best gear for live beats n' stuff?

If it gives you any insight my live setup is as follows.

Positions: Left to Right
MPC | DJ MIXER | TURNTABLE | KP3

MPC (Mixer Channel Left)
Turntable (Mixer Channel Right)

Signal Chain
MPC + TURNTABLE > MIXER > KP3 >

Midi Chain
MPC (Source) > KP3 (Slave)


This works well for me, I can easily access the sampler and keep transitioning seamless with traditional DJ mixing. The KP3 adds post FX flavor to beats and breaks.

This might not be the best place to come for MPC advice though, a large majority of the people on this board have no idea what they're talking about, myself included.

Haynes also rocks a nanopad pretty hard, so I doubt the hardware has really anything to do with it.

i just got an MPC 4000 a month ago and a MC909 two weeks ago. Here is the chronology...

1) two turntables and a mic (1990's)
2) turntables, mic, kaos pad (2000's)
3) turntables, fantom S, kaoss pad (2005)
4) turntables, fantom S, kaoss pad, V-synth (2007)
5) turntables, V-synth, kaoss pad, box samplers(2009)
6) turntables, samplers, V-synth, SU700(2011)
Now, this summer, I will be sequencing in the MPC 4000 the flow will be this...

MPC4000---->midiA--> DR880---->rack samplers
midiB ----> AN200 or V-synth
mididC---->MC909----> Radias
midiD---->Sonic Cell

Turntable, kaoss pad

Sometimes the V-synth will be in the MPC or in front of the MC909. At times the MC909 will lead the sequence. All of this done through an edirol 550 midi patchbay. Note there will only be one turntable from now on.

Our group has a live electric guitarist, (female) vocalist and percussion as well.

for hands on control i really can say enuff about the korg esx1 trust ulls be doing all kinds of crazyness with the fx on that joint.

and the quality of the fx/filters and evelopes is superior to the sp505 and 303.

i cant comment on how the 404 sounds and the sp-555


the fx on the maschine are aight but the filters are cheap sounding imo

Hi,

I'm a MPC 1000 user. The MPC 1000 can only load one project at a time, making it impossible to go from one beat to another in a live performance without making "loading pauses" or "dead spaces".

I'm thinking of buying the MPC Studio. Here's my question: can the MPC Studio software navigate through or load multiple projects at a time so I can avoid making pauses between every beat in a live performance? (I can't find any videos or other information about the MPC Studio's live performance capabilities.)

I would be great if the software could permit me to mix different beats, go from one beat to another seamlessly, etc. in a live context.

that's crazy. you must loading whole songs in as audio or something. just load in 10 kicks, 10 snares, 10 hihat and add a ton of sequences. you could have hours of beats without stopping for a second. if you run out of sequences, you can program new ones in realtime in different ways (I've o2xl). its annoying to have to stop the sequencer to edit some stuff, but you can most certainly make a lot more than a single beat without loading. yo must be doing something very wrong.

Sp404 sx uses SD cards, the sp404 uses cf and the 303 runs a smart media card. 303 is definitely more "lo-fi sounding.. (I believe it samples @ 13 bits and plays back at 16 bits. I may be mistaken with the asr10s converters though.) The 404/404sx are both 16 bit .wav format.


Sp404 bonus:you can eject the cf card from your sp404, insert it into the XL and load samples with no conversions/**** (if you rock a cf reader)

I've got 2 different live sets, here's the basic concept behind each:

A: Live sequencing & beatmaking
MPC2000XL 8 outs into ableton live which I then have effects like EQ, filters, delays etc that I can change on the fly with a midi controller (mpd32 in my case)

B: Live pads performance
MPD32 with ableton. Each pad maps to a different clip to give the effect of the MPC "one shot" sample.
So I bounce my beats down into different loops and components (eg drums and bass on a pad every 2 bars, then the samples I play live with it)
On top of this, I use the same effects rig from setup "A" using the sliders on the mpd.
