Don't get preoccupied with what's the "best" because it doesn't exist. Just get the one that caters for your needs and make it the best for you.

I'm with Coz. I have a couple XL's and they have a slightly crunchier sound than the newer ones, but it's not something as distinct as the 60/300 or an SP1200 for example. You could make a case for the 4000 having the most overall versatility. But like Coz said you'd have to figure out how the different features fit what you wanna do.

Careful too, a lot of us get sprung and get more than one model. :)

id recommened startgin with a 2000 or 2kxl, their pretty much the cheapest and most basic.

if u want effects, like reverb, delay and so on go for a newer model 1000, 2500, 4000
you can get 1000's for cheap so check that out.

i use a roland mv8000 cause found one cheaper than a 2000.

if u relly want a 4000 the roland mv8000 might suit ur needs, it did for mee.

we can give advice but don't let us spend your hard-earned money.

Whatver you buy - try it out or at least read a few reviews (or in the case of older machines - user feedback).

And understand that there is no perfect machine - there are trade-offs. The older, better built machines don't have a clue what USB is and this is likely to affect your workflow in some way.

+++ so with all that in mind +++

In terms of sound and usability. MPC 3000 with Vailixi is hands-down the best MPC I've ever used.

I did the research, listened to the machines, and made a choice because I am not into buying things over and over again....the conclusion:

If you need a machine that can do everything, (be your pro studio) and you do not have a multitrack recorder or a computer with a DAW, then get the MPC4000.

If you just want to cut up records and have fun on weekends then get the cheapest one you can of any model.

so you do have some studio gear and you want to add to it and you think maybe you will get serious in music then 4000, 2500, 1000, 5000, 3000.

Note:
4000 is big, heavy and easy to use.
2500 and 1000 are more portable than 4000 (With aftermarket OS can have features like a 4000)
3000 > 2000xl > 2000 > 60
60 is long in the tooth
5000 has a 3 osc synth in it, bugs in the OS, nice features.

After watching the tutorial dvd made by Sounds 4 Samplers and listening to the comparisons between what a 4000 can do in its stock form, against the other mpc's in stock form, you quickly realize that the 4000 is the best mpc product. Like I said earlier though if you buy the aftermarket OS then the others have similar features to the 4000. Before you get interested in the 5000 read up on the known bugs in that forum. I like the idea of the 5000.
A work around in case you don't want to buy the 4000 is to buy the Akai Z4 or Z8 sampler and simply use any of the other MPCs to control it. That way you get the ZONE editing, the synth, the 24bit 44.1, 48,96khz sampling, the portamento, the keygroup or drum programs. Z4's can be found for cheap it just does not have a sequencer.

The best to me in descending order MPC 4000, 3000, 5000, 2500, 1000.

cheers,
Ian
