yea - thanks debauch for clarifying. re-reading that, i understand your confusion.
i was saying, if you JUST get the 8-outs, but you still only have a mixer going into one stereo input for your computer, you still have to do the mute/unmute/rewind/re-record dance to get your isolated tracks into the computer. this is great for folks that that's all they have, but damn i bet its boring and tedious. and you can't even freestyle much that way, you have to prepare your whole beat in advance, and personally i dont get that either.

the first thing you need to really understand/live/breathe, is you are NEVER doing it wrong. this is all 100% subject to your own approval. some people use floppies. some people use laptops. some people use tape. it is entirely up to the beatmaker what 'works'. even if i tell you something is going to suck and doesn't make sense to me, that is just my opinion and my insight into how i work - whatever someone chooses to do - thats great, and i applaud individual thinking a lot more than i do trying to get the collective-internet's opinion on how it SHOULD be.
so no, your way sounds totally fine - majority of people would tell you they want individual tracks so they can do exactly what you are proposing. my point is - there is always a very legitimate alternative apart from what the masses tell you.
yer beats are good man - i think the 8-outs into yer mixer will add another level of fun for you to play with for a while. then, if you still want to go cheap and oldschool, spend $50 on a rack multi-effect and run the mixer sends to it - now you've got delay / whatever on whatever track you want. then, if you find you really still want to mix/add fx in the computer, look into an 8-input soundcard. flipside is to ditch the mixer, get an 8-input soundcard, and do it all in the box.
