As a sampling musician you have to get into the mindset that a lot of the sounds you use have given you a "helping hand", and basically look past it.
I make everything my own regardless of where I get it from.
yeah.. i've never got how people can say that they dont like to "cheat" and then go out and sample stuff they didnt create themselves.. its hypocrisy.. its the same as - "i will think of others as cheaters when they use material they didnt create themselves, but i will look away when i do it myself" lol
there is nothing wrong with using a drumlibrary.. in fact, you could say that it is even less cheating than sampling, because they tend to be made in a way so that they are neutral, where YOU have to put in the work to make things fit well - compared to sampling something premade, where it has been processed to fit something, and where you get character for free without lifting a finger.. it is far more getting a helping hand than when using something neutral where character, taste and style comes from your own personal choices..
BUT none of this should even matter if you sample stuff.. you cant sample stuff and then feel pride becauise "atleast i didnt use a drum library"
because when you do that, you put yourself lower on the scale than the ones that creates everything themselves that feels pride because "atleast i didnt sample anything"
which in turn put themselves lower on the scale than the ones that takes things even further and build their own instruments - "atleast i this music is truly my own, because the result isnt much determined by the creator of the instruments i use"
where people get so controlling that they need to know everything about the material used to build the instrument to be able to feel its their own music..
but it doesnt really stop there..
the only true and actual way to create music that is truly and purely your own creation is to give birth to yourself in an absolutely dark vacuum, void of anything that could reach your senses.. only then would anything you create truly be your own, only then could you attempt to invent music from scratch with no influenses to lead you or give you ideas.
but people like to force their egos into what they do, and that can lead to feeling pride about all kinds of things that shouldnt be so relevant.. it shoudlnt be relevant if the music, the end result of the work where the biggest priority..
if everyone could simply push a button that lead to music automatically being created, you would still see people trying to push their egos into that process just so they could justify calling it their own creation
but with a bit of perspective its all a bit silly imo.. like i said before, i think it is better to feel proud about the end result rather than what metod you used to get it, because that should be irrelevant if you cared more about the music instead of the method
tbh, i think the people that has the biggest problem with it, are the ones that the most need to do it, not only because you can push the ego back a bit by doing so, but mostly because it can lead to new doors getting opened, leading to new musical growth.. there are people feeling so proud about building their own programs and synths that they cant consider doing anything else.. but had they put the ego back, and tried incorporating something else, it could have lead to their music flourishing like never before.. its a kind of pride that isnt really good for you imo
