I did not mean to start an argument. The Creatures’ video was only an example to show that music can be made in many ways, including just drums and vocals. Whether anyone likes it or not is irrelevant and arguing over whether or not said music is good or not is a matter of personal taste.
One of my favorite professors said, “music is wanted - or desired - sound.” In that sense, one could consider ANYTHING that appeals to one’s hearing as music. Speech (spoken word, regardless of dialect, language or colloquialisms), natural sounds (as in nature or ambient civilization), noise (see previous) and your personal preferences for listening enjoyment are ALL music, providing one deems them as such.
I, for example, don’t care for the music of Kanye West that I’ve heard. Nor do I care for most (if any) prog rock. However, I found out just last night from my son who is a prog rock musician and fan, that West sampled King Crimson’s “21st Century Schidzoid Man” in one of his songs. That’s actually something I’d like to hear, just to see (hear) how it works (or doesn’t). Maybe I’ll like it and maybe I won’t. That doesn’t mean that it’s not music to many others.
I always think to myself, whenever I hear something I think is awful, “Every song is somebody’s favorite song.” It just doesn’t appeal to me.
