Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

as someone said on uk.music.guitar yesterday following a stupid but fairly innocent post that created an absolutely massive thread and general shitstorm ...

Warning! DON'T FEED THE TROLLS!

the MPC4000 is not a solid machine. The way it cuts out sound while playing reminds me of that game on Playstion1 "Music".

sounds like a personal problem to me. mine works quite well, and if it's cutting off your one shots maybe you should learn how to set them?

you reccon?

iam setting them right. i guess mines just faulty.

strange, what kinda cut out sound?

i add a long reverb effect to a snare. it plays it ok at first but when it starts looping, the reverb cuts out like theres no 2moro.

ive tried both real-time recording and just recording each snare sepratly. it does the same still.

ive done this over many different sessions. it does the same sh!t.

maybee its coz of my 16mb ram. maybee it cant handle all that reverb. i ont kno man. apart from that and crashing the 1 time it did, i luv the machine.

I don't think it's the amount of RAM to be honest. Can you post the Multi/Program/Samples/Seq that you are using? Maybe we can see if the same thing
happens on ours?

I have to say I agree with Kaotic on this one. Feline you're obviously a smart guy and have potential to be super valuable to the forum. But when every thread you start is a complaint thread and we know you from doing the same thing at the other forums, then somebody or many of us are going to ride you for it. The thing is Akai doesn't respond or check this forum for sh*t. We are here to help each other out and such. You can kick knowledge without being negative 90% of the time. So thanks for your input to Akai. If you want to post up your whole list of complaints ONCE and have us sign your petition to Akai to fix them, then post them up and I will sign it. But every time you post up each and every single flipping item on this board and complain to the users about each little dramatic issue, it just dilutes the usefulness of the board and makes you look like a toy. The more helpful this site is to Joe Q MPC the more people will join up and help out. If it's all complaints and MV800 comparisons then more newjacks will come in here and think that it's the correct spot to compare and complain . It's a snowball effect either way. So say what you gotta say but just keep that in mind. peace.

it was only a matter of time before feline1 showed up here. He sinle handedly killed the dpsworld mpc4000 forum. Ther is no one over there for him to antagonize anymore so he finally gave in and joined this group.

to his credit, he can be helpfull, even still being childish.
I am sure he will get banned for running his mouth. It is just a matter of when.

I think he is gay(not that that matters, but should explain alot)

It does seem more, and more that this forum is turning into another future producers(whack). Too many no talent kids out for fame. Time bandits, new to the game.

I'm amazed to hear that I managed to "single-handedly destroy" (MWOAH HAH HAH HAH) the DPSWerld EZboard, since I've been banned from there for over a year and thus unable to even READ it, never mind post there.
Perhaps it actually died because it was so dull without me

(Anyways, from what I remember, the I'd quite stand by my part in the two minor furores that took place:

- (i) one of the OS updates, I forget what it was, sthg like 1.33 or 1.40 or sthg, inctroduced a killer bug, where the MPC4000 wouldn't save changes to multis and programs (you'd go through the whole routing where you save it, the wee lady on the screen would ask you "File Exists! Are you sure you wanna over-write??" and you'd say "YES! DO IT!!!!" but although the progress bar would scroll along, if you loaded the files back up the next session, it wouldn't have saved your changes and you'd lost your work!
Obviously this was a hellishly egregious bug to appear in a flagship professional-market machine.
I reported the bug (perfectly civilly) through the correct channels, and was told more than once that "they couldn't reproduce it".
This denial continued until the released OS update that fixed it!!
BUT (tellingly) the was no ReadMe issued to explain what bugs the OS update fixed. ***COVER UP!!!***
SeanW on that board didn't like it when I pressed for some satisfaction on that point.

(ii) the FX board return level debacle - everyone complained for about 2 years that the FX "sucked" (were too quiet, and distorted).
I looked into the problem (clearly more deeply than Akai had ever done) and pointed out that the max FX return level was -12dB below the the main outputs.... reported this to Akai.
SeanW told us Akai were "investigating" it, but repeatedly refused to give any more info on that board....
....finally OS 1.60 came out which fixed the problem (-12dB and all), which I feel somewhat vindicates the gripes so many people had about the FX.

.....anyways, yes, I freely admit, sarcastis Northern Irish b@stard that I am, when a major corporation treats me, who's spent thousands of pounds on their products, like schit, then yes, I will be as asinine and gleefully rude and childish towards them as I can muster :-)
If they'd been polite, helpful and apologetic in the first place, none of this would've happened. But instead they were obtuse, uncommunicative and downright mendacious........ and so I feel raise my handbag and swipe back twice as good as I get.
SORRY THERE

As for this board,
I dunno what some of these people get off COMPLAINING about "complaint" threads?!?
We're not "complaining", we're just reporting technical issues with the machine, and discussing them with out peers and fellow users,
so that we can get a broader handle on the problem and be more accurate and focussed when we speak to the official channels at Akai about it.
If this board isn't the place for doing that, then christ knows where is?!?
If reading suggestions that the product you spent your money on might not be 101% perfect makes you wet your pants in fear, then, hey, DON'T READ MY THREADS!
Just stick to reading the dumb-@ss threads about phat beets so you can pinch and plagarise other people's productions ideas to use in your own derivative tracks /yawns/
I must say threads like that BORE ME TO TEARS, but do I try and wreck the board by filling it up with TROLL THREADS about how I don't like your chit-chat about phat-beets?!? NO! I just don't read them and let you get on with it in peace.
You would do well to do the same.

Great suggestions let`s make a complaint bible and place all the tear jerkers in there and get on with what the mpc tutor had in mind giving solutions to the problems. :D

kaotikmuzikproductions wrote:I'm not going to name names, but i'm starting see the same few 4000 users constantly complain about how the 4000 isnt living up to their expectations, and that so and so machine is better. If that is the case then sell you're 4000,and go buy the better machine! I left one board because of one user complained so much there werent any helpful posts anymore. Now I see that he is posting here doing the same thing. When will the complainers realize that the people that work at Akai are humans, and that humans are prone to make mistakes, and that no one machine is perfect. You guys want the magic machine that will do it all,and im sorry that the 4000 isnt that machine. Some of use users are satisfied with the 4000,and we have genuine issues that we need help with. If the Mpc 60,2000,or Roland MV 8000 is a better machine then get it,and post on that machines forum, and complain about what you wish it had there, and let the real 4000 users on this forum help each other out with real issues!

hehe.. I dont think mistakes can be made with such an expensive machine! Word.
Making mistakes is for losers!

Thanks, I was hoping to get some Studio time today, but looks like the Wife
overruled and she's heading to the Dog Show and I'll be watching our Son.
Hoping maybe to get sometime in tomorrow morning at 5am so I can
get a good 2-3 hours before work starts. I'll give it a shot then and see
how it works.

In the meantime, in another thread, I provided the steps that I use
to get FX so it has their tail. Can you look and see if those are the same
steps that you are using?

Guess we should probably take the rest of this discussion to that thread.

If I don't sleep in, I'll post up tomorrow, if I reproduced the issue with
your files and if possible what steps I did to resolve the issue.

I too, don't think people should complain about a product on a website geared to helping its users. The 4000 is extremely different than all of the other MPC's and because of that, it turns people away - even the ones who've bought one. I know very few people who have actually read the 2000 or the 2000XL's manuals. Most people don't because, they don't have to. There are so many people using them that all you have to do is ask someone a few questions and you're off.

There are certain types of people that the 4000 was conceived in thought of. If you realize that you aren't one of these people, don't feel bad, maybe you did step ahead of yourself.
