you sample breaks off of records. Then use them in your beats.
example, i can sample a "drum break". Say the drum solo is two bars long.......i can either chop it up, and use the individual drum hits to make my own pattern. Or i can loop the sample and play it how it is and loop it over and over.
Then you lay your own melodies over the drums. Or you can sample "instrument breaks" and chop those up, and create your own melodies with them.
The idea of the break and sampling, is finding sounds that are soloed, so you can use them. Sometimes if you have too many instruments going at once, you cant really use them because they are too difficutl to chop and rearrange or lay over you own instruments (comming from a keyboard) or sometimes you wanna layer several samples together............Its hard to use drums and instrumetns at once too......because when you sample you want to add your own drums, or not just copp someone elses melody. Solo instruments are crucial and are the point of a break. You want to sample the unique quality of the break..............but also want to be able to manipulate it, and chop it, use it in your own way.......create something new and original out of it.
the skull snaps break for example has been used in a shit load of songs.

check it out. There are gazzilions of drum breaks that have been used in hiphop songs. and the same drum breaks used in multiple songs. There are also instrument solos that have been used in the same sense-used in multiple hiphop beats, but manipulted in such a way, that they become original and you cant even tell its the same sample.
the idea, is to flip the sample in your own way. Even if another producer has used the same sample you can still use the sample and flip it in a way you cant tell its the same make it yours and original........its a skill and an Art.
alot of people dont realize the significance of break beats. Its the root of hiphop. Sampling is rooted from Djs using break beats. Looping the breaks with the turntable, by beat juggling them. EG having the same record on two tables, then toggling the section of the break back and forth, cueing one record, switching to the next, etc. Repeating the same section. Then the MC would show his skills over the break.
Then samplers where invented, and you could just sample the break. hiphop artists manipulated the technology and developed what we consider "hiphop sampling" today.
There is alot more history to it than that, but thats the basic.
Listen to dj premier, RZA, Dr.Dre, any **** producer and they sample in one way or another..........and have used classic drum breaks.
a good example of a loop is eminems "my name is" thats just one big loop sampled from a record.
