I use a MOTU MIDI Express XT. Works as a standalone interface too for when I'm not on the computer. Live, keyboard controller & synths for a small band vibe. I do it less the more comfortable I get with Studio One, but I sketch with this set up.

Im not sure if the timing is any better, but when using the Network sync, the MPC is running with Logic as the master so its as tight as Logic can be. Ive read that the MPC is pretty bad at being the master, but seems to run all my gear fine, but Im not really doing much tempo locked stuff. My Waldorfs and my Lexicon sync with it, but my sampler cant, and neither can my Boss SE's. Arps and LFOs in the synths seems fine, and the Lexicon delays are always in time so seems ok to me.

Yes, the learning curve is extremely high. Our work flow makes sense to us, but in order to optimize it. It should make sense to others. I've been in other people project studios and it was like working an archaeological site.

I've worked with a group who had 40 keyboards (No exaggeration) however they routed every keyboard to Two Mixer and they never synced the gear. If they wanted a particular keyboard, they would play it live and record into their Software DAW.

From the outside, their system looks convoluted, but it was dead simple. On a the keyboard they had numbers written like this. 1 / M1 / C1-2 / T S1: Which meant Keyboard 1, MIXER 1, CH 1&2, DAW TRACK STEREO 1. Once you learned that you could figure out their setup. Also on their Software DAW, their template the inputs was the labeled: with number and name of the keyboard.

I've found that in most project studios, one person is wear all these hats.

Musician
Tech Engineer (Repair)
Mix Engineer
Mastering Engineer
Recording Engineer
Librarian/Archivist
Producer
Cleaning Crew

So things can get unorganized and become unproductive really fast. I've been there

Yeah, it seems to run mine ok as well, but I'm not doing much either that would reveal small timing issues.

I'm almost complete with a transition from Logic to Studio One, neither of which can be slaved. Maybe it's not the worst thing considering other's experience with the Live.

Hello,

I really tried to make a connection between my MPC Live and my Windows computer but fails partially.

I assigned a fixed IP to the MPC thanks to the wifi MAC address. Once I enable the wifi connection from the MPC, the Akai Network instantly shows the unit. So far so good. Everything's fine with a wifi connection. I can use the MIDI remote port with Ableton or Reaper.

The problem is that I would like to benefit of a very-low latency and, above all, of a stable connection to play live without any wifi. In other words, I want a working wired connection. Since it does not work directly with a the official USB cable, I bought an adapter USB female -> RJ45 (something like that: https://www.amazon.fr/SIENOC-Ethernet-A ... 070&sr=8-6).

After having disabled the wifi of the MPC, I plugged the cable between the MPC and my computer (in the RJ45 port) but the MPC touchscreen shows "Status: Disconnected". I guess I have to do it manually. So I typed "ipconfig" in Windows Powershell to know IP address, subnet mask and default gateway of the computer. I typed all theses information in the manual address method available on the MPC, but nothing happens. I launched the Akai Network panel and it shows "Not available on network". Same thing if I plugged the cable into the router instead of the computer.

I don't know what to do :WTF: What kind of adapter do you use? Do you have a mac or a PC? Is it possible to plug the cable directly into the computer or do we have to connect it to the router?

Last question: I'm wondering how to know the MAC address of the ethernet card of the MPC (I know the MAC address of the wifi card but not the ethernet one). That way, I could map a fixed IP for the wired connection and maybe the problem would be solved.

Thanks for reading,

Any help would be appreciated :worthy:

The last time I used Logic it could master and slave from MTC.

Really? Everything and everyone I've come across says no. Where in Logic would I set it receive MTC? The sync settings all seem to be what's sent out from Logic. I only see destination settings.

Maybe moot as I'm trying to get comfortable with Studio One. But someone here said I should be able to get S1 to slave to MMC. I must be missing something. I'll revisit this tonight.

I no longer have a MAC or LOGIC. But here is the info.

Sync with MTC

When you need to sync Logic to video or to another digital audio workstations like Pro Tools, use MTC. You can also send MTC from Logic to separate destinations. Set the destination, select the MTC checkbox for the destination, then open MIDI sync preferences and make your adjustments.

Thanks!

And a quick looks says Studio One does not sync to MTC.

Ill have to look into that, but Im pretty sure Logic can only be its own clock but Ill have to check that out. I think I would still want it to be, since thats where Im doing my mix downs for now. If we had more options available for the tracks in the MPC id just be recording everything in there just spitting out an exported mix like I did with the software hehe. The 8 stereo tracks thing is nice but ultimately sucks. If I could switch those to 16 mono instead Id be set!

Is your adapter class compliant and doesn't need a driver? The IP isn't the problem, it doesn't even need to be on your LAN, it sounds like you bought an adapter that just doesn't work with it. My Mac is on my home network and the MPC works just fine connected directly to one of its ethernet ports with a private 169.254 address. Just let it assign its own address, as long as your computer isn't blocking it, it should show up just fine whether its directly connected or plugged into your router just like it does when you use wifi.

Hello Monotremata,

Thanks for your message. My adapter is class-compliant (the description says "plug-and-play" but it's the same thing). I also tried to go to the Device Manager (from the Windows 10 preferences) but nothing shows that a new material is detected on the computer.

So I guess my adapter is bad and I have to buy a new one. Or maybe an USB-3 type B to RJ45 adapter? Like this one (packaged with others): https://www.amazon.fr/Dadaptateurs-AFUN ... rch&sr=8-9

What do you think about that?

I'm also wondering if a USB-3 type B male -> RJ45 male cable does exist? It would may me more reliable but I didn't find anything over the internet.

For the users who succedded to make a wired-connection with their MPC Live and their computer, can you send me a link to your adapter model, please?

It drives me crazy :hmmm:

Have a nice day

:-D you saying that made my head spin 360 degrees! I will never go that route again. Ima keep my crap ITB! It feels good a person can sit at my desk and go straight in without asking a 1,000 questions. I love my simple setup

CharlesRandolph wrote:
I have nothing against his setup. I used to work like that. That's why I know managing a large MIDI network is counter productive for me. From Cabling, Routing, Swapping Out Gear, Back up sound setting, Dealing with Bulk Dumps. Returning gear because of the way they've implement MIDI, Project Archiving, Project Recall, Constant Trouble Shooting, Constantly re patching, Multi passes causing the user to recheck the sync and realign inside the computer.

Not to mention having a larger enough mixer and audio interface, with enough inputs and outputs, etc. I've been there 1000%. When it work well it's a beautiful thing. But when it doesn't, it's a living hell. If you throw in deadline, changes, other things, it can driver a person looney. Also I still run a Hybrid setup, however I just removed 90% of the head ache. At some point, we stop working the gear, and it starts to work us.

Let's not forget collaborating in your space. If you ever want to see, how well oiled your setup is. Get someone else in there and try to explain your setup.
