Most often I'm always trying to mess around with synthesis and the bi-products of it. The whole thing is, if you have an image in your head and you're trying to put it on a canvas, you're not going to be able to get the whole spectrum included unless you do all the programming and know what's going on in your own tracks. Otherwise, you will have a great deal of trouble trying to figure out why something sounds like what. The reason I shy away from sampling myself is because too many people do not see it as the artform that it really is. Sampling in it's own right is art, but most will just tell you that you're stealing.
