Right what is first important to me is super storage ability.
Next is great drives along with top notch enclosures that can give me speeds from 6Gbps to 40Gbps. My Eastwest instruments are huge plus lm getting Spit fire instruments and when l am using them they need to come up off those drives hot!
I've handled my sh*t a little bit more hood than that. I would never pay that much for an enclosure, What I've done with certain enclosures that I felt ran a little hot was just took the lid off it and drilled a bunch of holes to let air go through. It ended up resulting in a 10 celcius drop. The problem with a lot of enclosures is that they end up looking prettier than keeping the drive cool.
I don't know what software you'd have to run on the mac to monitor this but on my pc's I use "Hard Disk Sentinel" where it shows the temperatures of my drives at all times. If the temperature starts getting out of hand, it'll start flashing yellow and it also warns me if anything fishy ends up happening with the drive, like a bunch of abrupt read or write errors, etc.
The biggest issue plaguing these larger hard drives for years is the APM / advanced power management settings. So for example, a lot of drives would be set to turn themselves off after a few minutes of being idle, which will also explain why you may get a minor delay for a few seconds when the drive starts up again. That click sound you hear when it does that is the read/write arm on it restarting which ends up wearing down the drive platters over time. So what we end up having to do is use different boot disks, etc, to hard set/override the default set APM settings in the firmware to either disable it all together (so the drive is always on 24/7) or set the idle timeout to something much higher than a few minutes.
Many of these drives are only rated between 300,000 to 500,000 (for higher end enterprise drives) for Load / Unload cycles, so if your hard drive is doing that 2000 times a day, you can see how fast a drive wears down and also important to keep the drives running in a cool and non humid environment. Laptop drive load cycles climb a lot faster in part due to a protection mechanism, because if the drive is on and spinning 24/7 and you drop the laptop, the drive will likely be dead or the data will be ruined vs if it was idle / not spinning when the thing is dropped, you're not as likely to lose data.
