Hi everyone,

I've lost half of the afternoon trying to do a data wheel mod. So here is a topic to make yall lose your time as well :)

Joke aside and to make a long story short, I was about to throw an old cassette deck and thought that its double knob might fit inside the MPC.

Here are the results :

The first one was really unusable because of its height and it was too slick. The second one was not so bad but only usable in a limited range. Due to its small smize spinning is almost impossible. TAP TEMPO button for larger increments almost impossible to press at the same time. If there was a kind of data wheel like this, clickable for larger increments it would be perfect.

If someone want more details or pictures of the different steps I can post them. Anyway we all know that the encoder is the weak point. Any hope one day to get a dope data wheel like these in the AKAI DPS series?

I can't say that I'm unhappy with the stock one but thinking about mods is a good way to persuade me that the 1K is not already dead :)

Both knobs look awful, but at least you tried. :WTF:

Haha yeah they are awful indeed but it was fun just starting from a big knob and see what could happen :)

So here are the main ingredients of failure :

Your mod looks cool 8) So if you eliminate the wobble like this, can you hear the data wheel rub against plastidip? If yes, does it make it a bit slower?

Here is a short video of the DPS16 data wheel I always mention. This is my favorite among the AKAI products I own. We don't need the shuttle function, just the stability and the smoothness of the jog :)

When my was about to die, I just filled the gap between metal frame and jog wheel with foam type tape (undernieth the frame, around the hole) It stopped wobble but it was a little too late to save the encoder. I even got spare one for exchange, but I found myself not using it at all. Instead I use q-link 1, and +/- from other controller (not physically on 1000).

wobble is gone because of the foam tape, and the plastidip makes it so your finger has good grip on the wheel... it doesnt rub anything. i dont put plastidip on the bottom of the wheel where it makes contact with the wax surface of the foam tape. that area is smooth plastic and is very slippery.

My bad. I mixed up Plastidip and tape. Anyway thanks for the information.

Very good news for mpc2k5 users :)

Waiting for the first feedback from buyers.
Two remarks though. It's a pity there's not a close-up on the data wheel.
I hope the encoder and the wheels will be available for purchase without the whole board.
