You guys are confusing wavetable synthesis with multi samples. The fantom can layer, but it loops small waves. They are static samples. The kronos has some multi samples. Computers are another story, gigs of multi samples.

This forum is pretentious, theres a few of you old members who talk out your ****. Yes im talking about you ock (by the way, wrong spelling) In other words your fakin the funk.

MPC-Tutor has the true definition already...

Dusty if you disagreed with single cycle you should of left that in the other thread. This thread is about 4k multis and usage not about looping a single cycle wave sample or a piano multisamples aka sample.

Hi All,
So I am working through various scenarios with Multis so that I can try to explain a few things in the video and I need help thinking two things through.
1) How do I get Qlink 1 thru Qlink 6 to be part volume controls for the first 6 tracks in the MIX-> PART screen?

Or is it the case that the MPC4000 does not have a track mix in this way? DO I always have to use the arrow keys to select the parts and thus Q link 5 will always be volume control?

2) Is there a MULTI mix screen other than the list of MULTIS that you see when you press the MULTI button? IN other words a view on the MPC4000 for MULTIS that looks like a multitrack recorder similar to the look on the part/pad mixer page.

Or is it that to mix with MULTI's you set everything up and then scroll up and down through the MULTI screen with the cursor buttons while the machine is in PLAY.

Cheers,
Ian

If this is hard to comprehend then I will first make a vid of this and you tell me how to work around it. I am laughing at myself because there still is so much to learn with this machine.

For the first question set the qlink 1 through six as

Part

Amplitude

Real

Range -100 to 0

And I think you should be set for each part. I'm not in front of my 4k now but off the top of my head. And you can use ext 1 - 8 in program matrix to control more programs.

Use

All

Ext 1

Real

-100 to 0

Go to the program set to all.

Matrix settings

Source>ext 1 and Destination>Amplitude. Depth>100+

Only the programs assigned will be affected and you can assign as many programs to the same controller with different depths or opposite directions.

Just a recap to make sure that I have this right. I've been working on this for a few days now and I am almost done. Video coming soon on.

So, the advantage/ reason for MULTIS...
1) there is no multiple track mixer for volume and such that is convenient.
2) MULTIS allow for programs to have different setting for FX, Pan, midi, output and if you are using Aksys you have an easy visual for fader grouping among other things.

Why number 1 is important...if you, like me, were simply using one multi for a song and thus using many tracks, in many sequences you would only be able to use the mute and solo functions, or automated pad volume changes(actually never tried this, it just occurred to me)

Warning...
A thing to consider is how one plans to track out drums. If you use a drum program and have your drums routed to individual outs then you could have overlapping sounds on the same outputs if you have MULTI parts going to individual outputs.

(Which makes me realize the importance of having the Z4 also...now I can have only drums on one machine's 8 outputs and the other be for the other machine's MULTIS output.)

Modulation Matrix
So MULTI Parts and the Mod Matrix are the real force majeure when used in combination. At first I was thinking only about using the Mod matrix as a way to create synth sounds with a sample trimmed down.
What I gather you all were trying to get at is that the Mod Matrix used in tandem with Parts (Programs:- the same program can be assigned over and over again to a different part) can allow you to for example use your Qlinks as the Source and have different destinations in each MULTI part.

Due to the modulation patching (specifically the amount of sources) you can do things like have the LFO -> Pitch, Modwheel-> LFO 1 Depth, & have each Qlink turn a zones volume up or down. (now I see why this thing is brilliant)

I have to remember that in all of this the Song, Sequence and Tracks run independent of the switching between MULTI parts. Thus once the sequence is playing you can (in Aksys: faders) raise and lower levels.

Conclusion I have a question....
Are you MPC4000 users organizing your Programs in a highly organized manner? Example "Program 909 Drums", "Program Moog synth"
or are you making programs on the fly with many different samples and putting specific sounds on specific pads in each program? example: in all of your Programs a Kick is in the bottom left pad of Pad Bank A, and synths are in Bank B.

Cheers,
Ian

PS if I have this right let me know. Too bad the manual didn't start off with a paragraph like this. I think I forgot to talk about the different Parts in the Tracks and how this will affect things. Let me think about this some more while I do my day job.

Well in the mixer page you have part mixer and pad mixer for drum programs. The key group programs only have the part mixer in the mixer page. But in the Zone page you can assign that particular note or range to a particular output. Multis shows a huge collections of outputs if you are using I believe the dat outputs along with the analog outputs.

I arrange a program as an instrument or kit. A drum kit program, a bass program, a pad program and etc. Each one assign to it`s own midi track or sometimes layered with two or more programs on the same midi track. The audio is easy to route just to the output when I`m tracking or use mute the track with the midi data.

On the other hand when I go old school like in my 2xl sampling days. I have a chopped kick on pad 1, low kick on 2, snare on 3, clap on 4, layer percussion on 5, and loops on the rest with one shots, stabs and the whole nine in one program across many banks.

It just depends.

Gotcha Haze. I think I am ready to make the video and not give out any false info.

So to correct what I stated earlier... its not that there isn't a track mixer, the Multis novelty comes in to play when assigning various Programs to the same midi channel for layering.

cool

Ian

Part one of this video is almost done. In the editing phase. This is a basics video, because I keep wanting to get deeper but not sure about the time.

Question?

In the TRACK block on the main screen you have options:
Out 1 Part 1-128 - Program
Out 2

Out 1 Midi A thru D - Devices
Out 2

Out 1 INT A & B - 1 thru 16 & any
Out 2

Who uses INT A & INT B mainly instead of just using Parts 1 thru 128? What are the advantages of using this instead of Parts, especially since you can route the Parts to the MIDI channels in the MULTI -> MIX screen?

Seems to be one of those things that if it were a snake it would bite me. I am close but my mind is all over the place with the various functions. Using "ANY" I know allows the incoming MIDI signal to just simply route to the same channel on the MIDI out.

Do you use INT?

Cheers,
Ian

Yes for keygroup programs and layer drum kits sometimes, but mostly key groups programs like synths, pianos, pads you name it. Just as we talked before you can use it to layer instruments like combi in Triton, Combinations in Reasons, or racks in ableton to create a uber synth or instrument. This way you don`t need to copy the midi file to several midi tracks to layer. You will use one track. Plus with the instruments layer this way you can use tilt velocity, keyspan, and the such to have say the bass program fro co to b1, two layer synths over c2 to b4, and bells and strings layered from c5 to b7.

Think of it as MainStage from Logic.
