I dunno, to me the MPC is in a weird place, and I'm not sure where they should take it.
As a controller its overpriced and limiting compared to other existing gear.
As a standalone, the hardware is set, and there is only so much (feature wise) they can truly "add-on" to existing.
Real money is in ecosystems, and most likely these aren't the last MPCs.
So, if "I" was in their current shoes, I might do something along the same lines, build towards the next set of equipment, there is only so much more they are going to get out of standalone mode, and I'm sure they've data-mined not only their DAW, but general use of folks who have purchased their equipment - and seen a trend that equates to Ableton.
I haven't seen ANYONE actually big up the MPC DAW, and I'm NOT unique in exporting to another DAW to do any heavy lifting, I was only using the MPC software for handling stand-alone mode. So while - yes - they should strive to improve the MPC DAW, there is more value for the *general* public in integration with other DAWs (and I'm sure Ableton has several reasons for being chosen, including popularity and Akai's experience with the DAW).
I dunno, I get the frustration from some users, but if I was in their shoes, I'd do something pretty similar...hell is it that different from Reason, who just made the new version of their DAW pretty much a massive set of VST a la Komplete?
With that said, I STILL would want Akai to team up with say iZotope to build some kind of high quality mixing and mastering tools/algorithms/assistance - into the next MPC to reduce DAW dependency further. But but playing nice with others is a strong start.

Akai doesn’t even have the eco system setup correctly. Unless you buy extended service you can’t go in and redownload expansions you purchased years ago.
If the expansions or air stuff is on sale, you aren’t notified on the main page.
I’m really surprised they didn’t bake Xpand 2 into the software when they saw how popular hybrid was when they did it.
One thing the NI does right is the eco system. Everything is available in one place and in one click.
