Jay Cord wrote:The way I track out currently is by muting tracks and recording individual tracks to my daw (garageband Logic Pro x next week.) track 1 usually being the kicks, track 2 snares etc...

8 outs give you 8 tracks to record at a time. You can also use your main outs as LEFT mono and RIGHT mono. IF your sample is in FACT a mono sample. If your sample is definitely stereo the MPC will ONLY allow you to choose 1/2, 3/4, etc.. Stereo outs can be thought of as 9/10 but you won't actually SEE 9/10 in any menu.

yea - thanks debauch for clarifying. re-reading that, i understand your confusion.
i was saying, if you JUST get the 8-outs, but you still only have a mixer going into one stereo input for your computer, you still have to do the mute/unmute/rewind/re-record dance to get your isolated tracks into the computer. this is great for folks that that's all they have, but damn i bet its boring and tedious. and you can't even freestyle much that way, you have to prepare your whole beat in advance, and personally i dont get that either.

Jay Cord wrote:well, my plan is to tweek and add fx on certain drums or snares etc.. should I approach it differently? Am I doing all wrong? Thanks again for all of your time Tapedeck!

the first thing you need to really understand/live/breathe, is you are NEVER doing it wrong. this is all 100% subject to your own approval. some people use floppies. some people use laptops. some people use tape. it is entirely up to the beatmaker what 'works'. even if i tell you something is going to suck and doesn't make sense to me, that is just my opinion and my insight into how i work - whatever someone chooses to do - thats great, and i applaud individual thinking a lot more than i do trying to get the collective-internet's opinion on how it SHOULD be.
so no, your way sounds totally fine - majority of people would tell you they want individual tracks so they can do exactly what you are proposing. my point is - there is always a very legitimate alternative apart from what the masses tell you.

yer beats are good man - i think the 8-outs into yer mixer will add another level of fun for you to play with for a while. then, if you still want to go cheap and oldschool, spend $50 on a rack multi-effect and run the mixer sends to it - now you've got delay / whatever on whatever track you want. then, if you find you really still want to mix/add fx in the computer, look into an 8-input soundcard. flipside is to ditch the mixer, get an 8-input soundcard, and do it all in the box.

Some mixers can allow you to breakout channels into computer. They are mixer/interface devices in one.

Here's one.

lamp is right - mixers that support multi-channel into the computer are starting to pop up. for a while, most of the 'usb mixers' just allowed the stereo bus to be transmitted. now they are finally starting to allow all channels/busses independently. i would love something like that. didn't know about that tascam - thanks.

This one is still widely available, the Tascam is discontinued.

The 16x2 built-in FireWire interface on the Mackie Onyx 1220i will simultaneously deliver all 12 channels, all auxes and the master L/R signal straight to your favorite DAW with zero routing. Ok fellas, Now I am more confused!!! I just came from guitar center and spoke to an "audio expert" and I left the place feeling more confused. He said that I can't record 8 separate tracks in one take on my daw. I thought this was possible? That I don't need 8 out expansion if I will just record it all separately. I feel like such a moron because I thought that my idea of tracking out was possible. (hit record and have it all recorded separately in individual tracks) All the usual suspects here( Tapedeck, Lampdog, mr-debauch, Wal Martian) thank you for all of your time, I swear if it wasn't for you guys i'd be feeling in vain about beat making. You guys are truly dope people.

I've got the 1220i and think it's a nice alternative to a regular interface. I'm a bit concerned that I might end up with a mixer shaped brick with the way FireWire is going though. :WTF:

straight up - that guy is either actively fooling you, or a total idiot.

consider his position:
- he works at a retailer selling NEW gear - he has no reason to be versed in what old gear is capable of, not to mention he can't know everything about every piece of gear that has ever been
- he still needs to sell NEW shit. so hes going to say whatever he can to make that happen. 'no you cant do that with that old thing, you need this new thing'. guitar center is walmart of music gear - do you go to walmart and expect to talk to an expert?

all your answers are in this thread - there is no need to be confused.

I have a 2kxl with 8 out board, I already know what you should do.
Also have a 4k with adat out, I already know what you should do and I know the options. All of us in this thread know, don't worry, we got you!

If he was an "expert" he would have taken the time to tell you everything we just did, lol.

8out is possible when you have 8 out board in mpc, those 8 cables go to (example) the Mackie I pictured above
and the Mackie is firewired to computer. DONE, you have your 8 outs separately into daw.

8out is possible when you have 8 out board in mpc, those 8 cables go to an audio interface that does the exact same thing as the Mackie mixers above, able to output multi channels into computer. DONE, you have your 8 outs separately into daw.

He should have told you that.

I've been hated on inside Guitar Center many times cause I prove people wrong. Just looking around at what's new and they come at me trying to "tell me stuff" so I put fools to the test, confuse the hell outta their grey matter, lol.

I knew all along the MPC crew couldn't have been wrong!! this reply alone starts to make sense. I am looking now at the mackie but alesis is much cheaper option for me. I am a mild introverted person and try to avoid people as much as possible (thank goodness for the power of the internet!!!) but he must of thought I was an idiot because when I replied with, "are you sure? I really think that it's possible" he had this "you don't know shit" smirk on his face. I felt rather irritated but feeling a little better now because I can now take a step forward.

that is how that place works - it drives me so **** crazy. so many guys fight tooth-and-nail to get a job there. then they think they have been validated and know more than the customer. then the amount of clueless customers that do come in further validates this superiority complex they have. i have been ridiculed in there before too for returning a BROKEN mixer they sold me. they acted like i just wasn't on their level - because they had no idea why that thing was broken. it can be a really toxic atmosphere.

820i was mid $200's wasn't it?

That Alesis outputs to computer 2 channels via usb. That defeats the purpose of your
needs. Continue what you've been doing, save more, get what you REALLY want later.
Buy once with confidence instead of do over after do over.
