I can't image a specific situation where audio tracks can cause confusion. You can?

If audio tracks causes confuses someone....this individual(s) should probably not be using the Ren in the first place.

But let me fall back as this is a stupid debate and you can't stop what is inevitable.

The way I look at it.. coming from a jjos1 user

The Ren should ateast cover jjos1, pretty much on all fronts!
the Ren should use jjos1 as a template for the os, not to be greedy but to atleast take as many features 60% of recent mp-users are on point with.

Until Ren has these simple features, it should not even continue on vst's etc...
From ping pong looping to audio tracks!

Although keeping audio tracks simple, but with atleast the grid edit style fade in fade out mode that's already there..

IMO jjos1 had it fairly right. Simple but not overcomplicated!

I think you get the point of my post for me not continue...

However I do agree with labcoats and the point he made!

Cheers,
Padlock

I wasn't laughing about what you said and I didn't understand why Akai implemented the mixer in this way :) I 100% Agree with you, that's not how daws are designed !

I see. Its the internet, cannot read your mind - yet...

comtox wrote:This will piss you off, but It's a 20 years Old design... Tracks mixer should be 100% sequences independent. No matter how it was designed on a MPC60 or even on a MPC5000... this design comes from another age.

Again, before thinking about audiotracks, AKAI should bring a real mixer with 10 post/pre Inserts, 10 post/pre sends, FX tracks, group tracks, busses, and at least with preset manager. And virtually an infinite numbers of outputs then the REN/studio could be ready for audiotracks.

Regarding your enthusiasm for the REN mixer... With all the respect you deserve, I start to think you really never mixed something in a DAW...

JAH wrote:Akai has a plan for the Ren

They had plans at the beginning to with the plugin duplication

Be honest, please. It's a freestyle development plan :-p

Well said.
It is indeed from another age. A 25+ year old direct copy of the MPC 60 basic midi mixer. Back then it might have been a nice little feature for a basic midi volume change here and there. But I suspect even then it was little used because everyone was using an analog mixer.

If the Ren is to become some kind of pseudo Daw then Akai must implement a universal mixer mode completely disconnected from sequences.

'Pseudo DAW'? What the heck is that?

The question for me would be would I track vocals in it if it had it????

The answer would be how would it handle takes and comping of takes etc. etc. all that is part of a vocal session for me.

If it can't do it as well as Logic or Protools then i wouldn't be that interested. Thats a pretty significant benchmark right there.

Its a good long term goal but in the short term there is a backlog of stuff I really want on the seq first i.e. Note length quantise, automation, proper channel strip preset browser etc. etc.

I can cut my vocals in logic no problem. Its a real pain adjusting every freaking notes length to the grid on the mpc on a crucial part in a dance tune!!! That can't be done once I have hit all tracks to stems , so I have no choice but to do it note by note. :Sigh:

So I am with Lab give me the MPC basics first. Make it better than the other DAWs at something. For me I would like that to be sequencing.

I just spent all the day working in a track with the ren in plug in mode inside pro tools and I must say I'm impressed! Finally!

In the last couple of months I used the ren just standalone trying to grasp a decent workflow around the bugs, oddities and limitations and I have to say I got something...but I wasn't satisfied, even if I dropped with it like 20 good tracks ( I still have to mix them).

So yesterday I started using it as plug in for the first time inside of logic.

I was pissed as hell, even I could not bounce stuff in place as usual as with all plug-ins, I couldn't send midi data from the ren seq to Logic plugs and the general workflow was sot so great ( due to au plugs limitations).

So decide to give a try to my old frien Ableton (still using it from version 5) but I got the 64 version installed so due to laziness I opened pro tools 10 (which I started using when I was an audio engineer back in the day).

Right now I feel to recommend to people this combo, much better than Logic and even than the standalone version, you overdue ,much of the negative side within pro tools.

I have to try out with live but I doubt it will be better.

Within pro tools you can send midi data from the ren midi tracks to plugs inside PT, you can track out you percussion and sound from the ren, you can play multi timbral Ryan's instruments, you can record midi on the fly from the ren and PT rats, and when you did the bones of the song you can record the audio from the aux tracks.

I'm enjoying the ren within a virus ti2 in multi timbral mode inside the PT 10, and finally this seems the workflow I was searching for.

Some stuff have to be ironed out, but the way seems the good one!

With this workflow even you don't need audio tracks or plug in hosting inside the ren, I think at this point they should at least develop a light app for working just as a plug in inside real workstations.

It's obvious that some of you don't use the Ren with hardware. The Ren has 4 MIDI outs for hardware but now way to track the hardware as audio. Sampling is not a great work around. When Akai adds audio tracks, I'll be able to record my synths into the Ren...pseudo DAW or otherwise.

You miss understood.Im saying thet akai could get confused trying to implement a simple extra stereo track(s)!!!!!(i dont know why) A daw it does not need to be,but an all in one recording and sample workstation is the minimum for a computer software at this price point.

Why would they get confused when the last hardware MPC released had hard disk audio tracks?

They way it should work is simple. The Ren has MPC Drum, MPC Keygroup, MIDI, and Plugin Track Types. These all show up in the Track Mixer colored coded. Akai would 'simply' have to add Audio as a 5th Track Type and give the channel strip it's own color.

I would probably keep it simple by allowing users to record 1 or 2 tracks at a time like the MPC 5000. But since Labcoats will call it pseudo, they should implement a way to arm as many tracks as a user wants to record at the same time.

Why??i dont know :? But they have a lot of work to do before it gets accepted even as a full sampler/sequencer it would seem.So....... if its so easy, yes,DO IT......

I hear you/others....but many of these comments make zero sense.
Too much 'demand' is placed on this product especially when there are no products on the market which match the descriptions of everyone's personal vision on what the Ren should or shouldn't be.

'Long way to go'? No DAW and generic controller gives you what the Ren provides right out the box....not even Maschine. If there was such a product, everybody would be using it and not wasting time here.
