Well AKAI is under the impression that everybody uses software to compose music now. The selling point is that they're bringing the MPC workflow to your computer. It's a MPC 3k, 60, and 2000XL rolled up in one. You can use VSTs or color your sounds with outboard equipment if you want. You don't like making beats on computer???? Don't worry, you don't even have to look at the computer. You can make beats on the REN just as if its a standalone by using the onoard display and when you're done there's no grueling multitracking tasks.

The Ren's a good idea, we'll see how the idea materialized once it drops.

I wonder where they got the idea from.

You have already seen the feature set many times over. Obviously more details wlll be available when the Ren is released within the next few months. You will have to decide for yourself (no one is here selling the idea to you) if the Ren is something you need.

The Ren is just another great product in the most popular, highly regarded sampling drum machine line this world has ever seen. The same questions you ask about the Ren are the same ones users have asked for years:
1. Why upgrade from the MPC 60 to MPC 60II?
2. Why upgrade from the MPC 60II to MPC 3000?
3. Why upgrade from the MPC 2000 to 2000XL?
4. Why upgrade from the MPC 3000/2000XL to MPC 5000/4000/25000?

For me, the MPC Ren represents a changing of the guard. It gives me the MPC workflow without some of the limitations found in hardware MPCs. I won't be getting rid of my hardware MPCs. The Ren is poised to make me not want to open Logic for tracking if/when Akai adds audio tracks. MPC Ren = MPC DAW in my eyes...

The first hybrid sampling drum machine/computer software product that I am aware of is the MPC 4000 w/ Aksys. Maschine just took the 'concept' in a different direction. Akai followed suit and has the Ren taking that same direction. But in contrast to Maschine, the Ren is still doing things in an MPC environment that people are very familar with.

It is ok if the MPC Ren/Studio is not for you. Simply go back to what you were doing in Dec 2011.

And Your right for $1000. do guys really think that NI just came out of no where with this mpc/computer hybrid. The MPC community has been screaming for this for years. So they got the idea from us

Pre-ordered mine from Sweetwater two days ago. I appreciate the input JAH!!! Seems like a lot of people on here are hard as hell to please. Dont like it, dont use it. Claiming Akai stole the idea from NI Maschine is like saying Rod Stewart stole the idea of making his music available on cd from Mick jagger... I use Logic now, but miss my creativity when I was using my MPC lines. And No it isnt the same in my opinion, different workflows spark different results. The records that I placed produced on an MPC had a total different feel and genre than those I did in logic... Can't wait for the Ren!!!

LMAO! All they added was VST capability. Other than that, it does everything previous MPCs are capable of and really nothing much more, just in a computer environment. Nothing "one stop shop" or "jack of all trades" about it. Doesn't even have audio tracks like previous MPC's have.

Is that all they added?? You and JAH are hilarious. AKAI should post you all's picture o. The MPC REN box like the Cream of Wheat man. You all promote their products to no end.

This is def not a True MPC outside of the 16 pads.4k and 2.5k were the last of that breed.

WTF are you talkin about? Why you mad? And how am I "promoting" anything by saying it DOESN'T have all these magical features you seem to think it has? I stated a fact. And that fact has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to due with your or anyone's opinion of whether or not it's a "True MPC"! Don't be a **** prick because I corrected you on your misinformation! :?

And frankly, who gives a **** if it's a true MPC or not. **** a true MPC. Just set your 4-8 bar loop and make the damn beat!

I use the 4k and 2500.

You use damn near the MOST FEATURE PACKED MPC ever made, and are complaining about some "jack of all trades" bullshit with the Ren?! SMDH!

That's because the majority of people do now-a-days. If you owned a business, would you waste time, money, and resources creating a product for the MINORITY of people that will use your product, even though you have several products available already catering to these customer? Or will you create for the majority who have migrated to a market you haven't fully touched yet? This is not me promoting, this is simple economics, and simple common sense as well.

When I talk gear with people today and ask what they use, hardly anyone says they use an MPC. It's always Reason or FL or Logic, and more increasingly Maschine.

I have a different production sound on every piece of gear I own for some reason, but funny how they can all sample and do damn near the same things, lol.

You use damn near the MOST FEATURE PACKED MPC ever made, and are complaining about some "jack of all trades" **** with the Ren?! SMDH!

The 4k had two main purposes besides sequencing. To create the best most natural sounding drums, and the most prestine detailed instruments. The myriad of features it has are to serve this purpose. From the 16 bit(drums) to 24 bit(instruments) sampling. The grid view(drums) the piano roll view(instruments). Keygroups, bit crusher, massive storage, RAM, etc...it's all to serve two main purposes. All the other features are for sequencing. So yeah there's a lot of features, but the 4000 is far from a jack of all trades one stop shop machine. It aims to do a certain amount of tasks really well.

The 5000...man that thing is all over the place.... drum machine, synthesizer, HD recorder etc...This is wear my rant stems from. Because I saw a 5k overview after I watched this Ren's overview. Same product specialist did the overviews so I tied the two products together. Hopefully the Ren will get back to basics.

Back to basics for the Ren? Heck naw. We have plenty of hardware MPCs for the basics. The Ren needs hard disk recording/audio tracks. It doesn't need a synth as it supports plugins.

I am looking forwarding to all the potential improvements....

I can't disagree that the synth is unnecessary (at least for me), but it could prove useful for someone that just has an MPC and no sound module or computer with VST's. As for the audio tracks, I barely every used them in my 2500 since I have an actual DAW. But again, for a person that has no DAW or computer/software, this is a good way to lay down some sketch vocals, or if you're a DJ like me, you can use them to lay down cuts to your beat while the beat plays back. Or if you're a musician you can lay some live guitar or something. This eliminates the need to chop and sequence your live parts and allows them to sit exactly where you intended, as in exactly where you played them. Highly useful for people without a DAW.

I use the 2500 JJ OSXL AUdio Tracks when I use Logic as a sound module. Once I finish the beat, digitally direct record the Logic sounds straight into audio tracks in the 2500. It's Beauitiful.
