Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By fabianellis Tue Dec 03, 2013 9:28 am
First time trying midi....I ran my stereo out(s) from the mpc 2000xl into my audio in(s) of my roland fantom-s and I can't hear my meth-clock but when I plug the headphones into the mpc I can hear the clock but not the sounds and also the keys are playing different sounds than the mpc pads...what am I doing wrong?

Have you loaded any samples into the MPC to play from the MPC pads?

Are you hearing samples, from the MPC, through the Fantom-S input?

Have you set the INPUT SETTING parameters for the Fantom-S correctly?...
Input Select - LINE IN L/R
Mix-In - ON
External Output Assign - DRY
External Output Level - 127

Have you turned up the EXT SOURCE LEVEL knob, just below a level that lights the PEAK indicator when sounds are playing into the Fantom-S?

Thank you I corrected the parameters so now I have the sounds from the keyboard and the clock working together but its not allowing me to use the keyboard as a slave......I want to use the MPC as the master and the keyboard as the slave so I can use the keys and make drum patterns with the MPC....I have the mpc set at MTC frame rate at 25 and the MMC is on and synced out and the keyboard is sync mode slave-midi and the mmc mode is slave

Yes, two different problems, wanted you to sort out audio input to the Fantom first, as the MIDI part is a little more involved.

Forget MTC, MMC, and Master/Slave, at the moment, they are used to synchronise the sequencers of two devices, which is not really what you want, at the moment, I think.

You connect the MIDI out of the Fantom to the MIDI in of the MPC, and a MIDI out of the MPC to the MIDI in of the Fantom.

You turn Local MIDI to Off on the Fantom...
- press MENU, select System, press ENTER
- press Function Button 3 to select System Setup
- change the Local Switch to OFF
- press 8 System Write to save the settings to internal memory

Local Switch

The Local Switch determines whether the internal sound generator is disconnected (OFF) from the controller section (keyboard, Pad, pitch bend/modulation lever, knobs, buttons, D Beam controller, pedal, and so on); or not disconnected (ON).

Normally this is left “ON,” but if you wish to use the Fantom-S’s keyboard and controllers to control only external sound modules, set it to “OFF.”

Value: OFF, ON

This disconnects the internal MIDI connection between the keyboard and sound engine inside the Fantom.

Now when you play the Fantom keyboard, it sends MIDI note on/off data to the Fantom MIDI output only, instead of sending the MIDI internally within the Fantom and playing Fantom sounds, and the internal Fantom sound engine will only respond to MIDI data coming into the Fantom MIDI in port, instead of from the Fantom keyboard.

So, the Fantom is now both an external MIDI keyboard for the MPC, and an external MIDI sound module for the MPC.

You then setup the Fantom in Performance Mode, with a different Patch (sound) on each of the 16 Performance parts, and with each of the 16 Performance parts assigned to a different MIDI channel (from 1-16).

Then, when you want to play a Fantom sound from the MPC, you set the active track in the MPC to MIDI, and to the MIDI out port that the Fantom is connected to, and to the particular MIDI channel that matches the Fantom Performance part/channel of the particular Fantom sound that you want to play from that MPC track.

Then, both the MPC pads and the Fantom keyboard should be playing the particular Fantom sound on that MIDI channel/part of the Fantom Performance.

Have you set the MPC track to the same MIDI output port that is connected to the Fantom, and to MIDI channel 1 (for example, to get it going)?

On the MPC Main screen, have you set the active MPC track from DRUM to MIDI, and the MIDI output port/channel from OFF to 1A (if the MPC MIDI out port A is connected to the Fantom MIDI in port)?

Have you setup the Fantom Performance mode so that there is a Fantom Patch that you want to play on Part 1 and MIDI channel 1 of the Fantom Performance?

If you have, then please detail exactly what outputs are connected to what inputs.

Also, if you temporarily turn Local MIDI to ON again, just to make sure that the Fantom sound engine is generating sound from MIDI notes coming from the Fantom keyboard, does it play Fantom sounds?

Turn Local MIDI to OFF again, after testing that you are getting sound out of it still.

I have the fantom on part 1 midi....the mpc on trk 1 s:midi 1a device. ...the connects are A midi out from mpc into the in of the fantom and the midi 1 in of mpc into the out of fantom....the sync in of mpc is off and the sync out is mode mtc frame 25 mmc on

And if you set Local MIDI to ON again, do you get sound out of the Fantom?

Or if you change the Fantom from Performance Mode to Patch Mode, do you get sound out of the Fantom?

You can also open a MIDI monitor window in the MPC, to see if it looks like there is MIDI being input and output from the MPC on MIDI channel 1.

Move the cursor on the MPC Main screen to the MIDI/DRUM field, press the Open Window button, then press the F2 button for MONITR.

This will open the MIDI Input Monitor window, which should display MIDI reception, and which channel the MIDI is coming in on.

Make sure that the MPC is showing MIDI coming in from the Fantom in that window.

Also, you can check the MIDI Output Monitor window, to see if it looks like MIDI is being sent back out of the MPC to the Fantom. Same as above, but press Open Window from the MIDI Channel/Port field on the Main screen instead.

OK, so the Fantom sound engine is playing sounds when it recieves MIDI note on/off messages directly/internally from the Fantom keyboard.

Now you have to make sure your MIDI cabling is correct, and your MPC active MIDI track settings are correct.

Double check that Fantom MIDI Out is connected to MPC MIDI In 1, that MPC MIDI Out A is connected to Fantom MIDI In, and that your MPC active track is set to S:MIDI:1A.

Turn local MIDI to OFF again, and test for sound playback with MIDI through the MPC in both Performance and Patch Modes.

Let us know what is happening in the MIDI Input and Output Monitor screens when you are testing it.

If that is all correct, I am running out of ideas, maybe someone else can see something I have missed.

Ok I can hear the clock when I change the headphones between both units.....now the sync modes in the mpc should be set at what...because currently just the sync out is at mtc frame 25 mmc on.....the sync in is completely off

Forget sync settings, you are not using sync at all. Turn sync in and out to off.

You are sending MIDI note on/off (and controller) data between the two devices, not sync.

You need to make sounds come out of the Fantom, when Local MIDI is OFF, by sending MIDI note on/off messages from the Fantom keyboard into an active MPC sequencer MIDI track, and the MPC then sends those MIDI note on/off messages back out to the Fantom sound engine, which plays the sounds.

You are breaking the internal MIDI connection between the Fantom keyboard and Fantom sound engine, and inserting the MPC sequencer between them.

This lets you record your Fantom keyboard playing into the MPC sequencer, for playback of sounds from the internal MPC sample engine, or an external MIDI sound module, and in conjunction with the Fantom Performance Mode, it lets you use up to 16 different Fantom sounds on different MPC sequencer tracks/MIDI channels.

Are you seeing MIDI input and output activity, in the MPC MIDI Input and Output Monitor screens, when you press keys on the Fantom?

Ok im going to play with it a little and see what I can come up with....I will probably be hitting you up again some time today......thanks a lot
