't use swing correction on MPC.
If you are using MV-8000/8800, MPC-4000, MPC-5000, or Yamaha RM1x, it is not even necessary to do that, since those sequencers have better resolutions than 96PPQ.
