Who has synced the Ren with pro tools via mmc and controlled it with the transports? How do u feel about it?
By jigdagod Wed Feb 27, 2013 3:48 pm
I sync'd it last night just to see if it work how it say it does and it worked great. After setting it up I did have to exit the program once and go back in it for it to start working. I didn't notice any lag or anything, I didn't play around with it much either.

With the limited amount of virtual outs they gives us I don't think I'll be using th Ren as a plugin. I don't understand why they just stop at 16. I think it's just easier to export via .wav and then import into Pro Tools.

What benefits can you see that using it as a plugin offers?

Dope man. Yeah I mostly use it standalone, but if I need audio tracks, i'll use it as a plugin. Or if I want to do some kind of bussing/routing/grouping during the creative process that the MPC mixer can't do or can't do the way I want it to, i'll run it as a plugin. Now that the Ren can control the transports of Pro Tools, my workflow when using it as a plugin is much more inviting.

There's virtually no end result I couldn't achieve with the 2000xl that I achieve with the Ren. The biggest benefit is having so many more options during the programming and creative process. Being able to do so much before I had to move everything to Pro Tools. Being able combine the worlds of the MPC and Pro Tools into one seamless world, with no hangups...thats been a dream of mine for years.

I think I'll mess around with trying to combine the best of both worlds this weekend too and create a template. I think it does have it's benefits. Especially the audio tracks you mentioned.

Using Ren as a plugin...Pro Tools recognized the Rens play and stop transport buttons. No other transport functions work within Pro Tools. However, all transport functions work as normal on the Ren itself.

If you go into Rens edit, prefs, hardware and set Transport Controls to DAW..then Pro Tools also recognizes the Rens record button.

I don't know if this is by design or if I have setup something wrong.

That's by design, so you can record in PT with it, or into the MPC sequencer by selecting "plugin".I like that option.

Yeah. I definitely made a "MPC REN TEMPLATE" file for Pro Tools. So as soon as I open a session with that template, it automatically pulls up the MPC software as a plugin and I have aux tracks with inputs set to the MPC software already. This makes everything really easy and cuts out the tedious parts.

I feel you, no doubt. I bought the MV-8000 a few years back with the hopes of being able to integrate it in this way but it wasn't ready/ designed to work in this way. The MV was/ is still a beast though.

Yo MADBEATS, I'm bitin' your template idea

Although Logic has been my DAW of choice, I've always wanted to learn Pro Tools. I bought my Ren back in October and have been learning it but really wanted to integrate a "working" Ren with Pro Tools but after dropping $1,300 on the Ren, wifey woulda murda'd me for dropping another $700 for Pro Tools. Luckily, school sent me PT 10 and Logic 9 as part of the program and my PT class started 3 weeks before 1.3 dropped. Now I have a pretty good BASIC understanding of PT 10 and can now not only begin to integrate the stable Ren into my PT workflow but better understand what you guys are talking about when discussing PT/ Ren integration.

Thanks for the template idea btw 8)

I am pretty much a die hard logic user but.....

I have used pro tools a fair bit........

Each host is slightly different in the way it hosts virtual instrument plugins....

Is there anything about protools which makes it a better host than other DAW's
I know AKai is bundling it with protools now would be interested to hear whats different about the integration.
I.e. whats special about the pro tools integration over Logic?

Far from being an expert on either DAW. my experience thus far is that PT is more finicky than Logic. To me, the Logic workflow is faster but again, I've just begun to learn PT, while I've been using Logic for 4 years. PT has the dubious distinction of being "The Industry Standard DAW" and this I believe, is why most people gravitate toward PT vs Logic, even tho Logic IMO, is more user friendly. Looking forward to learning PT tho. The larger your arsenal, the better prepared you are for battle.

I just recently dove into Logic....and I've been using Pro Tools professionally since 2004.

As of right now, I can't really say a concrete and functional advantage that PT has over Logic in regards to using it with the Ren. It's just about how you as a producer want to use your software really. I have a 003 control surface and PT 10, so i love using it with PT because I can mix on the Ren's hardware and the 003's hardware. It's just the way I'm set up at the moment. I honestly don't see myself changing this set anytime soon though. It's working out great for me.

One thing I loved about using it as a plugin in Logic was the "Bounce In Place" function.

How do you like the 003? Have you tried any iPad control surfaces? I was thinking of getting a 003 or the MCU, but those iPad control surfaces look dope too. The V-Control Pro is the one I'm looking at getting. I have a Frontier Design Alpha Track and it's nice, but I would like to control more than one channel at a time.

This is something I don't understand as well. They make all these amazing features and workflow enhancements, and they gimp it with shit like only 16 outs. To add to that, only 2 of these 16 outs can output Vintage Mode! It's like, what's the point of such great DAW integration? Who the hell wants to **** resample and rechop everything for every beat just to be able to track or export with VM applied to all stems/outs?! I don't know if they are limiting the software on purpose to force you to mix within the MPC software or if there is some other technical limitation causing them the put these restrictions in the software! But it's annoying!

I have. That works great too, and its just a matter of assigning the controls to functions in Logic's preferences.
