LED LCD display kit for Akai S900 and S950 sampler + photos

Just installed in my S900 - works a charm and looks fantastic, cheers Matt

Very easy to install, took me around 20 minutes in total.

Here's some pics - did these in a hurry, so reflections are a bit of a pain. Will try to take some betters ones...

dopeness... now i just need to fix my s900's audio issues and add one of these new screens to it as well... how much for shipping to south america?

Saw one of these backlights in person tonight, and just to confirm, they are absolutely dope! Best displays I've seen on any sampler. The pictures don't do them full justice, get your name down for one, now.

Folks, here's the newest colour of the bunch. This is an impressive display - the photos make it appear slightly blue but it isn't - it's black text on white.

This display can be viewed from even the most extreme of viewing angles

It's kinda like the original display, on steroids, on crack, and on stilts. With a turbo

I recieved my package yesterday,

very easy had it up and running in no time. (color in the photo is very different)

I have a question I will ask here in case it helps anyone else: What is the best thing to do with this part?:

Ideally I was hoping the leads would pop off of the sockets, but it was somewhat difficult, I didn't want to force it. As I have it now, I zip tied the other lead to prevent it from shorting, is that what is supposed to happen?

Hey man, I'm glad to hear you had no problems with the fitting...

The part you showed, yes I should explain more about that. That is the inverter circuit, (it is exactly the same in the S900 and S950) and was used to power the backlight of the old display. When you unplugged the original connector at P401, you cut all power to this circuit. So there are 2 things you can do with it:

1. Leave the inverter where it is. And tie up the cable that used to connect to the right hand side of the display, as Harmonicj did above - because the cables will not detach from the inverter, they are fixed to the board. Cable / zip ties are included in the kit for this purpose. Because although the circuit and the cables are not powered now, you don't want a loose cable moving around inside the sampler and causing a short circuit. There are a bunch of other cables running behind the display area - you could tie the cable to those, or tie it to one of the metal brackets that run between the front of the chassis and the circuit board.

I'll include a piece of heatshrink tubing in future kits, you can use this to seal / insulate the ends of that cable.

2. Remove the inverter circuit altogether. There are just 2 screws holding the circuit in place. Remove them and you can lift out the whole circuit. Keep that circuit, the old display, and the total of 5 screws (3 from old display, 2 from inverter) somewhere safe in case you want to go back to the old display in future

Matt, I'll be getting my new display when I feel a bit flush, add some value to the old girl (S950 with 2.25MB & Atari HD).

PS. If anyone in UK has a S950 floppy drive (Edit: for one of my MPC60's) going spare please drop me a PM, do not post here.

You've done such a great job with these displays, we're all spoilt for choice regarding colours. But it's a nice dilemma to have.

There are a few other colours that I haven't tried yet. You can never tell exactly how they will look until you try them. Here are some of the other colours that are available:

- black text on yellow/green (a bit uninspiring maybe?)
- black on bright green
- black on blue (like the original, maybe?)
- black on red
- black on violet
- blue on black
- violet on black
- olive green on black

If anyone would really like to see one of those colours, let me know and i'll try to include it in the next order.
