I've never seen the span represented as MIDI note numbers, but mapping out keygroups in the 4K is like having teeth pulled anyway! It's appreciably easier through AKsys if you can get it working, but even then, it's not like skipping through the park whistling your favourite tune. It's all a bit clunky.
I'll take a screen picture next time it happens, but yes, I get the impression it's some kind of glitch, although very handy when you're dealing with samples with the MIDI note number in their name.
TBH making keygroups on the 4000 is not that bad, it's the best option for me whenever I want something that will work across multiple samplers, it's much quicker than making keygroups on any of the other MPCs, for example the way the MPC4000 remembers the last sample assigned (a godsend when working with zones) - but even mundane stuff like setting root notes on hundreds of samples is much quicker in the 4000 (it's hell on the 5000). As long as it's not too complex the resulting AKP loads well into the 5000, Ren and Maschine, with only minor tweaking required.
