Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By Scinx Thu Dec 09, 2004 3:40 pm
is it possible to copy a pattern played on, say, pad 1, and tell it to play that same pattern on pad 2 (with the ability to use a different sound)
for example, when layering kicks, is the only way to do that by hitting the pads live or is there a precise way to copy the pattern over?

you can have a pad make another 2 go off when you hit it... go to your program screen and hit the pad u want as the main pad then choose multi and scroll to find another pad that you want the first to set off... you can also make a pad stop another pad from playin which is useful if you do alot of choppin...

JG, that's not what Scinx asked but it's good advice for someone who wants to know how to make a pad mute another pad.

Scinx, Use EDIT pg 69 XL manual to copy your pad to a different track.
On that new copied track use pg 117 XL manual to "select SND" on the pad you want to change and scroll through your sounds and choose the new sounds you want. You can do this while your MPC is playing.

Thanks to both!

when i mean go off i mean more like activate it... so u hit one pad and the other pad will play whatever sound it has also simultaneously...

Understood, I was thinking of mute pad, but you are right with the SIMULTaneous function.

Scinx, this is what JG is talking about:
pg 119 xl manual. Right JG?

yeah. thanks for the help. ive known of the mute feature for a while...but ive been trying to copy patterns to different pads for a while now..going to try these out when I get home...

Lamp - seems like the pages you referred to would copy the sound froma track to another track (and not the command to another pad).
Say I have a snare on pad 1 that hits on every 1/4, but on the chorus, I want a hat to hit on every 1/4, I want to be able to copy the pattern (hitting every quarter) from Pad 1 to Pad 2 so that it can do the same. This is obviously a dumbed down example so I dont have to write a book.

Page 69 - Editing Screen - shows how to take certain notes from a sequence, and give it a new track. However, I cant change the sound of the pad without effecting the first sequences material. I want to say, take the Pad 1 command of hitting every quarter, and move that command (but not the sound) to pad 2, so that I can go into the PRGM screen and give pad 2 a different sound. Possible?

As for Jorge - that does help as far as layering a filtered kick over itself..so thanks for that bit

Copy that snare track to a different track.
Shift 6, while tapping the second snare pad and
highlight, rotate dial and change the SND on
that second snare pad to the other instrument
you want it to be. Once you record with a pad
LEAVE it where it is. Now you should have the SAME
patterning as snare 1 but on a different track with a
different instrument.

I really appreciate your help. From the way I read that, and the reason Im not seeing how to do this, I would say
Track 1: Snare sound from Pad 1 (Pattern A) becomes copied to
Track 2: Snare sound from Pad 1...and thus, if I change Pad 2, Track 2 is still looking at what Pad 1 is...ShiftF6 would allow me to change pad 1, but then Track 1 will be different too.

I understand copying tracks, and copying sounds, and assigning sounds to pads...

So if I could tell Track 2 which pad to play from, that would solve my woes. I think this is what you are trying to instruct me on...

Am I missing something small in your explanation that is tripping me up? Most likely...hmmm

U missed out the tap the Pad part during record....Then assign the sound to the pad u were just tapping

That is quite a limited way...Especially if its 16 bars long and contains velocity edits and all sorts. Had this been midi, then problem would have been solved some time ago.

The only way around it that I can think of at the moment would be to use a different program (Drum2)

What are u trying to do exactly exactly - Not the example version...The real version.

In my first post, I was basically asking if there is a way to copy patterns (without recording it live). I wasnt asking a basic question as to assigning sounds to pads, or copying tracks to other tracks - although I appreciate the help.

Exactly what Im trying to do is - sometimes I will mistakenly assign a sample to a pad in the A bank (say pad 1) when I meant to put it into the B bank (pad 17)...since A is already recorded with a snare, the new sample now sounds (in place of the snare). Numerous times, Ive liked these "mistakes" and wanted to have the snare and the sample play at the same time (or alternate one for a couple bars and then the other for a couple bars)...but the only way to do this, was by recording a new track and manually hitting the pad. For sequences where the bars are long and complex, it can be quite time consuming to get it absolutely perfect.

Now, for jorge's suggestion, that would work, except, because you are assigning the simultaneous to the pad, the 2 samples will always play together regardless of sequence. His tip only works if you want simultaneous sounds throughout every sequence.

And thus, to get back to my main question, is it possible to copy the pattern recorded to a particular pad, and assign that pattern to another pad, whereby another sample can be played.

From a technological standpoint, I do not see why not, because the machine has a set of instructions for the Sound assigned to Pad X to play in a particular pattern...and thus, I would imagine, (perhaps with a BIOS update that will never come, or a method which I am seeking to uncover) you could tell it to assign that pattern to Pad Y.

Does that make it any clearer?

1st things first....The pad and the pattern are two different things

The pad is the sound source & the pattern is the instruction...You can copy patterns all day long but you have to remeber what the instruction and the sound assigned to it go hand in hand (MPC sequencer - Theres no drag drop function round here son - lol)....

Within the same program, Im not sure about being able to do what you want at a push of a button. You'l have to do your overdubs in step edit (for accuracy) and use the erase key to clean up -(Well thats how I would do it

Like I said, with a midi device, or using a another program (or even use of program changes) this is done quite easy (Actually, thats how I would do it)

Try and concentrate on what your doing from the beginning and maybe you wont make these mistakes - lol

Anyone else??????????

The pad is different from the pattern? Oh no kidding...perhaps that is why I used both words instead of the same word twice. Being told how to switch sounds on pads was not my interest. I was wondering how to copy patterns from pad to pad (and then switch the sound assigned to that pad)

You say the pattern is the instruction, then you say that you can copy patterns...but you have to remember that the instruction and sound goes hand in hand...this makes no sense....
The pattern is indeed the instruction, and to the machine, it is just 0s and 1s. So why not the function to copy those 0s and 1s to another pad? Who knows. No one was asking about drag and drop...just a simple question (by your argument, one couldnt "drag & drop track 1 to track 2 cause its a sequencer and doesnt drag and drop"). Wasnt looking for snide remarks...a low post count doesnt mean I havent figured out how to turn the damn thing on..Just like your post count doesnt mean you have learned to comprehend a question and reply with useful information...

My question didnt concern a lack of attention as to what I am doing. I dont need to concentrate on my sessions anymore than you need to concentrate on the questions posed on this forum.

I think the answer to my actual question is, no, it cannot be done, unless anyone else thinks it can be. I am not thinking of committing suicide over this issue, I will continue doing what I have been doing. Just was looking if someone did know that it existed.

Thanks again Lampdog and Jorge...thanks for the effort
