I want to record the multiple tracks on my MPC to multiple tracks on ableton at the same time.

I assume for this to be done I need to synchronize them together?

I have an MPC 2500 and a USB audio interface without a MIDI input..

So my questions are

1) Do I need to buy another interface with a MIDI input to do what I want to do? Can I just use 1/4" cables?

2) What DOES having something as a master and something as a slave really mean?

thanks

Click this link and it will help you understand the reasoning behind midi syncing.

Yo KP, what Lamp was asking was...WHAT MAKE & MODEL USB AUDIO INTERFACE are you using/working with?

No midi, so there will be no master or slave.
You can record 2 tracks max in ableton, you don't need midi to record audio.

Master is the sequencer that records midi performance and/or provides clock for the rest of the gear to run from.

real world example:
I have a keyboard and 4k.
My 4k is master.

They are midi'd together (not to computer).

My keyboard is not running it's own sequencer, my keyboards midi notes are recorded in my 4k's sequencer.

My 4k and keyboards audio are recorded to my computer daw through my interface, no midi sync to computer (same as you would do here) as I don't care to use a computer sequencer.

Cool, I understand that concept now.

So let's say I wanted to use all 8 of my assignable outputs on my MPC 2500, I'll need to buy a external MIDI interface (with 8 1/4" cable inputs)? Does that mean I have to get rid of my steinberg interface?

I changed the way you should have made that statement and question. And the answer to the question would be YES.

Like I stated before, check out that tweakheadz website so you'll know the difference between what audio is, and what midi is and what it does.

Now you can go for a multi I/O audio interface that has basic midi I/O. That way you're covered on the audio side, and you have the benefit of having basic midi in/out ports.

There are are thousands of midi interfaces out there, you really need to sit down and research what would be useful to your needs and setup etc. Yeah sure someone can recommend a interface to you, but it may not be to your budget, needs and requirements etc. I mean what the point of spending £200 pounds over your budget for features that you ain't going to use? I'm not trying to sound disrespectful or rude when I say this but you really need to help yourself by doing some research on midi and midi interfaces, this way your get a better understanding of what you really want.

If you're on a budget.....

But me personally, I look at a devices specs such as dynamic range & etc. for example, as well as features to make my decisions.

Once you know what it is you're looking for and what you want, the rest is gravy.
