Is Flash ROM worth it?

...just tryin' to find the most efficient way to save my stuff...the only thing i got is the MP...no computer, just the MP...Zip disk crashed on me twice...i guess it's back to the floppy...

Depends on what you use it for. It is not really meant for backup storage. Keep in mind that this thing is only 8MB which wont get you very far. A lot of drum kits take up more space than that alone. The flash ROM is more of an expansion to your RAM and is usefull for people that want sounds automatically loaded up when the MPC turns on (great for if you do live stuff and want some insurance).

You definately need a real storage option even if you were to get this. Zips do suck, as they WILL break over time. I'm thinking I'll go the memory card route down the road, but still a lot of confusion on that subject right now. Other than zip and memory card, I would only recomend an external hard drive which you can get for about 100 bones on ebay.

Are these things even around? I don't know a single other person that has one, and when I got mine off ebay I didn't see it being sold anywhere except for some small shops with insane prices ($400+)

no its not worth it. get a harddrive or a scsi zip drive off ebay. the zips are the best way to go imo. they are bout $30

thanks for the info...i gotta build up some serious confidence for Zip's again...i got both internal and external and my Zip's still click...i'm not sure how a perfectly used zip crashed like that...i had over 900MB of stuff on there...so i'm tryin' to find the most efficient way...i guess it's back to the floppy's for now...

well for $30 u can replace it. I just had to do that for my esi2000. so if u dont mind droppin that loot once in a blue moon its straight.

...i got three zip drives...2 internal, 1 external...they all were workin' fine until i attempted to save my work and click-click...i put in another one...the same thing ...kinda interesting...i switched drives and check all that...same thing...again...interesting...

Get a SCSI hard drive. I love mine.

Not really. Zips have the worst reputation for build quality and have a very high failure rate (likely the worst in the industry). Flash drives are the best way to go. I've been using them for years in all the Akai Pro equipment. No moving parts. No failures.

I've bought most all of my readers for $5 or $10, cheaper than many of the zips. Also, the cost per meg for a flash drive is less than Zips. You can get 1 gig drives for $60 new and the last time I looked at 10 pack of 100meg zips was $99.

man...good info!...for real!...wish i would've heard this a year ago...so where can i get a 1 gig flash drive for 60 $...do i install it internally...and when you say readers do you mean disk...how do i save...thanks again for the info...

This is the exact reason I'm in the process of switching to a card reader. I've had several Zips crash on me and lost a lot of music.

...well, i'm glad i'm not the only one here...man...so again, where do i get this card reader...and what is it...break it down for me...

I got mine off ebay. They run anywhere from $10 to $60. Search for PCD-47B on ebay and this forum for more info.

flash is pretty cool, but i have an internal zip that has done me straight for bout a year. Flash is def the way to go, but im not to familair with the install and settin it up, i try not to suggest things that i dont have experince with.
