Is an RGB LED really any different to a Red/Green/Orange LED, if that is what it currently uses?
Unless, I suppose, it currently uses a bi-colour Red/Green LED with orange obtained via a different voltage/current on the Red LED component?
Their hype has certainly got us all flustered, will know for sure in 2 weeks.
Sure, an RGB is more expensive than a RGO or a simple bi-colored one. For whatever reason Blue is more expensive to make and there are varying qualities of RGB as well. I've been part of helping build a BOM for a product before and you look for various ways to cut costs a few cents here and there. Not sure why we haven't seen any other colors yet. Orange can be created from Yellow and Red, so it could be a Yellow Red Green LED. This is all just speculation of course. I think it would be really cool if it was an RGB.
Also RGB allows you to make just about any color, vs. a limited set with other combinations. In additive color (which an LED is) RGB are the Primary colors which allow you to make secondary colors and so on. You can technically get about 200,000 colors from an RGB.
