The MPC Studio had a price drop of almost €150,- , making it cheaper than the MPC500, an older, and feature wise an inferior machine.
Also the Rens price dropped €100,- last month, costing €799,- atm.

Dutch prices in dollars:

MPC Ren: $1081,-
MPC Studio: $457,-

I was shopping around for maybe another MPC 500 (buy and sell them every few years when I need one) to be mobile, but might end up with the Studio.

The 500 was never priced correctly in the first place., neither was the 1k.
I was lucky when they first came out and were suffering from that polyphony nonsense dude sold me his for $89.
He thought it was broken because it couldn't play patterns correctly.

Akai made the polyphony problem better and it became a useful tool, not a bad little unit except for those 12 pads. :(

The 500 should be considered a product that was discontinued at the same time the 5k was for all practical purposes.

High tech **** huh.

If this was to my response I was talking about back when Akai was a hardware company the prices were wrong.

The 500, 1k, 2500 and off course the 5k all had price points that were wrong.
Had Akai corrected that they would have been much better off.

Thing is, people are willing to pay more for a MPC 500 then for a MPC Studio.

I bought my MPC 500 for €699,- 7 years ago, and it took 6 years for the price to drop to the €399,- it is today. That's a price drop of 43%.

The MPC Studio's price dropped 29,5% in just one year.

That tells me that the Akai probably isn't selling that many units as they hoped despite their marketing campaign. That it's maybe too well known among the customers that the Studio still doesn't do what it should do, or that it's simply not appealing enough for the costumers.

If the Ren/ Studio would do what it should do I already would have bought one. I keep reading on those things, still waiting until they have solved most of the bugs and implemented some of the basic features like step edit. So instead I'm considering to maybe buy a Studio because of it's low price.

I was actually joking and not in response to anyone.

Yet.

That's it in a nutshell. Neither the Ren or Studio are selling, hence the price drop. The Maschine Studio probably plays a small part, but in general it all boils down to sales or lack thereof.

What will people do when there are no new MPCs to talk about?

I think it's more that Akai put a lot of front loaded factors in their equation.
Think about it, they had to get programmers, license algorithms from companies.
They purchased a plug in company, purchased a hardware company, paid for some ghetto marketing plus had to actually built the product.

They had no choice but to overprice the Ren and Studio which may or may not have affected sales negatively.
With the price of the original Maschine it's no way Akai should have had the list or street price they used.
Even though it comes with hardware it is still a software product which gives it bad depreciation compared to typical MPCs so it never had the same perpsective of MPCs in the new or used market.

The big reason I stated that the last hardware units were also incorrectly priced is this.
A new 500 was more than a used 1k with new pads
A new 1k was more than a used 2500
A new 2500 was more than a used 5k
A new 5k was more than 2 used 4ks

Akai just never seemed to get that their unit of the past are pretty much their biggest competition.

Too often we have all seen, or said, "Why should I pay so much to get that new one when this one does what I need it to..."

Price it right and people with the old one will be more likely to get the new one, even in keeping the old one. In many cases people have to dump the old one to get the upgrade.
