I'm fighting to get it to be worked on. The MPC5000 is my baby, and I want to see it updated. when I have more, I'll post it. take that however you like.

Look. I appreciate your posts. I really do. I think Akai's presence here really helps. But as a product manager at one of the largest software companies in the world, I know the difference between having pet projects and having something funded, prioritized and on the company's internal roadmap. I also understand the difficulties of getting such projects worked on when the company is gearing up to release a new set of products.

So while I appreciate that the 5000 is near and dear to your heart and that if it were up to you, you'd prioritize an update, I think it is totally unacceptable to let such rumours continue when there are clearly no specific plans. I've seen product managers at my own company make the kinds of statements above to customers,...and then leave for another company 6 months later. No accountability. No corporate memory of the informal statements made on a 3rd party site. Nothing but pissed off customers. It doesn't do anyone any good. Until I hear an official statement from the company that Akai intends to continue supporting the 5000 with new updates, your statements mean nothing.

Editing this to keep it productive....

BTW - Xparis I didn't mean to suggest that none of your statements are valid, just that on this issue we need to see progress or official commitments. After all, it's been years since a proper update and there are realissues with a device you are currently selling as part of your current lineup. You have to understand the frustration...

akai have done absolutely NOTHING concerning the mpc5k update since Dan promised it 3 months ago. It is not a priority for the 4 students coding the Ren software
And once the new products ship, guess what the priority would be? fixing all the bugs....and writing new functionality....

thats why theres no update
thats why they cant even tell you what the new os will contain
it wouldnt surprise me if its a lie just to get people to think akai care about their customers, which obviously they dont

they came in here admitting things were done badly in the past, and committed to changing this...and then DISAPPEARED for two months...

no apologies, no nothing....and definitely NO MPC5K Update

XParis... out of curiosity, knowing that you literally wrote the book (manual) on the 5000, what improvement(s) would you like to see included in the 5000 os update?

no problem. I just posted pics of my studio in the environments thread. you'll see there's a 5000 at the center of it all. Still my favorite :)

5000 Also still my favorite even though I have to tip toe around it in order for it not to freeze, but I don't think I would buy another Akai Pro product again.

Guys,

I respect your opinions but for me the idea of an 5000 is nice, all the crap that comes with it isnt. I sold mine for a 4000 do miss some features but at least it sync's to my DAW without problems.

OS3 update may change that, please fix the Midi Beat Clock issues, How difficult can it be to get a sync working like it does in 4000? a Machine made in 2002... clearly a step back.

But hey, if MPC5k OS was developed further no one would care about the REN

Peace

Exactly! The other option would be to at least allow the software to work with existing hardware so that folks who have already invested (and contributed to Akai's bottom line/survival) can at least benefit from the company's latest project. As it stands Akai is pretty thumbing their noses at current hardware owners and expecting them to ditch their hardware and purchase one of their new controllers. I guess they are adopting the Detroit Model in which they expect customers to buy a new model every few years. At least with cars they issue regular recalls and defect remedies.

I don't think so. Ren is hardware + comp, MPC is standalone. So it depends on what you want. More power with the computer on the table and in your head or a oneinabox hardware solution. You always can do much more with a software only (or hybrid) solution, but it bores me. MPC is something special. The last track I've released was MPC 5000 only, and people couldn't believe it. Other point for updates is, sustainability pays off on quality products. When the 5000 is still supported by Akai devs, the policy throws a good shadow to potential buyers of Akai products. imho big damage has been done on the launch when it was labeled 5000 instead of 3500 (loved the 3000 reference), because the 5000 had to stand up against the "old" 4000, which is still one of the biggest beasts out there.

Anyway, the MPC 5000 is my most beloved mpc ever, I even have 2 of them (one at home, one in the studio). The punch is outstanding compared to my MV8800. Although midisync and timing issues drive me mad too. Those have to be fixed.

Also would like to see the direct record function improved. Why can't it simply be a static recording on the track without assigning a note to it? Audiodata instead of MIDI, linked to the track position AND the program (for filtering etc). There it should read the sequence and track name instead of a new sample name. Other thing is, you even can't direct record with count in, so I always have to trim the recording to get the start on the first note right.

And the pitch envelope thing another guy was asking for shouldn't be a big deal.

So Akai bring some new ideas up with the ren (haven't looked yet)? Maybe some of them can be transferred into the 5000?

That said, OS 2.5 or 3 would be ace. Thumbs up for your baby, xparis!

My question to Xparis is has Akai thought about asking JJ to do an MPC5000 version of JJOS, at least this will give the OS an update it deserves. Also this would bring the community together and maybe JJ could make the OS compatible with the REN. At the end of the day its all about selling more units, and if you look at how the MPC1000 & MPC2500 has sold since his work, why not allow it for the MPC5000? If there are issues of man hours to devote to the MPC5000 then as always with software development, get a contractor to do it, and in this case JJ. It would also benefit him in terms of keeping him working on hardware only MPC's. After all you have to admit its made the MPC's more powerful with JJOS.

Could this ever happen and has it been suggested?

A JJOS for the MPC 5000 has never been officially denied. But chances are very little, mainly because JJ doesn't work together WITH akai and I don't think this will ever happen.

I don't think JJ had any involvement in the 5000 OS, so unless he's willing to try reverse engineering the OS (very difficult or impossible, very illegal), it's a non-starter.

But yes, if he could do something it would be fantastic. I don't know how these things work, perhaps there's a hardware modification you can make to allow an independent operating system to be installed into the 'shell' of the hardware. This is probably still illegal, a bit like PS3 modding in some countries. Personally, I'm definitely of the opinion that once you've bought hardware, it's yours to do as you please with it, so if you want to put your own homebrew OS in it, that's your decision.

After all, the 5000 hardware is very nice, it is just the OS that is a POS. I've been working on a project and decided to use the 5000 mainly due to having access to the synth, and it's been like pulling teeth. Laggy screens, programs refusing to output sound, veng errors, annoying 'features' that get in the way of workflow etc. Yesterday after one veng error crash too many, I gave up and moved back over to the 2500.

Whoa, never knew it's that bad... :/
