Ah, the boom bap sound. A sound like creaking rotten wood floors and an antique dusty record player in the corner playing Bernard Purdie solos. All illuminated with just a 5 watt lightbulb swinging from an extension cord over an MPC sampling through a 1960's tube amp.

You can't do that without clipping in a digital interface and is another reason why I go to vinyl for my samples.

Is there a limit to how loud I should be recording? I also re-sample my samples to 12-bit. I go through that process but I kinda just go in without knowing what I'm doing though. Can someone explain to me what hertz are?

Hertz means Cycles per second.
I guess you are talking about Samplerate, yes?
44.1kHz is CD quality.

anything lower than that will sound progressively darker and eventually will sound a bit crusty.
Older samplers often sample at lower rates. 30kHz and 15kHz being quite common.

44.1kHz refers to the amount of samples per second in an analog signal. The information is actually 44,100 little pieces per second of information, more than twice the maximum frequency that can be heard by humans.

Normally though when talking about Hertz and cycles per second we are referring to the number of times a string vibrates per second. a string going from center, up, down, and back to center has completed one cycle of vibration. if it cycles 440 times per second, or 440 Hertz, it produces an A. a string that vibrates at 220 Hertz is an octave below middle A, and a string vibrating at 880 Hertz is an octave above middle A. putting those numbers in perspective, 44,100 is a lot of cycles, so fast that we can't hear it, and that's why audio recorded at that frequency sounds seamless even though it isn't.

A lot of people will say it's all about breaks, but i don't agree with that. For that boom bap sound, it can be really useful to layer your sampled kicks with 808 or 909 kicks or any other drum machine. And some of the best boom bap drums can come from other sources as well: for example DJ Premier got some of his best drums from e-mu modules, with just a little bit of Eq, compression... added

44.1kHz is one of the standard digital audio sample rates. It refers to the number of samples per second in a digital signal, NOT in an analogue signal. Analogue signals do not contain digital samples, there is no 44.1kHz sample rate in an analogue signal.

Tapes do not run at a certain number of "frames per second", they run at a certain number of inches per second (ips). The SMPTE linear timecode protocol (LTC), and the SMPTE vertical interval time code protocol (VITC) in video tape machines, used for syncing tape machines with other devices, run at a certain number of frames per second.

Do some learning, this is basic audio fundamentals type shit. :Sigh:

i meant to say digital not analog; pretty simple correction to make. The reason i mention tape is because early digital audio was recorded to analog video tape and ran at frames per second equivalent to a maximum of 44.1 khz

You're reaching now, you seemed to be talking about frames per second in relation to tapes in general, that is different to the digital audio being recorded onto video tape in early Sony PCM-1600 and related PCM recorders and adapters, which is not very common at all.

Why does anyone have to use this sort of knowledge for performing/touring?

There are many other reasons, within the industry, or as a hobby, to learn this stuff, besides having to prove anything to randoms on the internet by performing and touring professionally.

For example, a studio tech or engineer might have a much greater knowledge of the technical side of audio and music equipment than many performers, and just because they do not perform and tour, that does not lessen or negate their level of knowledge.
