It's about as broad as it is long. Ian has made the main points, but it's also worth considering that certain turntables won't play at certain speeds.
I've got a set of 1210s and they will play at the usual 33 1/3 or 45 rpm. But then I've got a Stanton T120 because it will play at those speeds and 78.
Ortofon do a specific needle called the Arkiv I think specifically for recording vinyl. I assume for "Arkiv-ing" your records haha. I've never gone wrong with their products, although they are quite pricey.
