Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

So i just bought a 4k. I have all the upgrades (all new, not used) and everything hooked up. I tried sampling from the cd drive and it works on internal(analog) but not internal(digital).

I have used the spdif in to sample so i know the digital board works. I have tried changing the cable configuration on the back of cd drive. And yes i do have the jp1 pins 1-2 set to short.

I even tried seeing if there was anything coming out of the side of the cable going to the digital board with a meter(not while in the board). I saw no change in voltage. I did see voltage change in the analog cable(tried it for comparison).

Maybe the cd digital output is no good? If not what else could be wrong?

Also is it worth be removing all the boards to try and play around with this thing?
In other words, would i be missing anything special if i couldn't sample internal(digital)?
Do you guys use the cd drive for sampling a lot or once in a while?

Thanks.

So, your IB-4D board is definitely working.

Only things I can think of are:

- Your CD drive has a dud digital output or doesn't have one at all, and you've plugged the internal digital cable into some hole/other socket that was there? Is it the actual recommended Plextor CD Rom that's in it?

-Incorrect polarity on the internal digital cable - the black wire should go onto the pin on the side marked GND. You may have to loosen the drive mounting and slide it forward to get a good view of the back. I know these cable should only fit the correct way, but I recall that it isn't too hard to munge them in around the wrong way.

-Slave settings? Your hard drive working ok? Jumper set on the analog board (behind and slightly above the back of the CD Rom)?

I can answer the second part of your question...no you are not missing anything by not digitally sampling from a cd.
I have never sampled from a cd. As long as your digital in works you should be fine. Doesn't it sound good enough? That would be the determining factor.
I am going to try this and see if I have a problem tonight.
Cheers,
Ian

This is the original drive. I did order(exchange) a new ib4d board so i can make sure its not the board. I think its the cdrom most likely.

I made sure black was on gnd on cdrom side and on ib4d side it can only go in one way.

The setting is set to slave on cdrom and master on hard drive. The analog jumper is on SET.

This 4k has never been opened, and never had any upgrades.

Thanks for your help.

It those sound good enough. But i couldn't compare to digital cause it doesn't work, lmao.

So you don't sample from cd at all? That would make sense with todays media formats.

Now that i know i wouldn't be missing anything, i just want to make sure the ib4d board is good.

Thanks for your help.

Got a different spdif board install, and same results......no sound when set internal(digital). Either I am doing something wrong or the digital i/o from cd drive doesn't work.

Other than setting jp1 pins to 1-2, are there any other settings i maybe missing?

Thanks again.

Did that, no sound. Thanks.

You were right, it was the cable. Got a new one and it works.

Also if anyone wants to know. There is a difference in quality between internal(analog) and internal(digital). The digital is louder and clearer.

After reading your post more carefully I realized I misunderstood you. I have never sampled from the internal cd player. Only from digital sources connected to the digital input. My record player has a digital output.
Your query had me go try it and I realize that I can't do it also. I remember when I put my Digital i/o board in my MPC4000 and I kept wondering what the extra cable was for and never plugged it in to anything.
After reading some of the posts in this thread it seems you all are saying that the extra cable should go from the digital i/out board to the cdrom drive? If so, the cable on my digital i/o board is definitely not long enough to reach the cdrom drive.
Here is a video of the interiors or my Z4 and the MPC 4000. I took items out of one and put them into the other. You get a clear shot of the digital i/o and the wire. Go to 1:20.
I never looked in the manual or owned a manual that showed the proper procedure for connecting the wires. So you will hear my mistaken thoughts about what that wire is for. I was under the impression it was a similar wire to that in my yamaha A4000.

The green cable on the DIGITAL I/O connects directly to the ADAT board. There is another longer cable that connects to the CD Drive.

Since I still haven't put the boards up for sale on Ebay I snapped a photo of the boards. Notice the gray cable on the DIGITAL I/O next to ribbon connector, that gray cable connects to CD Drives with a DIGITAL input. The Green cable connects to the ADAT Board.

now that is what I am talking about....DETAILS!!!!

Thank you for posting that picture. Now I have to go find this grey digital cable as it was not on my circuit board.
You just did the World a great service with that picture. Someone in the future will read this string and be quite happy.
cheers,
Ian

Glad you got it sorted.

I agree with this.
