it was stated earlier that minor notes have a different feel to them than that of ones on major scales. these things are true, any music theory class will tell you this.
since almost everyone here is strictly hip hop (or so i have observed) the sample is really a big part of a songs sequence and mood. therefore i have found that when looking for samples that need to provide an emotionally deep purpose usually samples that start higher pitched and end lower on a lower note tend to be darker, the inverse is also true for happy, sh!t music. **** this happiness stuff i want to slit my wrists and loathe my life.
now to the voices on a recording, usually a deep male, soulful, painstricken voice will work. for females i think that a long almost wordless wailing of a voice is the best (like bjork except obviously more soulful and meaty)
with basslines i see the best thing is deep and dirty with long tones and with much grit. i usually like more synth and electro basslines to accompany a otherwise semi organic mix, just gives it some seing in my opinion.
percussion and drums, more my specialty. i like to really widen the sound on all aspects of the drum mix. drum rolls are nice every 4 or 8 bars, don't what ever you do make a 2 bar loop! it sounds unemotional and unintelligent (not always a bad thing though, just does not belong in smart hop). use delay on crash cymbals but not too much, also make sure the cymals sit well in the mix (sometimes overpowering, to me). erratic high hats, open and closed. the biggest thing is vary the sequence of them and keep them under differing levels of complexity, ie fluctuate how intricate the patterns are, but don't overcook your listeners, no tandouri chicken, cool?
i think that the previously explained about covers, in my opinion how you should go about your creation. if you have any more questions ask others around here for their opinions.
ps- for really emotional music, get your dog hit by a car, get dumped by your girlfriend, disowned by family, etc. actually what i would suggest is listen to endroducing the whole way through to get in the mood... peace
