Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

thoughts. This other drive says its hot swappable, http://www.psism.com/psiiic.htm

but then below it says not on the MPC,

also the main point of the IDE Kiosk Flash Media Card Reader would be the speed, but research makes me believe that the mpc would not benefit from the speed because of this article http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/modesUDMA-c.html which basically says to use ultra dma mode on these type drives the motherboard or device must use a controller and on midicase he writes "Reader's that use a "controller card" are not compatible."
So I'm hesitant to attempt the IDE KIOSK drive due to this information. Though they are different drives and just thoughts, I'm thinking the atapi drive is the only viable option for the mpc and that only ATAPI drives will be hot swappable on the MPC, but really I have no clue. I most likely will not order the IDE kiosk ever, due to fear of it not working or being hotswappable. I may however eventually go for the atapi one from compuapps and get back to you all with my results.

Hey Error,

I think we are nearing closer to an answer - maybe I will email compuapps regarding their ATAPI drive and find out if it is 'natively hot-swappable' it appears from one of the links you posted that;
http://www.psism.com/psiiic.htm
"Model IIC/ R312XX00I50XBH03R reader is not natively hot-swappable, and it works hot-swappable with software drivers which is included."

That would indicate that if the drive requires 'software' to be hot-swappable then it won't be hot swappable with the Akai MPC2000xl. I imagine that the hot-swap function was be 'native' to the device itself, so I guess another email to compuapps on which devices are natively hot swap and then best to just go from there.

I'm currently busy with a lot of assignments for university, although I will try and give Akai Pro a call in the United States and ask them about the Card Readers - when I asked for a service manual and specs sheet the first time I called in regards to the PSU they wouldn't send me one, although maybe they will be willing to answer questions related to Card Readers.

Another form of narrowing the devices that MPC-Stuff and the like sell, is to find somebody who has installed one and ask them what the drive displays itself as, if it displays as ATAPI then I would probably go with the ATAPI drive.

I will continue doing research and let people know, I just wish I had the funds to order it asap, oh well only a week now.

I have ordered the OmniFlash™ ATAPI 741 Multislot Flash Card Reader/Writer - it was 62.26 US dollars shipped. I will report back with details after installation.

Wow, great find! I cannot really tell the difference between the ATAPI 741 and the Kiosk mode CF reader (I think they are both same hardware, but different firmware, but I want to know difference between the two.)
I might order the CF reader!

mate go for ATAPI, is better, the other you can risk that is not hot swappable so why risk? if ur matter is speed u are really dealing with a false problem

No, I was just wondering about the difference between the two (what's Kiosk mode?).
Since you ordered ATAPI version and that's the one works with MPC-2000X, I'd order the ATAPI version no point of ordering the other one.

That's great news, i recently bought one from Conrad, and i have some problems with it not begin recognized. What CF card do you use for the ATAPI741?

Got mine installed. Works perfect, is hot swappable. Here are the issues I have come to so far. The power connector is on the other side, so the original akai floppy power is to short to reach it, Some modification will have to be made, also make sure you get an ide cable with all pins open, avoid ones with a blocked out pin in the middle. though drilling out the middle block on the end to the mpc board will work. I've tested a kingston 512mb and it was perfecto. psoul how did you get the power on yours?

I wish I knew about the CF reader when I was looking for one!
