The Ren costs 7x more than an MPD. To suggest Akai didn't add capabilities to the Ren because it would negatively impact MPD sales makes zero sense. Increased Ren sales would give them more profit not less.

As far as the original topic, I am unable to get the Ren and Live to work where the Ren's pads can record into Live. I've contacted developers to see if this is a bug or if I am doing something wrong.

What I find is as soon as you insert the MPC VST in Live, an 'MPC' MIDI import port becomes available. In Pro Tools this port is allows you to use the Ren's pads to record into any Pro Tools' track that has the 'MPC' port set as its MIDI Input. In Live, I can' get this 'MPC' port to work although it is available.

So if I am doing everything right, this looks like a bug as it works perfectly in Pro Tools.

yep it doesn't work this isn't really a big deal for me as i like to run it standalone
then midi map with ableton but i can see why people would like this to work
maybe there's a max for live utility or some midi routing software, interesting that it works in pro-tools but not a surprise

i can see conspiracy theorists coming......"Akai trying to increase Pro Tools sales...."

This actually works for me you got to choose the mpc setting twice its underneath I select inputs on view so you can see exactly whats being routed the only thing that doesnt work/limited is pads to midi or midi notes

So it works for you? What is exactly working for you?

Oh...then you can send MIDI from the MPC Pads to Live.

1. Insert MPC VST on a Live Track

2. Inside the MPC VST, create a MIDI Track

3. Select a MIDI or Instrument Track in Live

4. Set the Live MIDI or Instrument Track as MIDI From MPC. The ensure MPC is selected again in the box below it.

5. Then strike your MPC pads and you will see the MIDI Instrument and Live track responding to MIDI.

6. Arm Live to record

7. Strike the MPC Ren's Pads and you will see note data recorded into Live

Is this what you have been trying to accomplish?

that is exactly what i want to work.
everything on the rens control surface should be made mappable as you would
be able to do in standalone
i'm not really to fussed as i favor standalone but i can understand how helpful this maybe to live users so they can have total functionality of the ren as controller and plugin within live.

Are you talking about Exporting a MIDI pattern recorded with the Ren's pads (via drag-n-drop or otherwise) to Live?

When some writes Pads to MIDI....to me that sounds like they want the Ren's Pads to trigger MIDI in Live. But this is obviously not what chopchop wants.

In this video, I am using the MPC Ren's pads like an MPD to record into Ableton Live. I have Battery 4 on a Track within Live.

If this is not what you are trying to do, can you post a video showing the functionality you desire?
By Danny Mon Apr 22, 2013 11:44 am
thanks for video Jah, that may have been what someone wanted but i was on about
using the whole of the rens control surface, pads qlinks etc to make it mappable with abletons midi mapping while using the ren as a vst in ableton

so like you done there in your video but select a new midi track on the ren and you
could map a pad to an audio clip in ableton or a qlink to control a pan for example
(which you can do in standalone with the ren software open and ableton open at the same time, i have 2 screens the ren in one and ableton in the other make life easier.)

so your getting the maximum dual functionality from the vst version of the ren.
i think that is what some of us are getting at with regards to replacing mpd and other
controllers.

like i said i'm not totally fussed about it but i can see the potential if they could possibly get it working in such away.

battery 4 looking pretty sweet :-D

no its cool wires crossed ill show you what i mean

so you load up a pgm with your samples or what you just chopped as thats what i want to combine the ren sample chop and manipulation but be able to seq it inside my daw

even the feature you show which is also needed at tho moment is not really the one for work flow and ease of use meaning you should just be able to select it from teh midi list at that point if you just want to control something having to load up the mpc on a separate track kind of silly and adds unnecessary steps to doing something so simple hence controller mode

but this is what i meant

@Danny and chopchop,

I am taking down detailed notes, recording videos, and playing around with all these 'fun toys' in an effort to find a workflow that you can use currently and write feature requests for future improvements.
