I did the research, listened to the machines, and made a choice because I am not into buying things over and over again....the conclusion:
If you need a machine that can do everything, (be your pro studio) and you do not have a multitrack recorder or a computer with a DAW, then get the MPC4000.
If you just want to cut up records and have fun on weekends then get the cheapest one you can of any model.
so you do have some studio gear and you want to add to it and you think maybe you will get serious in music then 4000, 2500, 1000, 5000, 3000.
Note:
4000 is big, heavy and easy to use.
2500 and 1000 are more portable than 4000 (With aftermarket OS can have features like a 4000)
3000 > 2000xl > 2000 > 60
60 is long in the tooth
5000 has a 3 osc synth in it, bugs in the OS, nice features.
After watching the tutorial dvd made by Sounds 4 Samplers and listening to the comparisons between what a 4000 can do in its stock form, against the other mpc's in stock form, you quickly realize that the 4000 is the best mpc product. Like I said earlier though if you buy the aftermarket OS then the others have similar features to the 4000. Before you get interested in the 5000 read up on the known bugs in that forum. I like the idea of the 5000.
A work around in case you don't want to buy the 4000 is to buy the Akai Z4 or Z8 sampler and simply use any of the other MPCs to control it. That way you get the ZONE editing, the synth, the 24bit 44.1, 48,96khz sampling, the portamento, the keygroup or drum programs. Z4's can be found for cheap it just does not have a sequencer.
The best to me in descending order MPC 4000, 3000, 5000, 2500, 1000.
cheers,
Ian
