My XLCD screen is completely installed (to include drilling a hole in the chasis for the contrast knob insall) and my 2500 re-assembled.....

I have some feedback for MPC Stuff for future improvements to the screen, if possible:
1. Use plastic that is not as easily scratched for the LCD housing. The housing of the original Akai LCD doesn't scratch as easily (I tried it for test purposes). I also recommend covering the entire LCD housing with a protective, removable film of plastic for those idiots like myself that will scratch it during install.

2. Design the LCD in such a way that the entire display is being utlized for the OS. There is approx 1/3" inch border of the LCD that isn't utilized.

3. Add F1 key labels to the LCD. The stock LCDs of legacy are labeled to matched corresponding F keys

4. The contrast pot can be easily pulled off if you are not careful. The XLCD manual suggests you place electrical tape around the contrast pot if you are not going to drill a hole to install it as suggested. This tape should be added at the factory.

5. Redesign the LCD so the contrast knobs is part of the LCD housing like the MPC 4000. This would elminiate any potential issues for #4 above.

Props to MPC Stuff for designing this new LCD and JJ for creating the OS for it. Awesome work!

JAH, all except for 3 has already been answered in previous posts. But the answer to almost all of them is pretty much the same. They've done lots of revisions we wont have seen before they got to something they were happy to show. When you're doing a production run of lets say 100 units, decisions need to be made based on need versus cost.
1. (page 2)
"Out of the mold, they will all be black for now.
3 options for the customers in regards to bezel colors (prices depend)
1. Its black...deal with it :) (Cheap)
2. Have our skin manufacturer (12inchskinz) make skins for them to match blue casings (or current color skins, ie white) (Mid Range )
3. Get some painted the same color as the MPC for those that want to spend a bit more cash but get the best overall look (More Expensive)The screen itself comes with a plastic cover for protection during installation."
gloss plastic is cheaper than matt plastic. And the screen part itself came with a protective cover during installation (page 32 mpctutors photo).

2. This happens will ALL lcds. It is down to the LCD not them. The majority of screens sit further back behind a plastic window so you do not notice, but take a look at a stock screen closely (again page 32) and you will see what I'm talking about. A quick glance around my studio and its the same on my waldorf blofeld and access virus.

3. an extra process that would add to the cost of manufacture, for something that ultimately is not needed. There is currently no silk screening, which should save a few $ per unit

4. I expect most people will find a place to mount it rather than leaving it dangle. and again, adding tape adds cost to manufacturing and it adds bulk to the cable for people who will mount it.

5. I cant find the post any more, but this was basically explained too. there is nowhere for the knob to sit on the new housing that doesnt look shit while still allowing tilting

MPC stuff, I was just wondering if this is a small workaround for the contrast knob for people who dont want to cut their casing. I dont remember the last time I changed a contrast setting on any of my devices, I just set it and leave it. Is it possible for an mpc owner to set the contrast on install and leave the knob somewhere inside the case? obviously you would have to tape it up to prevent short circuiting but for those not brave enough to cut their case it could be ideal. But I've not opened a 2500 so I wouldnt know if there is space.

Also have you any updates or more pics of the 1000 big screen yet? Are we still looking at Septemberish?

I didn't post any questions to be answered...just provided my feedback for improvements. I would have upgraded to the XLCD even if it cost me $300-$400.

i reckon the contrast potentiometer could be replaced with a resistor soldered directly between the contrast pins. you just need to find the right variable and account for change in contrast due to temperature, etc.

Yes, it's stereo - dual channel is a feature of JJOS 128XL.

But I do agree, it would be nice to have both channels on the free version as well. I'm going to see if JJ will consider it, I'll also get Mike on the case.
