I want to combine 2 drum samples together to make a better kick drum sound but can't figure out how to do it exactly the way that I want it. I have one kick that has a nice attack and another that has a nice tail, I want the first sample to sound and then a few milliseconds later I want the other sample to sound, I haven't found a way to delay the second sample. I know there's alot of guys out there that do alot of sample stacking, would you explain your techniques?

Like what roots has displayed, i use adsr . but to have each sample using adsr you have to use pad simult so each sample has it's own asdr setting..

I also use pitch to adjust the phase of each sample until they sing together..... You could also use a lp filter on the tail sounding kick as well if you want the original kicks charater to come out more...

There is no sample start delay/offset parameter in MPC Software, to delay/offset one sample against the other layered samples, unfortunately.

Hopefully they add it at some stage.

Maybe you could add the required milliseconds of silence to the beginning of the sample itself, though that is not very flexible?

Line up both samples to play at the same time.

AD on first sample and SR on the second.
Make it where the attack from the first sample is prominent.
Make it where the sustain from the second sample is prominent.
Sort of a crossfade/bowtie between the 2 depending on how sharp you make your
adsr settings.

I've done this while layering on ASR and 2kxl in the past.

Or better yet....
Resample your tail kik.

Two ways
1 just resample the tail kik but start recording like a half second early. Then edit chop what ever excess space that you don need. You can then stack on same pad. Or just leave on other to be triggered by first.

2 re sample tail kik. But set up main kik to be muted when tail kik is hit. Now resample both by actually recreating what your wanting it to sound like. Then just mute the first part of this new sample leaving the space needed.

Of course you will need to adjust your mute group in program to not mute tail kik.

Hope that's understandable. The resample thing in the ren/studio is a great tool. Didn't have this on my 2kxl.

Understanding ADSR is a really good place to start.

I would request this to the developers or JJ. In trim put two samples. 1 start 2 end. then with QLinks like this man would adjust and fit your samples, forward or backward.

Adsr and layer 2 samples is non destructive. (you can try different settings and/or parameters without physically editing the original wav file)

Resampling is destructive. (change settings, chop, to taste, print to permanent wav file, physically creating a wav file.

As long as you understand that, move forward and bang out! :-D

Both are good options and can get you where you wanna go, different routes, same end.

2kxl didn't have full adsr but still, you get what I'm saying though.

That's a very interesting approach, I will give it a try.

yes sir, and great point. The thing i don't get about the emphasis of destructive audio. is the actual sample in sample folders never gets touched. as long as beginners understand this. the clearer the picture. If you want to sample a song from your iTunes and you speed it up and chop it in half, the song remains untouched in your iTunes library. the song was copied to your RAM, then destroyed. and what is left is saved in your project folder. so yes like Lamp said "physically creating a wav file" and this of course uses up data on hard drives. Ill need to try the ADSR route cause I'm ignorant to that kind of use for it. cause I'm confused at how he would achieve what he wants by the adsr. adjusting these parameters would only change the fades of an already existing sample.

How would or could an ADSR add the needed "TIME" to the beginning of a sample so it actually started the sound later as wanted? My understanding that this ADSR would only fade in or out the beginning or end of said sample.

another easy nondestructive way would be to assign the samples to trigger together from different pads. Then click on the "tail' pad. this would highlight all tail sounds on track. turn off your "Timing Correction" and just slide sounds to desired spot. slightly after the first kik. this route you will loose this effect on a kik that is on last beat, last bar.
ill try the ADSR now.
